Bowland Wild Boar Park: The wild boar animal park

General

  • Site in a wildlife centre in the Forest of Bowland’s Ribble valley
  • Just under 10 minutes’ drive from Chipping and 40 from Preston
  • Petting zoo, play area, café and pond; marked walking trails on site

For a family escape with an educational twist consider a stay at Bowland Wild Boar Park, a site set in the middle of a wildlife centre that aims to get kids up to speed on conservation and animal welfare. This place is topnotch for groups with younger members keen on cuddling creatures like lambs and baby chicks, or seeing more exotic breeds such as white wallabies, emus and water buffaloes.

Other activities with a farmyard focus available at this spot in the Forest of Bowland Area of Natural Beauty include tractor and trailer rides (in the school holidays and on weekends) as well as wildlife walks inside the lush green Ribble valley with fells and woodland all around. Named paths aimed at kids and adults alike range from the Cartoon and Totem Pole trails to the Bluebell Walk. A play area is also on site.

If you’d rather sit and watch the wildlife, a café is opposite the pond at the park where birds fly in to take titbits from the feeder; for other ways to spy winged critters in their natural habitat, you could also wander beside the nearby Hodder river.

After lunch at the café, spark up the barbecue for dinner – local produce is plentiful at the nearby farm shop. Another café plus a couple of pubs are in Chipping just over five minutes’ drive away if you’d prefer to spend less time cooking and more time spreading out next to the firepit back on base after a meal made by someone else.

Bowland Wild Boar Park has shower and toilet blocks and dishwashing stations with hot water.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Please note that the animal park within Bowland Wild Boar Park is only open at the weekends and during school holidays from February half term through to October half term. Stays can be booked outside of these times but please be aware that the animal park will not be open. Please also note that tickets for the animal park must be booked separately.

The grass in the camping field was really long so you got soaked walking to and from the tent / bathroom. The advertised play area is only accessible if you pay to go into the wild boar section. Also the price of this is free for under 2's then straight to adult prices. Surely a child's price would be a good idea for under 5's?
I'd recommend for nice weather camping.

From the manager...

thankyou Trevor for your review. Whilst we appreciate the grass in the tent field is quite long - unfortunately we have been unable to cut it for a couple of weeks due to the amount of rainfall - its too wet.
Overnight guests (both camping pod & tent guests) do have to purchase tickets to enter the animal park. These are just £8 each (a family ticket is discounted) and this entitles the guests to entry each day of their stay - so its really good value.
The 'play area' referenced above s within the animal park however there is another FREE smaller play park nearby to the tent field - next to the camping pods and guests are welcome to use this at anytime during their stay at no cost.

The fire pit style allowed us to cook dinner on the fire every evening with ease.

The toilet/shower block was better than most houses.

The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Thanks Anne!

Although the park was closed during our stay (midweek) the grounds around the campsite were beautiful, fantastic range of tree species.

The carpark for the huts is literally right next to them, some reviews would make you think it's a long walk, total rubbish.

A horrible social experiment07/09/2021

    The area is beautiful.

    Disliked:

Check the reviews refer to the camping and not the pod experience. The site is run like a horrible social experiment where the campers have no drinking water, washing up facilities and terrible toilets and shower whilst the pods have good ,facilities we were asked not to use! The only camping toilets have a row of urinals and this was worrying for my teenage daughters and felt like a safeguarding risk. I also hated being locked in the camp at night from 9pm. It meant we couldn't make the most of the area and especially the areas of dark skies and pub dinners, incase we got locked out. We had a medical emergency one morning and would not have been able to get to hospital if it had happened over night. The Animals in the park were nice to see but it soon became clear they were all also on the rare meat menu! Beware if you think this is a good attraction for young children. Beside the fee we paid to camp, the park was extra plus when you are in there many things are not a part of the ticket price. This was the strangest campsite we have been to and coloured our experience. It has lots of rigid rules such as a two hour arrival window(and they rang me to see how far away I was when we had travelled from Cornwall!) and you are asked to sign a contract but you get no facilities or even basic friendliness in return. Dont go there!

From the manager...

Thank you for your review; we appreciate all feedback whether it be good or bad. We would however like to add a few comments:

Drinking water and washing up facilities are available for all guests to use situated by the pods.
The urinals are to be removed this winter and we do understand your concerns regarding this point.

For security the main park gates have always been locked at night and all guests have the on-site wardens 24/7 mobile number to contact in case of emergency, we are however reviewing this.

The animal park is the main feature on site with camping and pods being offered to guests who wish to visit the animal park and its surrounding woodland. Ticket entry to the park is just £8 per person or £28 for a family of 4 and this admits camping and pod guests’ entry to the animal park on all days of their stay – so really good value.

Guests that book animal park tickets online are asked to choose a 2-hour arrival window, this helps us so not all guests arrive at the same time and was particularly useful during Covid restrictions.
Whilst we do sell meat from the reception shop most of this is bred and reared at a farm in Great Eccleston and only the wild boar is sold from the park.

We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us.

The peaceful secure area for kids to play in and if you paid for tenting and you have book tickets for the park you can go in as many times as you want between opening hours

    Disliked:

I dislike the camping toliet and shower block it is disgusting and you feel like a second class citizen as if you go over to pods they have heated cubicles with shower, toilets and wash facilities .. they need to do this for the camping side too ..
another think I disliked but it’s not the places fault was being woken up by a mole trying to dig their way into my back 😂.. loads on mole hills on the camping field ..

From the manager...

Thankyou Angela for your review; we are pleased you and your children enjoyed your stay and visit to the animal park.
Whilst the tent field shower & toilets are not like the camping pods shower & toilets, they are always kept very clean. We are looking to upgrade these over the winter months

PS sorry about the moles lol.

Lovely small, quiet but spacious site. Field was flat and easy to pitch in. Toilet facilities are basic but enough for the size of the site - the ones at the pod field are newer and slightly nicer, and you can use those as well. All the staff at the park were really friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed being able to enter the site any time during the week with our wristbands. Park staff live on site in a caravan, always good to know someone is there if needed. We'll happily book to stay here again.

    Disliked:

No facility for chilling cool blocks. As we stayed for a week this would have been very useful. Just be aware and plan your food accordingly!

    Lovely simple campsite, with benches.
    Toilets were lovely and clean.
Shower was also lovely and clean.
Love how there was a trolly left for us to use to pull all our equipment over to where we wanted to pitch up.
The actual wild boar park farm was fantastic! Entrance was only £8 each and there was such a wide range of animals and things to do, chicks could be held throughout the day not just at specific times, the food was just £1 a bag and there was a fantastic bubble lady there making beautiful bubbles for the children to chase all day!
We all loved our camping trip and will definitely be one of the most memorable ones! Thank you so much

    Disliked:

The WiFi didn’t stretch to our tent pitch, however this was only something my children didn’t like, I myself was not that bothered.

We only just got back from camping at Bowland wild boar animal park. What an amazing time we have had. The camp site is small but quiet and well looked after. The toilets and shower blocks are cleaned daily and there are additional toilets by the camping pods, which are newer than the camping toilets.
The staff at the park are lovely and very helpful, they looked after us really well and we will definatley be going back next year 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
