Hill Farm Caravan Park: Just wish the weather was better

General

  • Family-run and dog-friendly park in a calm countryside setting
  • Peppa Pig World and Romsey town centre within 15 minutes’ drive
  • Playground, recreational fields, dog-walking area, café and tennis

Ham it up on a holiday at Hill Farm Caravan Park, a dog-friendly and family-run site a 15-minute drive from the popular Peppa Pig World at Paultons Park and less than 20 from the numerous walking trails of the New Forest.

A grand spot for keeping the kids entertained when they’re not off fawning over their favourite cartoon character, this site has a playground (for ages 11 and under) with a covered sandpit, a Wendy house and a tyre swing, as well as a recreational area where teens can hang out. A dog walk leading down to the site’s woods, where four-legged friends can frolic off-lead, is set just behind here.

If the sprogs (and dogs) in your life aren’t travelling with you, the park still makes a great base – it’s a top spot for touring the Test Valley (20 minutes’ drive) and Stonehenge (40 minutes) or visiting the cities of Southampton, Salisbury and Winchester (all within half an hour). Ferries set off from half an hour away if you’re off to France or the Isle of Wight.

Staying local? The park’s handily placed for horse riding, walking, golfing or fly and coarse fishing breaks. Come evening, it’s a peaceful place as the no-noise policy after 11pm boosts the chances of a good night’s snooze.

Head to the local pub, a 20-minute walk away, for supper and a pint just before bedding down; for breakfast and lunch, the on-site café serves up light bites and cakes in the week and does roasts on a Sunday. A shop on the grounds sells alcohol, groceries, newspapers and a small selection of caravan and camping essentials.

Lovely spotless showers, toilets, good facilities, well kept site. Lovely grass pitches and recreation area. Small cafe and shop.Play equipment area needed refurbishment.

    Disliked:

The site is mostly occupied by seasonal vans motorhomes, there for 8 months a year and constantly visited by families and visitors. They are on lovely pitches, hedged, roomy. As a 4day stay we were allocated a double pitch, a long gravel pitch with a seasonal van permanently parked behind you. It's a cramped area made worse by the seasonal van having family and friends to visit, dogs, children, bikes and having 2 cars constantly back and fore . No issue with that other than we were totally unable to sit outside our van as the grass is the access for all the family dogs and vehicles to get to their van behind us and was used to park both their cars there too.Not pleasant, not relaxing, zero privacy. Left a day early as very disappointed.

Me and my wife have never stayed here before so wasn’t sure what it would be like. Everything about the place was perfect. Toilets and showers were immaculate and clean. Showers were lovely and hot which is always a winner.

The pitch was perfect for what we needed.
The staff were all respectful and polite. The couple that checked us in were so kind and couldn’t have been any more helpful. Will definitely visit there again for a weekend camping

  • Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch (premium)
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

Easy access from good road to a near level serviced pitch. Good cafe, shop & post office & play park for under 11’s. Well groomed grounds, friendly, flexible & professional staff. Excellent toilet (& shower - didn’t use) blocks, clean & well maintained.
Very close to Romsey & Mottisfont amongst other areas

    Disliked:

Elson a bit shallow, careful not to splash!
Our pitch only had a view of the toilet block, not sure if other, prettier pitches would be fully serviced. Drain needed clearing of debris.
Didn’t gather any information about whether close to off road paths, didn’t seem to be any linked.
Good WiFi but £5 a night felt pricey

Local attractions

Once the kids have cuddled Peppa Pig at Paultons Park (20 minutes' drive), flock towards other animal-themed activities nearby such as Longdown Activity Farm (15 minutes) where families gather to watch the Friesian cows being milked, groom the ponies and feed the baby goats.

Kids can’t get enough of creatures? Marwell Zoo houses more than 200 rare species, from tigers and snow leopards to rhinos and hippos, and the Hawk Conservancy Trust cares for birds in its combined 22 acres of woodland and wildflower meadows. Both are around half an hour away.

If urban explores are on the agenda, Romsey (15 minutes) is the nearest market town for a wander round the shops, while the promise of a peek at one of Britain’s best cathedrals might be enough to lure you over to the city of Salisbury (25 minutes).
