The field

General

  • Family-friendly site with pools, five minutes' drive from New Forest
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of Peppa Pig World and Adventure Wonderland
  • A 20-minute car trip from Bournemouth beach

Dear, dear, dear… ever utter that, when planning family holidays? Trying to find somewhere with easy access to sea and countryside, wildlife and amusement parks, maybe a fishing lake and a pool back at base?

It’s more a case of deer, deer, deer at Shamba Holidays, a family-friendly site in Hampshire that’s five minutes’ drive from the New Forest and regularly visited by wild woodland animals of all kinds. The deer like it... your lot will love it, with forest walks and bike rides, windsurfing, fossil hunting, boat trips and theme parks all within less than an hour’s drive.

You’ll be busy, but when you’re ready for downtime back at the site, Shamba Holidays does the job. Those with energy to burn can cavort in the indoor and outdoor pools, clamber about the playground or have a kickabout on the sports field. And no need for dogs to feel excluded either, for there’s another field for them to go leaping, snuffling and bounding about on.

Those who prefer a slower pace can sip drinks or munch snacks at the clubhouse, and they can dine there too, if firing up the barbecue sounds like too much toil.

When knocking up a picnic for the day’s roamings, it’s an easy amble to the on-site shop, which sells local produce plus bread, drinks, sweets and ice cream.

Lovely family friendly campsite 06/08/2019

We visited during half term. Friendly and helpful staff, who welcomed us on arrival, guided us to our pitch and were avaliable to assist with any questions. The wash and toilet facilities were plenty and very clean and regular tended to. Having the radio pumped in is a genius idea! We particularly loved the family bathroom option, this helped our shower-phobic child to stay clean! Our child really enjoyed the swimming pool. It was also quiet overnight, other than the main road, but as we live in a city with passing traffic at night the sound didn’t bother us.
There is also optional wi-fi, which you can buy passes for. Lots to visit nearby with a child under 10. When you get back to site there is a playground for the kids and club house to relax in when you get back.

    Disliked:

Sharp turn to pull out back on to the main road. Not the sites fault - but when you reach the end of the country lane it’s off the roundabout. Be ready to pull out quickly when there’s a gap. This wouldn’t stop us from returning, we are looking to book again.

    Site was overall very good.
    Extremely helpful friendly staff.
The site is very clean and the warm toilet block was amazing, loved the music playing in there which was a bonus as I get toilet fright and struggle to go but the music made the experience easy!
The showers are very warm and powerful. Good pitch size.
    Friendly seasonal helpful campers.
Small shop but seemed well stocked.
Moors Valley country park was within cycle distance and was great for a day out.
Close to Bournemouth beach and paultons park.

    Disliked:

Our only disappointment was the lack of children's entertainment.
The playpark is very very small, my child is quite shy so won't go off alone to play and doesn't make friends easily so we had to sit in the playpark with him but there's not much there and we all got bored easily.
The games room was heaving we walked in and walked back out again as its tiny and full of children who were playing which is obviously absolutely fine and what it's there for but the kids in there didn't offer up any of the equipment/ machines for our child to play with.
After realising we couldn't play in the games room, we decided to go swimming, it was a sweltering hot day and our tent was like a sauna even at 6pm so we headed over to the pool, again we wasn't prepared for how small it was and it was full, no where to base ourselves with our stuff and the pool had lack of space to have a comfortable swim/ play, we all looked at each other, thought nope, and walked back out again.
I was really surprised that there was no evening entertainment in the bar either, as I thought it was advertised as a clubhouse so assumed there would be daily evening entertainment with it being half term, once we realised there wasn't anything, we didn't go in the bar as we cooked food ourselves at our tent and bought alcohol with us
I guess we didn't prepare enough for no entertainment, we didn't bring any board games or tv/ consoles, so come evenings we sat in our cold tent playing hours of Uno to keep our son occupied who was bored alot... .
We made do and kept ourselves busy during the day by going to Paultons park, Bournemouth beach and Moors valley country park so it was only evenings we struggled and for this reason, we won't be returning to this site.

Great to have a bar and restaurant on site for a bit of rehydration !

Despite the site being very nice the entrance lane is a bit misleading.

Liked the location, very friendly staff and great amenities - club house, pool, shop. The shower layout was good with seating and hooks.

    Disliked:

Felt quite cramped with a lot of other motorhomes nearby, especially given it was in off season. This would put me off going in high season.

The shower itself wasn't very powerful and didn't give a lot of coverage.

Local attractions

You needn’t stray far from base for fresh air activities: it’s a minute’s walk to East Moors Fishing Lake for days in quiet contemplation of the waters, and there’s further fishing five minutes’ drive away at Moors Valley Country Park, along with miniature steam trains, adventure play trails and golf.

If it’s rides and slides you’re after, Adventure Wonderland is 10 minutes away, with rollercoasters and log flumes, safari jeeps and battle boats, and for fans of a certain cheeky cartoon porker, Peppa Pig World has rides and an indoor playground (20 minutes).

Wanting watery antics? Also 20 minutes away, Splashdown Waterpark has all the required river rides and waterfalls, or if you prefer your waves at a distance, head into Poole (25 minutes) for harbour cruises and ferry rides to Brownsea island.

Beach lazing, windsurfing and fossil hunting are handily close by at Bournemouth (20 minutes) and along the Purbeck Heritage Coast around Studland (50 minutes). The surrounding Studland and Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve makes for fine hikes, especially when the landscape turns into vivid yellows and purples in summer.

Surrounded by the New Forest, Lyndhurst and Brockhurst (20 minutes and half an hour) are popular hubs for bike hire and numerous cycling routes. There’s a six-mile family-friendly circuit close by around Burley (15 minutes), or for those with bigger ambitions and calf muscles, a 15-mile loop from Brockhurst.

Must see

  • Adventure Wonderland (5.2 kilometres)
  • The Bournemouth Balloon (11.2 kilometres)
  • Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum (11.5 kilometres)

  • Kingston Lacy (12.5 kilometres)
