Bowland Wild Boar Park: The wild boar animal park

General

  • Site in a wildlife centre in the Forest of Bowland’s Ribble valley
  • Just under 10 minutes’ drive from Chipping and 40 from Preston
  • Petting zoo, play area, café and pond; marked walking trails on site

For a family escape with an educational twist consider a stay at Bowland Wild Boar Park, a site set in the middle of a wildlife centre that aims to get kids up to speed on conservation and animal welfare. This place is topnotch for groups with younger members keen on cuddling creatures like lambs and baby chicks, or seeing more exotic breeds such as white wallabies, emus and water buffaloes.

Other activities with a farmyard focus available at this spot in the Forest of Bowland Area of Natural Beauty include tractor and trailer rides (in the school holidays and on weekends) as well as wildlife walks inside the lush green Ribble valley with fells and woodland all around. Named paths aimed at kids and adults alike range from the Cartoon and Totem Pole trails to the Bluebell Walk. A play area is also on site.

If you’d rather sit and watch the wildlife, a café is opposite the pond at the park where birds fly in to take titbits from the feeder; for other ways to spy winged critters in their natural habitat, you could also wander beside the nearby Hodder river.

After lunch at the café, spark up the barbecue for dinner – local produce is plentiful at the nearby farm shop. Another café plus a couple of pubs are in Chipping just over five minutes’ drive away if you’d prefer to spend less time cooking and more time spreading out next to the firepit back on base after a meal made by someone else.

Bowland Wild Boar Park has shower and toilet blocks and dishwashing stations with hot water.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Please note that the animal park within Bowland Wild Boar Park is only open at the weekends and during school holidays from February half term through to October half term. Stays can be booked outside of these times but please be aware that the animal park will not be open. Please also note that tickets for the animal park must be booked separately.

rural location, spacious pitchers with very friendly helpful staff. frozen homemade burgers in store got the water buffalo, Delicious.

    Disliked:

opening too late closing too early 10:30am- 4:30pm, understand tractor ride, feeding & petting of the animals but the actual play park off limits to kids not right, one of main reason booked this site. should make this more clear as other campers were unaware of this.

The setting and park are lovely - there's plenty of woodland to explore and the park has plenty for kids of all ages. The pitches are pretty flat and the ground is nice and dry and soft. Lots of wildlife around too - hedgehogs were regular evening visitors and there were pheasants and grouse around the tent in the early morning.

    Disliked:

It's not really fair to judge the whole park on this, but one member of staff was pretty rude to the kids and an older member of the family in two different incidents. Maybe she was just having a bad weekend.

Lovely site with nice walks and it was handy having the farm so close. Staff were all amazing, can’t fault them at all.

    Disliked:

Not being able to drive to the pitch. This information is on the website but we didn’t realise how hard it would be to carry our camping equipment to and fro. There is a trolley to help with this but only one between pods and tents. On the Saturday night there was VERY loud music very nearby that carried on until 5am. Staff originally said it was coming from the pods but then said it was coming from off site.

Friendly very helpful staff. Big farm to visit.

    Disliked:

Farm is ok seen most of it in few hours. Too camp and go to farm and tractors ride buy dinner the place can add up in costs there should be some kind of discount if you staying camping. Shops are miles away. Need to travel outwards to keep the cost not going throw the roof even more. Sainsbury’s is 20mins away and is a must.

Lovely surroundings. Nice, clean site. Staff friendly. Toilet and shower facilities clean and plenty of hot water. Good outdoor washing facilities for dishes. Great first family camping trip. Our 4 year old loved it! Nice camping field - not busy so plenty of room for little one to run around. He already wants to go back!

The Wild Boar Park itself is great. Good value - pay once and visit for the length of your stay - we spent a very good day and a half there. Our little boy especially loved the animals, the kinetic sand, the playground, the tractor ride and the 'Rabbit Burrow' to run through.

Local attractions

There may be much to keep you at this wildlife park but family-friendly activities are all around the region too, with the rare breeds of cattle at Cobble Hey Farm & Gardens 25 minutes’ drive away and the rainy day workshops and events at Barton Grange Garden Centre within half an hour.

If it’s sunny, Brock Bottoms Picnic Site (25 minutes) is an excellent spot for having a spread – followed up with an ice cream made courtesy of the milk from the dairy cows at Mrs Dowsons Farm half an hour away.

Famous places for the kids are also within an hour’s drive, like the rides at the Blackpool seaside; for grownups, the fell walks of the Lake District are the same distance away.
