  • Well-maintained peaceful park a minute's stroll from the beach
  • Half a mile from Haverigg and within walking distance of shops/pubs
  • Barbecues allowed; beachside café by the sand dunes
On the Cumbrian coast within a minute's stroll of a sandy beach – what an utter stunner. Butterflowers Holiday Park is in spectacular setting on the coast and with easy access to the Lake District, next to a café which overlooks an adventure play area, sand dunes and the sea. It's half a mile from the small fishing village of Haverigg, on the Duddon estuary five minutes' drive from Millom. Coniston Water and Barrow-in-Furness are both within 50 minutes; Kendal is just over an hour away, and outdoor options like hiking, golfing, pony trekking and fishing are all nearby. Leisurely pursuits are well sorted on site too, with that beachside café for alfresco bites overlooking the water. Barbecues are allowed: shops as well as pubs serving food are within walking distance. Dogs are welcome to come and stay at Butterflowers Holiday Park throughout the camping season.

Liked Flat, clean facilities, clean area, space around pitch and location.
On seafront and walking distance to cafe shops pubs. Welcoming staff.

Disliked Women's toilet door lock continuously jammed and broken and could not unlock/open.
We have the same locks at work, I know how they work, this one is clearly broken. It's not fun trying to open for 10 minutes. It also wasn't only me.
It was being looked at as we left but I suggest that if it doesn't work, it needs replacing with a different type of lock. This has lowered the scores of our review, if it happened again, I would not return.

Liked Site was easy access and close to village and amenities.

Disliked We were pitched up next to a seasonal caravan. The occupants went out and left 2 labradors in the caravan for over 3 hrs in really warm weather. They were constantly barking and crying the whole time. The warden wasn't much help as had no contact details for owners. When they did turn up they were not very happy that we complained. An argument occurred which got very heated. The warden came round in the morning and seemed to make out that there dogs were barking at our dog and we had been drinking. All other guests were with us in complaining and agreed that were right to complain. Stay clear of any pitches next to 39. Unless you like noisy dogs and smell of cannabis.

Liked Good size pitches, plenty of space. Nice and quiet, close to the beach , pubs and chippy. Enjoyed our stay so much we decided to stay on a seasonal pitch for the rest of the season which are very reasonably priced.
Friendly staff nothing too much trouble, dog friendly also. Didn't use the laundry so can't comment. Husband used shower rooms and said they had everything needed.

Liked When we first arrived the couple that showed us around introduced themselves. Sandra & Ray went through everything with us and were very friendly. Made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The views were beautiful.

Disliked Maybe better signage ie for clean & waste water points.

Local attractions

Start your local activities with a couple of hours at Millom Discovery Centre, five minutes' drive away at Millom station on Cumbria Coastal Line. The centre has a museum, a Rail Room with exhibits on the area's railway heritage, a mining area with full-sized mining cage, and a café, gift shop and prehistory gallery. Adventurous kids – and their grownups – should also like the costume room, where a nicely eclectic selection of 18th- and 19th-century threads await for dressing up. It's 10 minutes' drive from Butterflowers to the Hodbarrow RSPB reserve, a coastal lagoon on a former iron mine overlooking the Duddon estuary. Terns, oystercatchers, ringed plovers and redshanks are among the species that flock here; look out too for the protected great crested grebes on the reserve's island. Venturing further afield, it's 40 minutes' drive to the South Lakes Safari Zoo (formerly South Lakes Wild Animal Park) at Barrow-in-Furness, and just under an hour to treetop antics at Grizedale Forest's Go Ape. Windermere is an hour and five minutes away.
