The lake

General

  • Peaceful site near the River Hamble: two pubs within walking distance
  • Six miles from Southampton and 12 from Portsmouth's ferry terminal
  • Set in scuba diving and open-water swimming lake grounds

Get set to get wet… with the Solent coast a couple of miles away, the Hamble river down the road and of course the lake on site, it’s safe to say that life pretty much revolves around the water at Andark Lake, a small and quiet grassy site six miles from the centre of Southampton.

The main focal point here is the purpose-built scuba diving training lake, where wetsuit-clad types can sign up for training courses and recreational dives, hire kit and fill air tanks. Open-water swims can be had for an extra charge at the weekends, when staff are on site and the place isn't in use by divers. Outside of swim time, there’s more water-based activity (sailing, paddleboarding, kitesurfing and windsurfing) along the riverside or at Swanwick Marina.

Should all this aquatic activity have worked up a bit of a hunger, trot over to the site café for snacks and light lunches, plus hot and cold drinks throughout the day. For your evening meals, three pubs are within walking distance, or you can pick up supermarket supplies two miles away for a sunset sausage sizzle.

Other amenities on site include a drinking water tap and a toilet block with male and female changing rooms, lockers and showers, all open 24/7. A coldwater sink is available in the pitching field where guests can wash pots and pans, and an accessible toilet is available on request.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Lake open-water swimming is not included in the rate and is charged at £5 per person for a day ticket (£15 for a family ticket). Swimming is only available at the weekends.

No swimming while divers are in the lake. The lake must not be used after hours or when no staff are on site, as it's a deep diving training lake and can be dangerous.

Dogs are not allowed in the lake at any time.

Very friendly staff, very pleasant stay, quiet site overlooking small lake.
    Toilet/showers very clean.
As a person of a certain age I found the lack of a seat in the shower cubicle to be awkward.
Didn't bother with wifi so can't comment, likewise with activities.

electric hook up was an extension lead. Toilet block locked during the day. Not like the pictures.

From the manager...

Toilet block is open for campers in day, just needed to ask reception or staff member to open ( this was explained in welcome letter & email, unfortunately not many campers read ), to maintain social distancing in changing facilities we cannot allow more than 2-3 persons in at once (or family group).
With a lot of swimmers & divers on site, the easiest way is to open for specific camper groups, otherwise would be 15 swimmers changing in with you. we can't have someone on door counting numbers in or out.

All leads come from individually fused distribution boxes on each end of the building which you are welcome to run your own cables down to if prefer.
Not sure which photo incorrect, but customers posted photos give a good representation of the site.

Quiet site with excellent toilet and shower facilities. Plenty of hot water regular cleaning. A Toilet was always available even when the main shower and toilet blocks were being cleaned. Motorhome pitches were located close to facilities and well away from the main family camping area so no noise problems. Swimming lake was available for use of campers at an additional cost of £6.00 when not in use my trainee diverse.

terrific hospitality and very friendly, thanks to Michael, the manager, and Pete, for friendly advice! We have stayed here before, but it appears the plot nos have changed?..what used to be plot no 1, seems to be plot 3,..which was what i thought i had booked,..but never mind, we had lovely views across the Lake!

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike!,.. but, having booked what we thought was the original plot 1.., was now plot 3, (am sure it was plot 1, a few years ago)..it seems the numbers have changed,..anyway, we were on plot no 1, lovely view, but the grass area for the awning on our small campervan only just fitted the grass area! tent pegs had to be put in the hardstanding and also guide ropes up onto the bank. The plots nos 1 and no 3 are very close together, had we not arrived before plot 3 was occupied, then it would have been difficult to put out guide ropes for our awning which is only 300x300, being a small campervan we need the awning!..and the grass to pitch! Please Mike, could the grass area on plot 1 be extended for just even one metre into the very long hardstanding? Not all campervans are self sufficient,..and need free standing awnings on the grass. Incidently, another small campervan arrived on plot 3 and had a same size awning as us erected...but, unlike us, he had a lot more grass pitch area! it was then you could see how close we were and how small our "square" grass plot really was!..anyway, we will return, ..Vanessa said thank you for excellent bacon rolls, and to Pete for the lovely flowers!..Kind regards to you all. Phil and Vanessa

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely review, yes we might have moved plot numbers, we did have 1A at one point.
Comments noted on the grass, over the winter with help of everyone's photo we are going to landscape some of the plots better to take into account some if not all of the shapes of awnings and also get 2 Motorhome hard standing in bigger field .
I will pass your comments onto Mike & Pete
