General

  • Modern shepherd's huts on a peaceful Eden Valley smallholding
  • A 15-minute drive from Penrith; half an hour from Ullswater
  • Rural site with far-reaching views and barbecues provided

If you're on the lookout for comfy Cumbria stays, check out the accommodation at Foxwold Huts and Camping, a peaceful farm site set over eight secluded acres of rural land. Surrounded as they are by green surrounds and finished to a high standard inside and out, these handsome huts make quite the pretty picture and are an all-round brilliant backdrop for stints in the Cumbria countryside.

Shepherd's huts have come on quite a bit since pre-industrial times – these models come with barbecue areas, outdoor furniture, plush soft furnishings and comfy beds. They've all been thoughtfully set up far apart from other buildings in a quiet paddock, with green and grassy vistas that are rather lovely to wake up to. They don't come with showers, but separate eco toilet facilities are on hand a short walk away.

Those who are in the market for proper rural views have come to the right place: it's part of a smallholding that's taken a variety of animals under its wing over the past few years, including ponies, a flock of sheep and Talulah the resident cow (guests can't actually wander around the farm area but it's certainly a fitting background). There's also a small stream that runs through the site, with fab views over the Pennines to boot.

Foxwold Huts and Camping is a mile from Morland village centre, where there's a café, pub and historic parish church. Penrith (15 minutes' drive) is home to the nearest supermarket.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Nice host, well maintained hub and area. Some lovely horses, dogs and cat(I only saw one cat). Place is easy to find given it is rural area. Highly recommended.
Large area Plenty of your own space. Clean compost toilet. The host have given us enough portable lights and help us charge up our power bank (for our mobile phone use etc).

    Disliked:

No anything disliked. We have just miss understood the site discription "out of grid" by ourselves. I though it was about mobile phone signal but it should be electric power. It is our fault. So I couldn't use my electric rice cooker. Nevermind it is not far from town centre where I can do my shopping.

Kat the host was so welcoming along with the dogs, she gave us some great recommendations and even booked us a table at a pub nearby! She was so accommodating and lent us some wellies for the muddy walks which we forgot! We will definitely be back to stay again soon!

Absolutely fantastic! so well thought out. The owners of the farm were on hand in case we required anything, but the hut was well kitted out with everything we could possibly need. It was amazing to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sat by the fire at night time whilst gazing at the stars, could not have possibly asked for more. i have never seen so many stars in the sky! The hut can get quite cold at night time but there were plenty of extra blankets and we managed to keep warm.
We will definitely be visiting again!
Thankyou so much, just what we needed !

We absolutely loved Betty. The attention to detail Kat and Andy have paid with these huts is clear to see.

They were clean, cosy and having marshmallows provided to roast on the fire was a lovely touch.

The bed was comfortable and the extra heavy blanket for the cold nights was perfect!

Loved the ponies and dogs company too. Fabulous place, highly reccomend and will be back again soon.

    Thank you x

We had two lovely stays at Foxwold, after a mix up with our booking (my fault entirely), Kat and Andy set us up a beautiful Bell tent in the apple orchard, they absolutely can't do enough for you, felt like we were leaving old friends by the end of our stay. We loved it so much we decided to come back to stay in george on our correct dates, the cabin has everything you need for a lovely stay. If you like campfires, BBQs, starry nights and a little escape from the hustle and bustle this is the place.
The horses are lovely and the dogs come to say a little hello to the delight of our little girl.
Can't recommend enough, we've already booked our first stay next year, and I'm sure we'll be booking many more.

Lovely stay in "Betty" this weekend; everything you needed for a few days glamping was provided, including the kitchen sink. Lovely welcoming hosts who checked in to make sure there wasn't anything else you needed, whilst giving you the space to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. This was the first time I have done anything close to camping, and would highly recommend Foxwolds.

Kat was a wonderful host, the hut its self was clean and well presented and had a great outdoor cooking area. Would thoroughly recommend staying here!

Really lovely shepherd’s hut with everything you need for a relaxing break in the lakes. With a stove and sink in under the shelter attached, a BBQ to use and the fire pit is big so great for keeping warm under the stars at night. The toilet facilities etc... are very close by and kept clean. The host Katya is very friendly and helpful she even found and booked us a table at a local pub as we was struggling to find availability because we left it late on a Saturday evening. Ullswater lake is only a 10-15 min drive away and lots of other lovely walks etc... close by.

Local attractions

This site is in the sweet spot between the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and North Pennines, all of which can be reached in a 20-minute drive or less. Stick Ullswater (30 minutes) in your satnav if you're on the lookout for sailing or canoeing on a big body of water; there's also a 20-mile long walking route that encircles this loveliest of lakes, with several pubs and hikers’ cafés to be found along the way.

History-hunters may well want to spend a spell at Lowther Castle (20 minutes), a cracking country house with landscaped gardens. A niche but interesting option is to take a trip to Kendal Quaker Tapestry Museum (35 minutes) to see its 77 intricately embroidered panels.

In the event that the kids come down with a case of museum fatigue, a trip to the movies and live shows at the Rheged Centre (20 minutes) may well be just the job. The World of Beatrix Potter (50 minutes) is another safe bet for younger tots, while more mature teens may favour a high trees jaunt at Go Ape Grizedale (an hour and 10 minutes).
