  • Family-friendly Yorkshire Dales farm near the Dales Way
  • In southern Cumbria, a mile from the centre of Sedbergh
  • Walk to Sedbergh for dog-friendly pubs, cafés and eateries in 15 mins
There's something mightily tempting about staying on a working Dales farm with cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and goats. Farm and Fell Campsite is a peaceful farm site in scenic southern Cumbria, just 15 minutes' walk away from Sedbergh, where guests can get stuck into a number of dog-friendly pubs, cafés and family-friendly eateries. This site is something of a geographical oddity, being located within the borders of the Yorkshire Dales but outside the boundaries of Yorkshire. The surroundings have all the stunning scenery you'd expect from this national park location, with highlights including the nearby river Rawthey, miles of dry stone walls and views over the spectacular Howgill Fells. Walkers itching to get out and explore it all have footpaths (including the Dales Way) that start almost opposite the site entrance. Every pitch at Farm and Fell Campsite has its own firepit; hardwood logs, sticks and firelighters are available from the farmer between 6pm and 8pm every evening. Farm activities may also be available (to be booked separately – mention you're interested on the booking form to learn more). These include lamb feeding, calf rearing, goat walking and horse and carriage rides into town.

What customers say

This campsite offers beautiful scenery and a relaxed atmosphere, with many praising the friendly staff and the opportunity to interact with farm animals. Its location is ideal for local walks and a short stroll into Sedbergh. While basic facilities are available, some guests noted a need for improvement and more washing-up areas. Despite minor drawbacks, many found it to be good value and plan to return.

Main Field non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Stayed for 1 night with my daughter , quiet well set up site , shower and toilet block was clean and tidy , open barn area was clean and tidy with more than enough room to sit and relax and eat if weather isn’t on side . Very relaxed environment, can buy logs for fire if needed and isn’t to far to main town of sedbergh , river flows through right past the end of the entrance gate , you can stand on road and look down excellent if you find the water sound therapeutic, enjoyed and we’ll definitely be booking again to stay longer than the one night.

Main Field non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Clean and tidy site in beautiful surroundings. Good information signage at the entrance for new arrivals and ample hardstanding/carparking at the entrance means you can read the signage from your car. We stayed at the main campsite which is set out with toilet/shower/pot washing block at the top adjacent to the entrance, then two facing lines of pitches running down the field with track between. Individual pitches clearly demarked by cut grass with uncut boundaries and plenty of space between so it doesnt feel overcrowded. Pitches large enough for large tent and a car. You can pick which pitch to go for and any pitches which are prone to waterlogging in extremely wet weather are clearly signed. The quiet time at night/early morning seemed to be observed by everyone when we stayed.

Disliked No wash hand basins in the toilets, had to wash hands in the single sink used for washing pots and pans. No recycling bins so all rubbish had to be bagged together.

Main Field non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good location, walkable into Sedbergh and other local walks. Peaceful site overall. Clan and tidy.

Disliked Multiple toilets located around the site but other than the three near the entrance they were all portaloo type ones.
Toilet roll regularly ran out.
No basins to wash your hands in and only one sink to wash up in that was sometimes used for people brushing their teeth.

From the manager: Sometimes reviews say more about the author than the campsite.

On the weekend of this visit there were approx 250 campers on site and we didn’t receive a single phone call with any issues (including toilet roll or showers).

The toilets and showers are checked every 2 hours. It is possible that a single cubicle ran out of toilet role - but at no point did 2 or more, so there was always toilet roll available if you were to look or be patient.

We don’t have mirrors because people obsessed with vanity create delays in toilets and sinks leading to big queues. You can look at yourself anytime, get out and enjoy the landscape.

Regarding value for money. A pitch includes a free fire pit, free showers, unlimited waste disposal, up to 4 adults or 6 people in total, not to mention free unlimited access to the livestock.

My challenge by return is if anyone thinks they can find a comparable price within a 5 mile radius of Sedbergh, I’ll give them free camping for a year with Farm & Fell.

Sincerely

Brian

Main Field non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Small site, nice feel. Friendly staff driving by on a quad asking whether you required any wood, bricks etc for fire. Great value at £25 for the night. 3 toilets were fine, couple of showers and a sink. Seemed to cope well considering all the lower pitches in the family area were taken. Plenty of sheep, goats and a couple of horses on site for the kids to enjoy.

Main Field non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Site is big and with beautiful scenery. Area is well situated with easy access to Lake district.

Disliked Due to us coming late on Friday main field was full. We stayed in secondary field.
Unfortunately grass there was uncut making it a bit of a problem. Neighbours had party till 4am.

Local attractions

Guests at Farm and Fell Campsite have access to the Dales Way footpath within a few minutes' walk of base, opening up 80 miles of traffic-free trails, most of which run alongside local watercourses. Whether you head south to the Pennines or north to the Lakeland foothills, walking in this part of the world is always a very special experience. Sedbergh town centre (15 minutes' walk) is also close by, with places to stop for snacks and drinks and a couple of book shops (one of them very large) where you can pick up some holiday reading material. For more low-key local things to do, check out Farfield Mill five minutes' drive down the road, or set off on a round trip on the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway from Garsdale (20 minutes' drive). Into your sport? Try Killington Sailing Association's watersports centre (10 minutes) or the Lakeland Climbing Centre (30 minutes).
