Butterflowers Holiday Park: Lovely views from the pitches

General

  • Well-maintained peaceful park a minute's stroll from the beach
  • Half a mile from Haverigg and within walking distance of shops/pubs
  • Barbecues allowed; beachside café by the sand dunes

On the Cumbrian coast within a minute's stroll of a sandy beach – what an utter stunner.

Butterflowers Holiday Park is in spectacular setting on the coast and with easy access to the Lake District, next to a café which overlooks an adventure play area, sand dunes and the sea. It's half a mile from the small fishing village of Haverigg, on the Duddon estuary five minutes' drive from Millom.

Coniston Water and Barrow-in-Furness are both within 50 minutes; Kendal is just over an hour away, and outdoor options like hiking, golfing, pony trekking and fishing are all nearby.

Leisurely pursuits are well sorted on site too, with that beachside café for alfresco bites overlooking the water. Barbecues are allowed: shops as well as pubs serving food are within walking distance.

Dogs are welcome to come and stay at Butterflowers Holiday Park throughout the camping season.

Site was perfect for our 2 night stay. Was busy but not loud. Pitches are level and good sized! The owner takes you to your pitch. Dog friendly. The showers and toilets were clean and hot!! There is a camp kitchen and laundry room. Great stop over with plenty of walks from site and the beach is just across the road. Close to a shop for essentials. Would recommend and would stay again!

Location is spot on. Beautiful walks. Lovely little village enough amenities

    Disliked:

Showers nowhere to put your clothes while using the facilities. They are not wide enough just a wet room of sorts. Some of the pitches are a bit too near tourers. Not very private.

Good location for beach & exploring Lake District19/09/2022

The site was quiet. Only adults there when we were staying during term time. Mostly permanent pitches but a few tourists there. It’s a minutes walk to the beach & you can walk for miles along the sand or in the dunes. Good access to the west coast for exploring the Lake District. Level hardstanding pitches. Local cafe chip shop, shop & pub.

    Disliked:

This might sound daft but there’s a lot of cockerels in the vicinity! Expect to be woken by crowing competitions!
I wasn’t overwhelmed by the welcome when we arrived. After a 5 hour drive a nice warm welcome would have been appreciated. We were shown to the pitch though. The site has a mountain behind & beach in front but there are no views from the pitches. Sadly our pitch had a lot of debris & rubbish behind it which we cleared up. The shower block is adequate but could do with some additional making over. We understand from other campers who’d been before the site has deteriorated over time which is disappointing. There was a distinct lack of cleaning in the showers & toilets. Four days went by with the same hair in a pile on the floor and common for there to be only one toilet available with paper. Maybe nearing the end of the season but still expect good standards of cleanliness & hygiene. After several nights of our booking whilst we were out exploring we actually booked into another site for the remainder of our stay. We felt this was very overpriced for how it was.

    Tired shower facilities
Hardstanding was just mud after rain. Very few stones left

Local attractions

Start your local activities with a couple of hours at Millom Discovery Centre, five minutes' drive away at Millom station on Cumbria Coastal Line. The centre has a museum, a Rail Room with exhibits on the area's railway heritage, a mining area with full-sized mining cage, and a café, gift shop and prehistory gallery. Adventurous kids – and their grownups – should also like the costume room, where a nicely eclectic selection of 18th- and 19th-century threads await for dressing up.

It's 10 minutes' drive from Butterflowers to the Hodbarrow RSPB reserve, a coastal lagoon on a former iron mine overlooking the Duddon estuary. Terns, oystercatchers, ringed plovers and redshanks are among the species that flock here; look out too for the protected great crested grebes on the reserve's island.

Venturing further afield, it's 40 minutes' drive to the South Lakes Safari Zoo (formerly South Lakes Wild Animal Park) at Barrow-in-Furness, and just under an hour to treetop antics at Grizedale Forest's Go Ape. Windermere is an hour and five minutes away.
