  • Family-run and dog-friendly park in a calm countryside setting
  • Peppa Pig World and Romsey town centre within 15 minutes’ drive
  • Playground, recreational fields, dog-walking area, café and tennis
Ham it up on a holiday at Hill Farm Caravan Park, a dog-friendly and family-run site a 15-minute drive from the popular Peppa Pig World at Paultons Park and less than 20 from the numerous walking trails of the New Forest. A grand spot for keeping the kids entertained when they’re not off fawning over their favourite cartoon character, this site has a playground (for ages 11 and under) with a covered sandpit, a Wendy house and a tyre swing, as well as a recreational area where teens can hang out. A dog walk leading down to the site’s woods, where four-legged friends can frolic off-lead, is set just behind here. If the sprogs (and dogs) in your life aren’t travelling with you, the park still makes a great base – it’s a top spot for touring the Test Valley (20 minutes’ drive) and Stonehenge (40 minutes) or visiting the cities of Southampton, Salisbury and Winchester (all within half an hour). Ferries set off from half an hour away if you’re off to France or the Isle of Wight. Staying local? The park’s handily placed for horse riding, walking, golfing or fly and coarse fishing breaks. Come evening, it’s a peaceful place as the no-noise policy after 11pm boosts the chances of a good night’s snooze. Head to the local pub, a 20-minute walk away, for supper and a pint just before bedding down; for breakfast and lunch, the on-site café serves up light bites and cakes in the week and does roasts on a Sunday. A shop on the grounds sells alcohol, groceries, newspapers and a small selection of caravan and camping essentials.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site (premium)

Liked: I have never left a bad review for any site and I am the person who usually looks past them and thinks a holiday is what you make so please read before booking!! We arrived 40 minutes early and one of the wardens escorted us to our pitch with no early check in fees. My first impression was friendly & helpful. The electric point is shared between two vans and initially this was no issue until our neighbours returned and began using their van, which would trip ours out. The wardens were helpful to begin with, offering us an alternative hook up lead to try but ultimately blaming our van because it’s an older model. We have never had any issues before and in-fact took our van away 3 weeks prior with no problem. We did not want to pack down and move pitches to set up again and as such, had to spend the week with no hot water in order to have use of our lights and sockets etc - the electric point was not strong enough to support full use of two vans and we had to manually chose between which fuses we could and couldn’t do without for the week. From looking at other reviews it seems we are not the first to experience this problem. In addition to this, there is only one tap per post to accommodate two vans. Fortunately we had a multi adapter so that both us and our neighbours could have a constant supply of water. In the past we have stayed on sites that host permanent residents and it appeared on first glance that Hill Farm was no different, however we have never found residents to be a nuisance until now. It did come to light later on that this particular family had in fact outstayed their welcome and were ignoring requests to leave but none the less severely impacted our stay. Every night for three consecutive nights the teenage boy from this family would park a car in the empty pitch next to our van and run his engine for hours and hours into the night despite the site rules regarding noise after dark and our personal request for him to turn off his engine as we had a one year old trying to sleep. On one of the nights he even knocked our front windows at 11pm! This set off our dogs and almost woke our child. He wanted to know if we had a battery charger he could use because he’d ran his engine for so long! He then slammed his doors open and shut for about an hour or so. Those first 3 nights of lack of sleep due to noise were exhausting. We did mention this to the wardens who seemed shocked and acted as though they did not know who we were referring to but were also willing to help him jump start his car the next day! We were not the only family who had issues with this family - our neighbours one side also complained to the wardens about the late night noise and our other neighbours were too intimated to use the shower blocks because of their presence. On the fifth day we had no water due to an issue across the park. It went off just after 10am so we decided to head out and get some breakfast and go for a stroll. We were told before leaving it would be fixed asap but returned at 2pm to find nothing had been fixed. 29 degree heat and no drinking water for almost 6 hours. Overall we paid for a super pitch but between single access water points to be shared between two vans, electric points not strong enough to support two vans and the complete water outage there is absolutely nothing ‘super’ about the pitch! Aside from this, the showers & toilet block are clean and dog park is lovely. Usually we are a very laid back family and wake up and see what we feel like doing but on this trip we couldn’t get up, dressed and out fast enough. We didn’t spend a single day relaxing at our van and ate out far more than we usually would to avoid being on site as much as possible. This is the first time we have found the site to seriously impact our holiday and we decided to leave a day early. We certainly wouldn’t return.

Powered grass and gravel site

Liked: The pitch was level. Location of the site was good and quiet. There was a shop and cafe on site. The breakfast was good and good value for money. Toilet and shower blocks were clean and warm.

Disliked: The children’s play area was boarding on unsafe. Great to have a cafe with an outside eating area but it was very grubby, the seats which were not undercover were covered in bird excrement. Cafe it’s self was grubby. The toilet disposal area was not in service so we had to lift the drain cover to deposit the waste. The hose pipe to wash out the toilet cassette wasted water because of a poor fitting connection to the tap. Power leads running across the road/path because certain power points weren’t working.

Powered grass and gravel site

Liked: Nice quiet site, friendly helpful staff, clean facilities, shop with food items you may need, little cafe with adequate menu if required. Public Transport about a half hours walk. Certainly recommend.

Disliked: Some cars traveling at excessive speed kicking up clouds of dust on the gravel tracks.

Powered grass and gravel site

Liked: Large pitch with plenty of space, a well stocked shop and a cafe catering for all needs. Staff are friendly and very helpful. Toilets and showers very clean and maintained to a good standard. Good facilities for dogs with a well marked site walk and more locally.

Disliked: Noisy presumably drunken neibours arguing. This is no reflection on the staff as is was very late in the night. Paid for Wifi to a third party company had one bar at best even by the shop two or three bars as it kept dropping out had to use 4g. When paying for a service to aid your travel plans this fell short.

Local attractions

Once the kids have cuddled Peppa Pig at Paultons Park (20 minutes' drive), flock towards other animal-themed activities nearby such as Longdown Activity Farm (15 minutes) where families gather to watch the Friesian cows being milked, groom the ponies and feed the baby goats. Kids can’t get enough of creatures? Marwell Zoo houses more than 200 rare species, from tigers and snow leopards to rhinos and hippos, and the Hawk Conservancy Trust cares for birds in its combined 22 acres of woodland and wildflower meadows. Both are around half an hour away. If urban explores are on the agenda, Romsey (15 minutes) is the nearest market town for a wander round the shops, while the promise of a peek at one of Britain’s best cathedrals might be enough to lure you over to the city of Salisbury (25 minutes).
