General

  • Family-owned park on the banks of the River Wyre
  • Carefully landscaped wildlife haven with over 5000 trees
  • Four well-stocked and well-maintained fishing ponds

You know us, we’re a sucker for a place with a bit of family heritage, and if you’re the same, have a look at Claylands Caravan Park.

The Robinsons have owned Claylands for more than 50 years, when it was a simple 14-acre farm. Since then, it’s been transformed into a perfectly- landscaped holiday park, while keeping an edge of wilderness that campers and caravanners love.

Sitting on the meandering banks of the River Wyre, surrounded by more than 5000 indigenous trees, one thing you’re sure to wind up doing is looking out for the area’s more permanent residents, from squirrels to foxes, deer to rabbits, and twitchers - keep a beady eye open for the 85 different species overhead too.

Aside from the carefully pruned hedges, shrubs and trees on site, you’ll find all manner of amenities sprouting up to make your stay all the more fruitful. Planted close to the pitches is a free and modern loo and shower block, a well-equipped laundry room with two washers and two dryers (coin-operated), and washing-up facilities to have your crockery shining, all of which are open 24 hours and kept spotless. The grass gets greener still - drinking water taps and waste water disposal points are placed around the park for your convenience too.

Avid anglers will be hooked at Claylands as they cast a line into the park’s four well-stocked and very well-maintained fishing ponds. Abundant with roach, carp and tench, the scale of catches to be had here is any-fin but ordinary...brill-iant in fact. Too many fish puns? Gillty.

Really though, the site’s efforts to maintain these ponds is very impressive and each will provide hours of enjoyment and relaxation. A charge of £6 per person per day is in place to fish at Claylands and remember to bring your own licence from the post office, as well as all your own equipment.

Other facilities on site include a handy shop for the essentials, a kids' adventure playground to make grownups green with envy, and an indoor pool table.

Light snacks and home-cooked meals can be wolfed down at Stepping Stones Riverside Bar and Restaurant, just adjacent to the park (open Tuesday-Sunday all year round), which has a takeaway service, pretty views from inside the restaurant and a spacious green garden for dining outside.

Friendly staff. Lovely hot clean showers and toilets. (Music playing is a nice touch). Good sized pitches. Smashing food in the pub on site, the pub is nice and friendly, helpful staff. Good selection of food and a specials menu. Home cooked too. Nice area with plenty to see within a short distance. Easy to get to off the main roads. But of a park if you have kids and plenty of grass for them to play on. Highly recommended and we will be coming back.

    Disliked:

Nothing disliked. It is worth noting the site is near a major rail line but the slight noise didn't bother us. We like it. Also massive pylons nearby but again, not an issue for us.

Everything! After one week travelling (to support my wife and son as they ride a tandem from John O'Groats to Lands End for charity) and staying on a number of campsites, most of which were adequate for our needs (but no more), it is hard to express in words how it felt to arrive at Claylands to find such excellent facilities.

Hi Tim,
Many thanks for your lovely review, it was a pleasure to have you stay with us on the 'big journey'
I trust your wife and son have recovered and that their bike ride was a success and raised plenty of money.

We hope you will call and stay again if you are passing.

Regards to you all

Helen

Directions

Leave the M6 at junction 32 and head north towards Garstang or leave the M6 at junction 33 and head south for Garstang. We are just off the A6 on the banks of the River Wyre overlooking the Forest of Bowland, 1 mile north of Garstang and 8 miles south of Lancaster. The entrance is well signposted 1000 yards south of Quattro's Restaurant.

Alternatively, leave junction 2 of the M6 and head north for approximately 8 miles. Claylands Park has a brown marker 250 yards from the entrance to the park.

Local attractions

You’ll find postcard-worthy surroundings all about Claylands. Water urchins, hug the winding banks of the River Wyre (so winding in fact, this is how the river got its name) as you take a stroll on the river’s footpaths.

Lancaster Canal is also nearby for you to take a lazy amble along - there are plenty of public houses to rest your feet and quench your thirst enroute, which is what we like to hear.

The good news is that the river really is right on the doorstep at Claylands, so all you have to decide is which way you want to go. If you’re really stuck, the staff on site will be more than happy to point you in the right direction, literally. The reception is full of information leaflets and people ready to share their local knowledge to help you make the most of your stay.

Trip, trap over the footbridge from the campsite and you’ll arrive at Scorton village, home to its own Bikes and Barrows Festival over the May bank holiday weekend - which we think sounds wheely, wheely fun... This quirky annual shindig offers things to do for families, runners, walkers, cyclists, foodies and more.

Don’t worry if you’re not visiting in May, as this rural village is just eight miles south of Lancaster and 13 miles north of Preston, so close enough to bigger towns for those who want to succumb to a bit of retail therapy, but nicely planted in the Forest of Bowland for nature and history lovers too - Scorton’s Catholic church dates back to the seventeenth century so there are plenty of tales about the area to be discovered.

You should sample the refreshments at the The Priory and The Barn after climbing Nicky Nook nearby too, or pop in for a pint or pie (or both) after a hard day’s fishing at Wyreside Lake and Cleveley Mere.

It’s easy to see how this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Whether you’re walking, hiking, cycling, fishing or horse riding, the scenery is worth a snapshot.

Whitewashed cottages, higgledy-piggledy streets, country drinkeries (make sure you take a trip to the market town of Garstang if you want to tick all these off your list in one rather enjoyable hit - just a five-minute drive from Claylands)… you may feel like you’re in a Jane Austen novel, but the amenities, accessibility and attractions in the area are anything but throwback.

Alongside the pristine greenery and cobbled-street villages, you can still easily jump on the M6 to get further afield.

The shining lights of Blackpool beckon from Claylands, just a half-hour car journey away, and there’s more to Blackpool than the Pleasure Beach... If the thought of rollercoasters and candyfloss are enough to make your stomach flip, plenty of other family-friendly attractions are in abundance: Blackpool Tower Eye and Dungeon, Blackpool Zoo, the theatre, pier, shopping, dining, not to mention the beach itself, will keep everyone’s boredom at bay.

If you want to opt for a quieter kind of seaside, Cleveleys, Fleetwood and Morecambe are all options just a short drive from Claylands.

And if you prefer the way-up-highs to the waves, pull on your boots and hotstep to the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales, both of which you can get to in less than 40 minutes.
