The grass pitch

General

  • Peaceful site near the River Hamble: two pubs within walking distance
  • Six miles from Southampton and 12 from Portsmouth's ferry terminal
  • Set in scuba diving and open-water swimming lake grounds

Get set to get wet… with the Solent coast a couple of miles away, the Hamble river down the road and of course the lake on site, it’s safe to say that life pretty much revolves around the water at Andark Lake, a small and quiet grassy site six miles from the centre of Southampton.

The main focal point here is the purpose-built scuba diving training lake, where wetsuit-clad types can sign up for training courses and recreational dives, hire kit and fill air tanks. Open-water swims can be had for an extra charge at the weekends, when staff are on site and the place isn't in use by divers. Outside of swim time, there’s more water-based activity (sailing, paddleboarding, kitesurfing and windsurfing) along the riverside or at Swanwick Marina.

Should all this aquatic activity have worked up a bit of a hunger, trot over to the site café for snacks and light lunches, plus hot and cold drinks throughout the day. For your evening meals, three pubs are within walking distance, or you can pick up supermarket supplies two miles away for a sunset sausage sizzle.

Other amenities on site include a drinking water tap and a toilet block with male and female changing rooms, lockers and showers, all open 24/7. A coldwater sink is available in the pitching field where guests can wash pots and pans, and an accessible toilet is available on request.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Lake open-water swimming is not included in the rate and is charged at £5 per person for a day ticket (£15 for a family ticket). Swimming is only available at the weekends.

No swimming while divers are in the lake. The lake must not be used after hours or when no staff are on site, as it's a deep diving training lake and can be dangerous.

Dogs are not allowed in the lake at any time.

We arrived at the campsite and was greeted by very friendly staff who guided us to our pitches. We were told that since there was no-one beyond us we could park how we wanted so we were able to create an enclosed space with our vans all facing eachother. The on-site facilities were very good, and it was very convenient to have on-site waste disposal so we didn't have to keep that with us. We explored the surrounding area and followed one of the walks which was really enjoyable and right off the camp-site.

We arrived late so it was difficult to find our pitch in the dark but we managed.
A basic sight not really intended for just camping holidays as based around a sports lake but when we did meet staff they were helpful and friendly.
The toilets and showers were good, clean and well thought out. When the weather is better we can see this is a pretty site with nice garden areas to sit out and a sauna in a super cute gypsy caravan style unit (as an extra, not included in the price)
A bit pricey compared to more formal sites with more amenities.
Lovely area though, nice walks and the marina not far where you can eat at the Marina cafe which was super.

    Disliked:

The mud, but not the sites fault as it had been raining for days. Bit more outside lighting might help.

From the manager...

Thank you for your nice review, it is good to get to us in daylight and at end of October is before 16.00 , the reception is not open on a Monday or Tuesday in winter months just cleaning done daily. As you say not mcuh we could do with continuous rain your week. Glad you enjoyed 'The Boat House Cafe' on our recommendation list.

From the manager...

Hi Hannah,
Glad you enjoyed our small site and under floor heating in building is good at this time of year. Apologies someone went on your pitch while you were out, hopefully one next door was OK. The arriving camper did not check in and went on the wrong pitch, locked van and went out before we had noticed. Hopefully see you again.
