Grass area for tents: flat land with ample space for parking next to your tent

General

  • Peaceful Lake District park near Scafell Peak and Wastwater
  • Local pub within two minutes' walk
  • Well-equipped play area, picnic tables and woodland area

Holy moly. You'll likely already be sold with the Lake District location of welcoming Church Stile Farm Holiday Park, in the midst of superbly scenic Wasdale with close-by climbing and kayaking on Scafell Pike and Wastwater.

But a hard day clambering and kayaking is always best followed by a fine ale and supper at a local watering hole, so you'll likely be sold all the more with Church Stile’s locale only two minutes’ walk from the two pubs and hotel of local hamlet Nether Wasdale. Praise be.

All is praiseworthy on site too: Church Stile Farm Holiday Park covers about seven acres of a spacious oak woodland and wildlife-laden setting, with venerable views of the Wasdale valley and the Screes mountains range.

Facilities are kept to high standards and include free hot showers in separate ladies’ and gents’ washrooms, free hairdryers (for both ladies and gents, hurrah), and a disabled/family room with baby changing unit. The laundry room has hot and cold drink vending machines, a free freezer for ice blocks, and a coin-operated washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board.

To keep the kids happy when they’re not sorting out the laundry, there’s a well-equipped play area with swings and climbing frames, a grass area for ball games, and a woodland area adjacent to the site for wildlife spotting and walks. Picnic tables are dotted around the park and barbecues/firepits are available to hire (pick up essentials for the barbie in the shop and some wood from the Church Stile team).

The location is stunning. The pitches are lovely. The toilet block is great and kept clean. The number system for the showers worked really well. A great playground for the kids and handy having a little shop on site. Although we didnt go, there was a lovely pub just outside the entrance to campsite. Overall a great experience and would definitely recommend.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but more if a minor inconvience was the lack of phone signal and internet which made planning days out more difficult. There is wifi available at the shop though to be fair if you want to sit with others doing the same thing.

    Disliked:

Not necessarily a dislike, more of a practicality thing, v limited wifi made it challenging to plan some things, like eating out and day trips - although in the same breath it was nice to switch off from the rest of the world. Just worth noting if you rely on it for planning things, getting in touch with family etc. There is wifi available near the reception but we found it to be temperamental at times.

The location, campsite itself, and the staff. The site had beautiful views and was adequately spaced out, with COVID-19 measures that made me feel very comfortable. Staff were helpful and friendly, and communal spaces such as showers and toilets were always clean when I used them.

    Disliked:

No WiFi I could see, and the reception/shop could've been open for longer (it is closed for a few hours around midday) but it isn't much of an issue

Fabulous location, wonderfully clean and warm shower blocks with a good number of toilets for the size of the site. Fantastic shop and friendly staff.
The newly updated play area meant the children had a space to roam free and weren’t running around the campsite which was a plus too.
    Thanks for a wonderful stay.

Local attractions

Whether you’re climbing, canoeing or just ambling gently around with picnic in backpack, the Wasdale valley is a pretty perfect place for a Lake District hol.

The valley is over 10 miles long if you fancy a full day’s historic hike, starting from the village of Wasdale Head, the start of the Three Peaks Challenge and the former home of Cumbrian pub landlord Will Ritson, whose tall tales led to the still going strong Biggest Liar Competition. One of the tiniest churches in the land, St Olaf’s, is at Wasdale in its ‘Viking fields’: Wasdale was originally settled by Norse farmers and the beams in the church are rumoured to be from Viking longships.

Climbers can get to Scafell Pike and Great Gable from Wasdale Head, but walkers can continue along the valley length down to the village of Gosforth, which has the biggest Viking Cross in England at the Grade I-listed St Mary’s Church.

Finally, fancy the beach? The Cumbrian coast at Seascale is seven miles from Church Stile Farm (walkable, you might reckon), with miles of sandy beach leading to the Lake District’s only coastal village, the fishing village of Ravenglass.

Must see

  • Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (5.3 miles)
  • Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum (13.5 miles)
  • Whinlatter Forest & Visitor Centre (13.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Wasdale, Eskdale and Duddon (0.0 miles)
  • Buttermere and Ennerdale (9.9 miles)
