Andark Lake: Swimming and diving on site

General

  • Peaceful site near the River Hamble: two pubs within walking distance
  • Six miles from Southampton and 12 from Portsmouth's ferry terminal
  • Set in scuba diving and open-water swimming lake grounds

Get set to get wet… with the Solent coast a couple of miles away, the Hamble river down the road and of course the lake on site, it’s safe to say that life pretty much revolves around the water at Andark Lake, a small and quiet grassy site six miles from the centre of Southampton.

The main focal point here is the purpose-built scuba diving training lake, where wetsuit-clad types can sign up for training courses and recreational dives, hire kit and fill air tanks. Open-water swims can be had for an extra charge at the weekends, when staff are on site and the place isn't in use by divers. Outside of swim time, there’s more water-based activity (sailing, paddleboarding, kitesurfing and windsurfing) along the riverside or at Swanwick Marina.

Should all this aquatic activity have worked up a bit of a hunger, trot over to the site café for snacks and light lunches, plus hot and cold drinks throughout the day. For your evening meals, three pubs are within walking distance, or you can pick up supermarket supplies two miles away for a sunset sausage sizzle.

Other amenities on site include a drinking water tap and a toilet block with male and female changing rooms, lockers and showers, all open 24/7. A coldwater sink is available in the pitching field where guests can wash pots and pans, and an accessible toilet is available on request.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Lake open-water swimming is not included in the rate and is charged at £7 per person for a day ticket . Swimming is only available Wednesday to Sunday.

No swimming while divers are in the lake. The lake must not be used after hours or when no staff are on site, as it's a deep diving training lake and can be dangerous.

Dogs are not allowed in the lake at any time.

Nice location for a weekend away. Nothing fancy. All the facilities as the description. It is predominantly a Suba Diving Centre, so the facilities are shared. The toilet/changing room floors are wet most of the time. Wifi signal was good as pitch was right behind the building. Staff available for information as there isn't much info regarding camping/emergencies. Cafe was open 0830-1630 at the weekends serving nice hot/cold food and drinks. Cafe got a bit busy on the Sunday morning but that was no issue as we were on a chillout weekend. The Old Ship pub served super food. The roast was really good value for what you got on the plate.
We will be back again in the future.

Everything!, we cannot fault the genuine, laid back hospitality, that Mike and the team provide. When camping, overlooking the Lake stirs tranquility!, if a chilled location is required, Andark has it!

    Disliked:

Too much, "new" added gravel/chipping, which has eroded the grass areas on pitch no 1 & 3. If one has a small campervan with a much needed awning that is needing pegging out, then some pegging has to be in the hard gravel,.not easy... Just another three feet of grass to meet the hard surface would make a difference.

Good buildings with good facilities, plenty of space. Smalls shop and cafe with lovely food and cakes. The training lake was fun to watch swimmers and divers, and I even had a go at paddle boarding. I liked being able to bring my dog to the site. There was a lovely walk along the Hamble not far away. It was a nice peaceful spot. Good wifi at the buildings (but didn't reach the pitch I had).

    Disliked:

Minor points: The drains in the changing rooms were a little smelly, may be because they aren't mains drains. They could level some more pitches on the sloping camping field although the one I had at the top was fine.

    Nothing

    Disliked:

Electric cables supplied by site did not reach vehicle , therefore although you pay for a hard standing gravel pitch ( which the site calls a plot) , you have to park on the grass to enable the cable to reach.
Raised the issue with a member of the site team , who advised me to join an additional cable to the existing one.
Rightly or wrongly, in my opinion, that is not safe, therefore we had to park on the grass.
Showers were cold , only one WC for men.
Any items left on floor in cubicle whilst showering get saturated ( wife’s slippers)

From the manager...

Like most camping sites, campers are expected to provide their own cables for electricity. You were also offered an additional cable by staff on site.
There are 2 toilets and a urinal available for men.
There are lockers and hooks to use whilst showering.
