Farm and Fell Campsite: Sunset at Birks Fell

General

  • Family-friendly 200-acre Yorkshire Dales farm near the Dales Way
  • in southern Cumbria, a mile from the centre of Sedbergh
  • Hot meals and barbecue packs available; farm activities for guests

Farm and Fell Campsite thinks that every guest has the makings of a fine farmer, so get involved with hands-on agricultural activities at this peaceful farm park on the outskirts of Sedbergh and unleash your inner Dalesman or Daleswoman in scenic southern Cumbria.

This site is something of a geographical oddity, being located within the borders of the Yorkshire Dales but outside the boundaries of Yorkshire. The surroundings have all the smashing scenery you'd expect from this national park location, with highlights including the nearby river Rawthey, miles of dry stone walls and views over the spectacular Howgill Fells. Walkers itching to get out and explore it all have footpaths (including the Dales Way) that start almost opposite the site entrance.

Farm and Fell Campsite has a dedicated on-site kitchen (available when there are 10 or more pitches on site) open for breakfast, lunch and evening meals, where you can sample a wide variety of farm-produced food. At all other times, the site will happily drop you off and pick you up in Sedbergh, where there's great local hospitality.

Farm activities like lambing, calf rearing and sheep sheering may be available (to be booked separately – mention you're interested on the booking form to learn more).

The site also has mains water, toilets, hot showers and a waste disposal point.

Please note

No electric barbecues allowed.

The restaurant is open between 04/01 and 08/29.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No charcoal barbecues allowed.

Entertainment and activities are available between 04/01 and 08/29.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

At least one of the party members must be aged 16 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

The onsite kitchen is only open when at least 15 pitches are occupied, otherwise the owners offer a free drop-off and pick-up to Sedbergh (2 minutes in the car) for families to enjoy the local hospitality instead.

The following farm experiences are available on the relevant dates (must be reserved onsite as soon as possible) :

01 April - 15 May : live lambing
20 - 22 May, 27 - 29 May and 01 - 05 June : calf rearing
10 - 12 June, 17 - 19 June, 24 - 26 June and 01 - 03 July : sheep shearing and shepherding
08 - 10 July and 15 - 17 July : Fell pony school

Everything at the farm and fell is absolutely splendid.
The ease of pitching where you feel comfortable is great not being told that's where your going makes the experience all the better.
Brian and his family really do make you feel welcome if you have an issue you only need to phone them if there not in the fields and they will be right to you.
The open air really helps my son who suffers from really bad asthma the fresh air he gets helps him tremendously.
The two children love being able to see the farms resident animals and learning all about how Brian and his family take care of them.
The portaloos are good considering lots of people use them role on when the council give them the permission to add proper toilets like they want Brian and his family can't help it that people who have the authority are dragging there feet to give him the permission he needs to implement them.
Brian and his family are always there if you need some help on anything from you've forgot something or need some local advise on what to do.
The scenery is fantastic pleasant views for miles around from wherever you pitch.
The children love this site with all the open air, the scenery and the freedom they get while there.
They can't wait til next year to get back out there and take all the views in again.
See you soon Brian and family miss you all already.

Porta loos where disgusting, weren’t emptied in the 3 days we were there , daughter tried to contact owner but received no reply back, had email to say the toilets were out of order and the porta loos were supposed to be emptied every 4 hours . Very expensive wood for your fire pit .

From the manager...

This isn’t true. No one was ever told that the portaloos would be emptied every 4 hours.

All campers were notified well in advance that the portaloos were on site and the porcelain loos were unserviceable.

Everyone was offered a free cancellation or rebook.

As it happens, out portaloo supplier was on holiday so I cleaned out the toilets all weekend (every day).

They were never disgusting, in fact of the 15 portaloos on site, only 3 needed a deep clean all bank holiday weekend.

Regarding wood, I don’t think this person knows the difference between soft wood and hard wood. We supply hard wood, kindling and firelighters for £8.

We also supply the fire pits at no cost….. not to mention free shower, animal feeding for children for £1 (donated to charity).

I welcome feedback, but this review isn’t right.

It was a lovely and secluded site, with amazing views 360 degrees around! Loved the relaxed atmosphere on a night time everyone socialising with each other. On site food was great along with the supply of logs for the fire Pitts as we couldn’t find any others in the village 😆! Over all it was a lovely stay and we will surely be visiting again next year

    Disliked:

There wasn’t much to dislike the only thing I could say for improvement was if the gates could be closed after a certain time as there were still cars going back and fourth after midnight!

From the manager...

Great feedback, thank you. I noticed it myself and it’ll be addressed next year.

We love Farm and Fell, it's a happy place, offering the best camping experience, and giving us 'space to breathe'. The site is huge and Brian opens up more fields as necessary to ensure you have space to roam, relax and play. The pet lambs and goats are super friendly, and for those who visit regularly it's lovely to see them flourish from the tiny newborns that they were at the start of the season. Brian happily shares his extensive knowledge of farming, and we have learnt so much since we've been visiting. We can't wait for the next camping season to start.

Gave the impression of a site in its’ infancy and an opportunistic business idea. We’re experienced campers and disliked the portaloos and lack of good washing up facilities. The sink in the field with cold water involved negotiating a mud bath underfoot.
