Church Stile Farm Holiday Park: Grass area for tents: flat land with ample space for parking next to your tent

General

  • Peaceful Lake District park near Scafell Peak and Wastwater
  • Pub, licensed riverside café and farm shop within five minutes' walk
  • Well-equipped play area, picnic tables and woodland area

Holy moly. You'll likely already be sold with the Lake District location of welcoming Church Stile Farm Holiday Park, in the midst of superbly scenic Wasdale with close-by climbing and kayaking on Scafell Pike and Wastwater.

But a hard day clambering and kayaking is always best followed by a fine ale and supper at a local watering hole, so you'll likely be sold all the more with Church Stile’s locale only two minutes’ walk from the pub in local hamlet Nether Wasdale, and a licensed riverside café too. Praise be.

All is praiseworthy on site too: Church Stile Farm Holiday Park covers about seven acres of a spacious oak woodland and wildlife-laden setting, with venerable views of the Wasdale valley and the Screes mountains range.

Facilities are kept to high standards and include free hot showers in separate ladies’ and gents’ washrooms, free hairdryers (for both ladies and gents, hurrah), and a disabled/family room with baby changing unit. The laundry room has hot and cold drink vending machines, a free freezer for ice blocks, and a coin-operated washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board.

To keep the kids happy when they’re not sorting out the laundry, there’s a well-equipped play area with swings and climbing frames, a grass area for ball games, and a woodland area adjacent to the site for wildlife spotting and walks. Picnic tables are dotted around the park and barbecues/firepits are available to hire (pick up essentials for the barbie in the shop and some wood from the Church Stile team, or venture to the farm shop a few minutes' walk away).

To start off we were greeted by a very lovely and kind lady who quickly got us checked in, and gave us a very detailed map on where everything is. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the water, toilets and wash up area were all really close to us!

Due to our poor planning, the weather was abismal during most of our stay, so we chose to order some pizza from a local takeaway for our first nights meal, it was very nice and delivered in a timely manner.

Our first nights sleep was a bit uncomfortable, but that was only due to us not having been camping in a very long time. Although, I can't explain how amazing it was to wake up and see the beautiful hills in front of you.

Due to the almost constant downpoor of rain during our stay, we asked the team that looked after the site if we could use our camping stove under the shelter next to the reception / shop. They were very helpful and accommodated our request immediately (which was a life saver!)

The shop was very well stocked with basically everything you needed in a pinch. It had locally sourced bacon, sausages and some ale, which were amazing!

The facilities were impeccable for a campsite. The toilet area was spotless everytime we went, and the showers had proper hot water! There's a washing up area with plenty of sinks, and some cover from the rain. The laundry room was a nice surprise, with a washer and dryer to clean any clothes you've got, along with a freezer for any freeze bricks for cooler boxes.

The other visitors to the site were incredibly friendly and chatty, which was a drastic change from where we were from!

There's plenty of things to do around the campsite. We planned on doing a few walks, but due to the weather we only managed to get one walk in. We filled our time by going to the nearby Motor museum, and a Safari Zoo. We can 10000% recommend both of these, they were amazing.

really clean facilities and lovely quiet and family environment with helpful staff and spectacular views.

    Disliked:

FYI two gorgeous pubs next to the entrance. BOTH DO NOT SERVE FOOD unless you're a hotel guest. You can get meals delivered from a local pub but nowhere within walking distance that serves food. Would have been good to know.

Also, one pub advertised card only but then got hit by lightening so was cash only, we had to drive to the nearest town to find a cash point. I'd take both to be safe.

The site was clean and well managed. The views were impressive in an area of outstanding natural beauty
There was a well stocked shop on the site with a range of supplies and the staff were always friendly and helpful
Showers and toilets were adequate and cleaned every day.

    Disliked:

Wi-Fi coverage was only available at the reception area and mobile signal was poor
Local pub was only serving meals to residents despite being the owners of the campsite as well

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. I am afraid that we don't own the local pubs, in fact we aren't able to get a meal in there either!

The site has great facilities with a fully stocked shop with all the essentials. The surrounding area is quiet and secluded and the views nearby are stunning, especially around Waswater which is only an hours walk away at most. There was plenty of space for all the tents and the site was quiet and had a relaxed and happy vibe. The toilets/showers were well maintained and the food-ware washing facilities were good. All in all a decent place to stay if you’re looking for a retreat from everyday life. Phone signal was very poor but this is mentioned on the website and in some ways if your looking to escape everyday life and enjoy nature, this may be a blessing.

Local attractions

Whether you’re climbing, canoeing or just ambling gently around with picnic in backpack, the Wasdale valley is a pretty perfect place for a Lake District hol.

The valley is over 10 miles long if you fancy a full day’s historic hike, starting from the village of Wasdale Head, the start of the Three Peaks Challenge and the former home of Cumbrian pub landlord Will Ritson, whose tall tales led to the still going strong Biggest Liar Competition. One of the tiniest churches in the land, St Olaf’s, is at Wasdale in its ‘Viking fields’: Wasdale was originally settled by Norse farmers and the beams in the church are rumoured to be from Viking longships.

Climbers can get to Scafell Pike and Great Gable from Wasdale Head, but walkers can continue along the valley length down to the village of Gosforth, which has the biggest Viking Cross in England at the Grade I-listed St Mary’s Church.

Finally, fancy the beach? The Cumbrian coast at Seascale is seven miles from Church Stile Farm (walkable, you might reckon), with miles of sandy beach leading to the Lake District’s only coastal village, the fishing village of Ravenglass.

  • Whinlatter Forest & Visitor Centre (13.9 miles)
