Ruby shepherd's hut

Liked The area is beautiful, the owner is really friendly and after check in we were left alone for the entire stay.

Completely off grid, so no electric (which we loved). We had a log burner inside the hut, and you can purchase extra wood for £10 (we did have a small box of wood left in the hut for free)

Dog friendly, we will definitely be back!

Disliked Nothing

Thomas shepherd's hut

Liked Absolutely beautiful, so peaceful, one of the most tranquil spot I have stayed in. The bed was really comfortable. The sound of nature was beautiful, and the treat of a little stream and safe place to walk the dogs. Hosts were excellent 👌

Thomas shepherd's hut

Liked Beautiful setting inside fruit orchard. The Shepherd Huts are spaced privately around. The huts are amply equipped with individual cooking areas and facilities.
It is suitably located for the Lakes (Ullswater literally 20 mins away).
Peace n quiet at its finest.
The proprietors are really really nice too..
Dogs enjoyed the river on the footpath adjacent.
Lovely thoughts like marshmallows and sticks for roasting, wood available for firepit or log burner.
You can hear owls and we spotted a hedgehog.

Disliked No electric means no light in the evening.

This is not the fault of the site, I had not experienced off grid camping before and was unprepared!

George shepherd's hut

Liked We stayed with our two children and really enjoyed. It is very spacious and cosy. There is a bunk bed and a small sofa. The bunk bed is quite large – the bottom is like a double bed, and the top can easily accommodate two children. The place is very quiet. We also made friends with their dog, Thomas. We would love to come back again one day. Many thanks to the hosts for such a cosy stay.

Ruby shepherd's hut

Liked The site is lovely, very quiet and close enough to the motorway which makes it great place either on your way up north or if you like to visit the Lake District. The host was amazing and very helpful. The hut itself was clean, tidy and had anything you may needed and even more! The children and us loved the place and the experience so if we're ever again in the area - definitely will book it again!!

Betty shepherd's hut

Liked Particularly liked 'Betty' shepherd's hut - its position on the site and the space around it is perfect. Loved the open-topped shower. Never knew a composting toilet could be so pleasant! Lovely having fruit trees and animals around.

George shepherd's hut

Liked Really lovely stay with my 8 year old. We were there for the August named storm and the cabin was cosy and well equipped. The owners were extremely welcoming and responsive when we had queries and questions.
The bed is firm but not impossibly so and plenty of good pillows etc.

Don't be frightened of the shower-it's lovely!

Each cabin has an area by it, of open ground (big enough for some friendly badminton and swinging around some point), amongst the mowed pathways in the longer grass and flowers. Over the road there is a field which goes down to the river.

The local area is peaceful rolling countryside close enough to the lakes to hop over (we visited Aira Force and walked down Derwent Water and got the boat ferry back up, and enjoyed local walks at wonderfully peaceful rivers and villages.)

(We also had signal with Three mobile.)

Disliked Not a lot springs to mind.

Local attractions

This site is in the sweet spot between the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and North Pennines, all of which can be reached in a 20-minute drive or less. Stick Ullswater (30 minutes) in your satnav if you're on the lookout for sailing or canoeing on a big body of water; there's also a 20-mile long walking route that encircles this loveliest of lakes, with several pubs and hikers’ cafés to be found along the way. History-hunters may well want to spend a spell at Lowther Castle (20 minutes), a cracking country house with landscaped gardens. A niche but interesting option is to take a trip to Kendal Quaker Tapestry Museum (35 minutes) to see its 77 intricately embroidered panels. In the event that the kids come down with a case of museum fatigue, a trip to the movies and live shows at the Rheged Centre (20 minutes) may well be just the job. The World of Beatrix Potter (50 minutes) is another safe bet for younger tots, while more mature teens may favour a high trees jaunt at Go Ape Grizedale (an hour and 10 minutes).
