General

  • Family-friendly site with pools, 5 minutes' drive from the New Forest
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of Peppa Pig World and Adventure Wonderland
  • A 20-minute car trip from Bournemouth beach

Dear, dear, dear… ever utter that, when planning family holidays? Trying to find somewhere with easy access to sea and countryside, wildlife and amusement parks, maybe a fishing lake and a pool back at base?

It’s more a case of deer, deer, deer at Shamba Holidays, a family-friendly site in Hampshire that’s five minutes’ drive from the New Forest and regularly visited by wild woodland animals of all kinds. The deer like it… and your lot will love it, with forest walks and bike rides, windsurfing, fossil hunting, boat trips and theme parks all within less than an hour’s drive.

You’ll be busy, but when you’re ready for downtime back at the site, Shamba Holidays does the job. Those with energy to burn can cavort in the indoor and outdoor pools, clamber about the playground or have a kickabout on the sports field. And no need for dogs to feel excluded either, for there’s another field for them to go leaping, snuffling and bounding about on.

Those who prefer a slower pace can sip drinks or munch snacks at the clubhouse, and they can dine there too, if firing up the barbecue sounds like too much toil.

When knocking up a picnic for the day’s roamings, it’s an easy amble to the on-site shop, which sells local produce plus bread, drinks, sweets and ice cream.

The whole site is well run. Strict adherence to the COVID rules by site management. Staff very friendly & helpful. Excellent facilities that are kept scrupulously clean. The free bacon bap & a cup of tea at the weekend was a treat. I cannot recommend this site highly enough.

I felt there were good and bad aspects to this site. They are very hot on COVID, they take your temperature when you first arrive and the toilets and showers were very clean. At weekends they give free bacon, sausage or egg rolls, and tea/coffee, which was a nice touch.

However, they were so hot on COVID, and yet they seemed to group everyone together when there were loads of empty pitches. Pitches are of adequate size, not too close to campers either side, but the row behind was very close to our row.

I was happy with the unisex toilets & showers, although my wife less so, to the point where she would prefer to try another site when we're next in the area.

Also it seemed unnecessarily officious. They keep the entrance gate closed, and you have to wait to be let in. I understand that they want to provide a secure environment for their customers but it's frustrating to sit and wait, albeit usually only 2 or 3 minutes, although it seems longer when you have a takeaway going cold on the back seat. Also, the ungated exit is only 5 metres to the right, and there is nothing to stop anyone who was up to no good going in that way. In fact a couple of times, whilst we were waiting, people with less patience just went in through the exit gate, rendering the whole system pointless.

The site was in a good location, close to the main road with easy access to Bournemouth, Poole etc.

Local attractions

You needn’t stray far from base for fresh air activities: it’s a minute’s walk to East Moors Fishing Lake for days in quiet contemplation of the waters, and there’s further fishing five minutes’ drive away at Moors Valley Country Park, along with miniature steam trains, adventure play trails and golf.

If it’s rides and slides you’re after, Adventure Wonderland is 10 minutes away, with rollercoasters and log flumes, safari jeeps and battle boats; for fans of a certain cheeky cartoon porker, Peppa Pig World has rides and an indoor playground (20 minutes).

Wanting watery antics? Also 20 minutes away, Splashdown Waterpark has all the required river rides and waterfalls, or if you prefer your waves at a distance, head into Poole (25 minutes) for harbour cruises and ferry rides to Brownsea island.

Beach lazing, windsurfing and fossil hunting are handily close by at Bournemouth (20 minutes) and along the Purbeck Heritage Coast around Studland (50 minutes). The surrounding Studland and Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve makes for fine hikes, especially when the landscape turns into vivid yellows and purples in summer.

Surrounded by the New Forest, Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst (20 minutes and half an hour) are popular hubs for bike hire and numerous cycling routes. There’s a six-mile family-friendly circuit close by around Burley (15 minutes), or for those with bigger ambitions and calf muscles, a 15-mile loop from Brockenhurst.

  • Adventure Wonderland (3.2 miles)
  • The Bournemouth Balloon (7.0 miles)
  • Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum (7.2 miles)
