  • Family-friendly site with stunning views across Solway Firth
  • A 10-minute drive from the Lake District and 20 from the coast
  • Shops and restaurants five miles away in Wigton
Rural rambles without having to leave base – bag a berth at Blaithwaite House, 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Wigton, for a taste of life on a Cumbria country estate. And not just any old country estate – this one stretches for a generous 200 acres, bringing with it 50 acres of woodland to frolic in, and a walking trail that covers over two miles (Yes, it’s a big place, so best be picking up a map before striding forth.) Enjoyed that warm up? More walks, bike rides and other outdoorsy pursuits are 10 minutes’ drive away in the Lake District National Park or 20 minutes away on the Solway coast. Time to catch your breath? Settle in on site for splendid views over the Solway Firth or to cook up something tasty at the barbecue and firepit area (shop ahead and you can stash your supplies in the site’s fridges and freezer). If cooking doesn’t appeal, decamp to a local pub – two such establishments an easy five-minute drive away serve up homemade food. Still got energy to burn? Play areas, a football field and a playing field offer plenty of space to let off steam. If you’ve got a gaggle of buddies on hand, book ahead to mercilessly hunt them down with a game of laser tag… but whatever you get up to, don’t forget to give a cheery wave to Snowy the goat and her chicken pals. The site may be sizeable, but facilities aren’t far-flung – washing-up areas and individual toilets and showers are in the pitches field and supplied with hot water from the eco-friendly biomass boilers.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The views and the grounds were all very beautiful. The playgrounds were good although designed for older children so my younger daughter was unable to play much. The goats and chickens were a good addition.

Disliked: The field we stayed on (paddock) was clay soil to did not drain, after a fair few days rain it was very boggy and muddy. Even the few days of dry weather did nothing to dry out the ground or mud. The electricity was off for a day which we were warned about, but we weren't aware this included the showers and water in some of the blocks. Despite the information all stating it is a family site and no noise after 11 this doesn't actually seem to be enforced as several families on our field had not problems partying until the early hours with loud music and shouting.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked: Upon arrival we were earlier than check in time but we were allowed to pitch up which was great. It was chucking it down and the site had a room open with table tennis, Jenga and connect 4 so we were able to kill some time whilst the rain died off. When we set up we had pegs missing and a snapped pole, the office staff and handyman (I am assuming his role) were extremely helpful. They sourced us spare pegs to use and someone had thrown out a tent so we were able to salvage a makeshift pole, if they didn’t do this our little holiday would of been spoiled so extra thanks to those two for being so kind. The outdoor facilities were great, park by the back of the main building was brilliant. A huge field which we would have made use of if the weather had been better! The animals were an extra treat as well as we got to see some little chicks, feeding the goats some grass was lovely too. We also tried the mini golf, this was a bit of a tired course but it was completely free and we had a good laugh anyways so worth it. The park on the campsite was perfect for my 7 year old. The site is on a bit of a hill so the views were incredible, 10/10. Facilities available included showers, toilets, washing up sinks, a fridge and a freezer. Only part we didn’t try were the showers as we used some off site instead. For a campsite I would say the facilities were completely adequate. We never struggled to gain access to a toilet as they had 6 separate ones (with a shower in each!). The little huts also had a heated towel rail which was a nice touch, not a lot of space to move around though as the two of us tried to get ready but we managed fine.

Disliked: If I had to be picky I would say that the toilets were a bit smelly at times, not sure if this was due to people not flushing or if there was a sewer problem. I often saw cleaners coming and going so they were clean. I also felt that they looked a bit worn out with a few rusty parts such as the holder for toiletries and trims being loose. I didn’t notice any bar or food type area which I’m sure I saw mentioned on the website, however we didn’t ask where this was so it could of been somewhere we might not of seen. No signal on the campsite, which is to be expected when camping. Rated the site low on WiFi for this reason but I assume the accommodation in the house provides WiFi capabilities.

Electric grass tent pitch (five person)

Liked: The staff were very helpful and friendly, there was a lovely little pub on site that opened of a night time to get us out the crappy weather and a pizza van. There was a help yourself mini golf which was a good touch too although it really could do with some tlc.

Disliked: Although the weather wasn’t their fault, the ground was flooded a lot. Toilet cubicles could also do with getting cleaned more regularly and shower cubicle locked didn’t work which led to someone walking in on us in the shower..

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Beautiful campsite, lots of trees and nearby woodland walks with easily accessible toilet/shower/washing facilities and communal fridge. Reception were friendly and Blaithwaite offer lots of evening activities and food vans, ideal for families with games, play area and small farmyard animals.

Disliked: Sadly our first night was spoiled by obnoxious behaviour from one set of campers, a large family booking who partied until around 4am blaring loud music, drinking heavily and behaving aggressively. I highly recommend the owners put in place an evening patrol to ensure campers are respecting the 11pm noise curfew and that others feel safe during their stay. As a pair of females camping alone we felt vulnerable, which was a real shame given the otherwise pleasant aspects of the site. We’re not sure we’ll return on this basis. The shower/toilet cubicles weren’t the cleanest we’ve come across and could do with improved maintenance for the price, although they were easily accessible from the van and we didn’t struggle to find a free cubicle.

Local attractions

As well as the hiking trails of the Lake District National Park, active options nearby include Bassenthwaite Lakes, 20 minutes’ drive from base, where there are lakeside paths, boat hire and tours and tastings at Lakes Distillery. Derwentwater, half an hour away, has kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing; you could also get out on the water on an Ullswater Steamer at Pooley Bridge (access 40 minutes' drive away at Penrith), cruising by some of the area's highest peaks. Historical highlights are plentiful in the region too: Carlisle Castle and Mirehouse House and Gardens are both within half an hour, Gretna Green is 40 minutes away and the remains of the great Hadrian’s Wall are reachable in about an hour. Try something a little different at the Rheged Discovery Centre, 40 minutes away, where there are cafés, craft shops and a six-storey cinema screen, all in the UK’s largest grass-covered building.
