General

  • Peaceful park near Penrith in the Lake District National Park
  • In a wildlife haven overlooking Ullswater
  • Play area, football pitch and shop open in season

Squirrel! Did you know that the red squirrel is a very shy critter that mostly won’t be spied if it hears big humanly footsteps (a bit like hobbits)? Sssh: you might just spy one around beautiful Waterfoot Caravan Park, an immensely peaceful place near Penrith in the Lake District National Park.

Like the thought of spotting red squirrels in the wild, the look and location of Waterfoot should make one want to pack up and move here with some immediacy. Not only is it in the grounds of a Georgian mansion, with scurrying wildlife all round, but it overlooks gorgeous Ullswater, with steamer cruises on Lady Dorothy, famed walking routes and, we hope – carrying a notepad/sketchpad to note/sketch sightings of glorious daffodils.

Waterfoot is a family site over a most viewsome acre of land, with up-to-date showers and toilets, a shop open daily during the season, a laundry room and indoor washing-up areas to combat any Lake District rain. Sans rain, kids have a play area with swings, climbing towers, rocking toys and slide, and there’s a small football pitch for big brothers and sisters.

Reception is easily found at the front of the park, so check in and lace up your walking boots to take in the wildlife and walks of some of the prettiest parts of the country – did someone say squirrel…?

This site is a member of Lake District Estates group.

The site is well located, a short walk from Ullswater with its pubs and restaurants. It has a club house, really an old mansion with a bar.
It's real strength are the excellent couple who run it. They are informative, helpful and a pleasure to meet. Make sure you get a privilege card from them. It has some useful discount offers.

Very clean site with plenty of space particularly for our long motorhome. Hard standings were a level gravel area with a grass area next to it for sitting out.

Excellent location near to Pooley Bridge which is a 10 minute cycle ride down the hill. There is also a pedestrian path which is made up off road to start with which also gives good access.

Staff were friendly and arranged for us to have a pitch next to our friends.

We had a tour around the Ullswater Lake on the boat from Pooley Bridge the lake is much bigger than it looks and the boat trip is well worth the money.

    Disliked:

Our particular electricity point was a long way from my plot so my hook up cable wouldn't reach. I had to temporarily swap my cable with a friend.

Directions

Waterfoot Park is easily accessible from Junction 40 off the M6, the Penrith junction, but please follow the directions below rather than your satnav.

Follow the brown signs marked Ullswater Steamers from Junction 40 and drive west on the A66 for a mile before turning left at the roundabout onto the A592 towards Ullswater.

Please stay on the A592. After 2 miles you will see our sign for the entrance on your right.

If you reach the junction with the lake road you've missed us by 200 metres.

By bus, take the 108 or 508 from Penrith to Patterdale, disembarking either at Pooley Bridge and then walking over the River Eamont and along the footpath; or at Ullswater Steamer Pier then crossing the road through the wood and following the signs for Waterfoot Park (this will take approximately 10-15 minutes).

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

Waterfalls, walks, watersports, history and heritage are all here: start off with the miles of bridleways around Ullswater, all linked by Ullswater Steamer routes, and take the circular route around Maiden Castle which starts and ends at Waterfoot Caravan Park.

The site is surrounded by the Dalemain Estate which has five acres of gardens and swathes of historic parkland; the house and gardens themselves are less than two miles away (the cream teas are heartily recommended).

Another short walk will take you to the Bronze Age stone circles of Moor Divock at Pooley Bridge, a collection of stone circles edged by its biggest, The Cockpit at 25 metres wide, which still has standing stones of up to a metre high. It’s one of around 50 stone circles around Cumbria: Swinside, Castle Rigg and Long Meg and her Daughters are three of the biggest and most visited.

At least a day must be had on and around Ullswater, the Lake District’s second biggest lake, for a trip on Lady Dorothy or one of the other steamers; a spot of sailing, diving or boating, or a scale up Helvellyn, England’s third highest mountain and lying at Ullswater’s south (stagger to Glenridding village afterwards for refreshments).

At Ullswater’s west, Aira Force waterfall, tumbling down 65 feet, is a short drive from Waterfoot and reached by a crashingly good walk through woodland and glade.

Wildlife including red deer and those red squirrels can be spotted in many Lake District woodlands and fells, but to maximise your chances of a sighting, scurry along to the flagship red squirrel reserve at Whinlatter Forest near Keswick, where there’s also a red squirrel trail with a visitor centre and rope bridge.

Greystoke Forest and around Bassenthwaite Lake are other likely spotting areas, and like Whinlatter, have acres of other activities such as mountain biking and fell walking (start off at the Whinlatter visitor centre for ideas and tips).

Indoor options around the area include many museums, historic houses and oodles of towns and villages to shop around. Penrith is the nearest market town to Waterfoot and has an indoor pool, climbing wall, several specialist shops and a market twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
