  • Well-maintained Delph site with lovely views over Saddleworth valley
  • A 15-minute drive to the Peak District; half an hour to Manchester
  • Pub and farm shop close by; easy access to nearby Pennine Way
If you fancy mixing up some time exploring the northern parts of the Peak District National Park and some city time in Manchester, then Dodgers Field could well be the place for you. This handily placed Yorkshire site is just outside Delph and about 10 minutes’ drive from the lovely village of Uppermill, with views over the Saddleworth valley and the edge of the national park about 15 minutes’ drive away. That means the atmosphere is rural indeed – so it might be hard to believe that the centre of Manchester is only about 10 miles away and easily accessed by car or Metrolink. Pitches here are set up in a well-maintained five-acre grass field that welcomes families and dogs (it’s fully fenced so you can walk dogs safely and securely). Waste water facilities and a water point have been set up in the field, and there’s a car parking area on a solid surface. Nearby Uppermill is a good place to head to for restaurants, pubs, cafés and independent shops; closer to home, there’s a pub about 10 minutes’ walk away and a farm shop/café within five minutes’ drive. And to work up an appetite for those meals and drinks? Well, the Pennine Way is close by and there are lots of other great cycling and walking trails around to stretch your legs on too, so there are plenty of ways to earn that drink and dinner.

Local attractions

Coming to the area in search of scenic walks? You’ll have plenty to choose from – as well as the Pennine Way (which was the National Trail to be set up when it opened in 1965), there are also shorter options around, including those around Dovestone Reservoir and those on Marsden Moor (both 15 minutes’ drive). For more of a leisurely day out, perhaps head up to Uppermill (10 minutes’ drive) for a visit to the Saddleworth Museum followed by a boat ride along the canal. Alternatively, try Holmfirth (half an hour) to see the TV-themed Summer Wine Exhibition and visit Holmfirth Vineyard. There’s an awful lot to see in the Peak District, but if you fancy leaving it all behind in favour of urban landscapes that’s easily done with a day out in Manchester. Drive to the city in half an hour or catch the Metrolink from Oldham – either way, the city’s museums (including the Football Museum and Imperial War Museum North), theatres, sports venues and other attractions should give you plenty to do.
