General

  • Family-owned park on the banks of the River Wyre
  • Carefully landscaped wildlife haven with over 5000 trees
  • Four well-stocked and well-maintained fishing ponds

You know us, we’re a sucker for a place with a bit of family heritage, and if you’re the same, have a look at Claylands Caravan Park.

The Robinsons have owned Claylands for more than 50 years, when it was a simple 14-acre farm. Since then, it’s been transformed into a perfectly- landscaped holiday park, while keeping an edge of wilderness that campers and caravanners love.

Sitting on the meandering banks of the River Wyre, surrounded by more than 5000 indigenous trees, one thing you’re sure to wind up doing is looking out for the area’s more permanent residents, from squirrels to foxes, deer to rabbits, and twitchers - keep a beady eye open for the 85 different species overhead too.

Aside from the carefully pruned hedges, shrubs and trees on site, you’ll find all manner of amenities sprouting up to make your stay all the more fruitful. Planted close to the pitches is a free and modern loo and shower block, a well-equipped laundry room with two washers and two dryers (coin-operated), and washing-up facilities to have your crockery shining, all of which are open 24 hours and kept spotless. The grass gets greener still - drinking water taps and waste water disposal points are placed around the park for your convenience too.

Avid anglers will be hooked at Claylands as they cast a line into the park’s four well-stocked and very well-maintained fishing ponds. Abundant with roach, carp and tench, the scale of catches to be had here is any-fin but ordinary...brill-iant in fact. Too many fish puns? Gillty.

Really though, the site’s efforts to maintain these ponds is very impressive and each will provide hours of enjoyment and relaxation. A charge of £6 per person per day is in place to fish at Claylands and remember to bring your own licence from the post office, as well as all your own equipment.

Other facilities on site include a handy shop for the essentials, a kids' adventure playground to make grownups green with envy, and an indoor pool table.

Light snacks and home-cooked meals can be wolfed down at Stepping Stones Riverside Bar and Restaurant, just adjacent to the park (open Tuesday-Sunday all year round), which has a takeaway service, pretty views from inside the restaurant and a spacious green garden for dining outside.

the look of the place on pitch up

    Disliked:

unfortunately notified day before trip that the site was inhabitable due to floods? Very difficult to book an alternative in the timeframe ended up in North Cumbria at extra cost.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to give us some feedback, unfortunately on this occasion due to the onset of some extremely heavy rain our tent area became very waterlogged and would not have been suitable to pitch a tent on. We did of course notify you as soon as it was possible that the pitch would be unavailable, sadly this was very late due to the quick onset of the unexpected heavy rain and we can only apologise once again.
We do hope that you will book with us again, and would love to see you in the future.

The whole site, very clean and well laid out. A good play area for the kids and staff very friendly and helpful. The way we were allocated a different pitch due to the bad weather and water on the tent pitches. The stepping stones bar and restaurant was also excellent with food, staff and price.

    Disliked:

Being close to the pile on, but this was due to the bad weather and not being able to use the tent pitches as they where very wet. The on site shop was very limited in what it had to sell.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback, we always try to ensure you enjoy your stay even if the weather is not the best. On this occasion we only had limited availability of alternate pitches to offer you, despite the location being different from what you reqested we are happy you enjoyed your stay.
Our shop only stocks the basics due to us being within 2 miles of Aldi, Booths, Sainsburys and Co Op. If you feel there are items we really do need to stock, please do let us know and we can see if we can accommodate this for you.
We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Absolutely love Claylands Caravan Park. This was our second visit. First time was as a happy camper, our recent visit was in a touring caravan. The bar/ restaurant on site is picturesque with the stream running past. The kids loved going down with their wellies and crossing over to see the cows or going to the swing park. The facilities are immaculate.

    Disliked:

The on-site shop is pretty rubbish. If it was open, it stocked nothing :( but there is a Sainsbury’s about a 5 minute drive away or a garage in the opposite direction.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely feedback, we are very happy to have had you back for a second visit and that your stay was enjoyable.
The shop does only have basic contents & food because we have a Co Op, Sainsbury,s, Aldi and Booths all within a 2 mile radius. If there is something that you feel we do need to make sure we have in stock then please do let us know.
We do hope to see you again very soon.

Great location with easy access to the local area.

    Disliked:

Limited facilities, i would of expected a better shop and the website says they do breakfast on a Sunday but this isn't the case?

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback, we have only recently stopped doing breakfast, so please do advise me of where on the website you have seen this advertisement as it is an oversight on our behalf and we do apologise for this misleading information. The shop does only have basic contents & food but if there is something that you feel we do need make sure we have in stock then please do let us know. We do hope to see you again very soon.

Electric and water point at the pitch. The Stepping Stones restaurant and bar, good selection and quality of food and friendly staff.

    Disliked:

There is only one toilet and shower block at the entrance to the site, could do with another one nearer to where the camper and caravan site are as it is a fair walk when it's raining. No free Wi-Fi except in restaurant.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review us, we have recently upgraded the Wi-fi on the park and we do now charge for the access this can be purchased at reception. We do hope this has not put you off from returning.

Directions

Leave the M6 at junction 32 and head north towards Garstang or leave the M6 at junction 33 and head south for Garstang. We are just off the A6 on the banks of the River Wyre overlooking the Forest of Bowland, 1 mile north of Garstang and 8 miles south of Lancaster. The entrance is well signposted 1000 yards south of Quattro's Restaurant.

Alternatively, leave junction 2 of the M6 and head north for approximately 8 miles. Claylands Park has a brown marker 250 yards from the entrance to the park.

Local attractions

You’ll find postcard-worthy surroundings all about Claylands. Water urchins, hug the winding banks of the River Wyre (so winding in fact, this is how the river got its name) as you take a stroll on the river’s footpaths.

Lancaster Canal is also nearby for you to take a lazy amble along - there are plenty of public houses to rest your feet and quench your thirst enroute, which is what we like to hear.

The good news is that the river really is right on the doorstep at Claylands, so all you have to decide is which way you want to go. If you’re really stuck, the staff on site will be more than happy to point you in the right direction, literally. The reception is full of information leaflets and people ready to share their local knowledge to help you make the most of your stay.

Trip, trap over the footbridge from the campsite and you’ll arrive at Scorton village, home to its own Bikes and Barrows Festival over the May bank holiday weekend - which we think sounds wheely, wheely fun... This quirky annual shindig offers things to do for families, runners, walkers, cyclists, foodies and more.

Don’t worry if you’re not visiting in May, as this rural village is just eight miles south of Lancaster and 13 miles north of Preston, so close enough to bigger towns for those who want to succumb to a bit of retail therapy, but nicely planted in the Forest of Bowland for nature and history lovers too - Scorton’s Catholic church dates back to the seventeenth century so there are plenty of tales about the area to be discovered.

You should sample the refreshments at the The Priory and The Barn after climbing Nicky Nook nearby too, or pop in for a pint or pie (or both) after a hard day’s fishing at Wyreside Lake and Cleveley Mere.

It’s easy to see how this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Whether you’re walking, hiking, cycling, fishing or horse riding, the scenery is worth a snapshot.

Whitewashed cottages, higgledy-piggledy streets, country drinkeries (make sure you take a trip to the market town of Garstang if you want to tick all these off your list in one rather enjoyable hit - just a five-minute drive from Claylands)… you may feel like you’re in a Jane Austen novel, but the amenities, accessibility and attractions in the area are anything but throwback.

Alongside the pristine greenery and cobbled-street villages, you can still easily jump on the M6 to get further afield.

The shining lights of Blackpool beckon from Claylands, just a half-hour car journey away, and there’s more to Blackpool than the Pleasure Beach... If the thought of rollercoasters and candyfloss are enough to make your stomach flip, plenty of other family-friendly attractions are in abundance: Blackpool Tower Eye and Dungeon, Blackpool Zoo, the theatre, pier, shopping, dining, not to mention the beach itself, will keep everyone’s boredom at bay.

If you want to opt for a quieter kind of seaside, Cleveleys, Fleetwood and Morecambe are all options just a short drive from Claylands.

And if you prefer the way-up-highs to the waves, pull on your boots and hotstep to the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales, both of which you can get to in less than 40 minutes.
