Camp with views of ullswater

  • Spacious family park with spectacular views of Lake District fells
  • Penrith a 20-minute drive and Lake Ullswater within a 30-minute walk
  • Marina, licensed bar with TV and a games room, shop and playground
If you reckon a site with stunning views of the Cumbrian fells sounds like your kind of place, head over to family-friendly Ullswater Holiday Park. Sitting a half-hour walk from the shores of Ullswater (where guests can use Fair Field Marina or spend time canoeing, fishing and riding the famed Ullswater steamers), this option’s in a fab location for touring round the Lake District National Park. Kids can mess about in the half-acre playground at this well-equipped place, while adults have an ale at the licensed bar or a Farrer’s coffee in the café. Wifi is available (around the reception area and bar, not the whole site) and there's also a shop for essentials (including groceries and camping equipment) and a few supermarkets are 20 minutes’ drive away in the nearest town of Penrith. The capital of Cumbria in days of yore, this place has the 14th-century fortress to prove it... If loping from local village to local village seeing structures such as this sounds like an excellent option too, ride one of the Lake Ullswater steamers stopping at settlements such as Pooley Bridge and Glenridding along with the Aira Force falls. After you’ve set eyes on the whooshing water, other attractions nearby include those that combine architecture with lush landscapes – like Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens, 10 minutes away, and Lowther Castle & Gardens (20 minutes). There's also the Rheged Centre Cinema, a heritage hub in an old quarry with a grass roof, gallery and 3D screen (15 minutes away). Please note that the games room and bar may not be available in the low season (check in advance for opening hours).

Disliked Very disappointing stay – not a peaceful campsite

Before our arrival, the campsite repeatedly sent us emails with its rules, including that guests must not make excessive noise and that bookings are not allowed for groups, only families from the same household. Unfortunately, the rules seemed to exist only on paper.

During our stay, there were several large groups of people on the campsite, despite the rules clearly stating otherwise. It was also very noisy, with people drinking, laughing and talking loudly outside their tents until late at night. The campsite staff did not appear to enforce their own rules or take any action when they were being broken.

The biggest problem for us was the children’s playground. Children were screaming and shouting continuously from around 8am until 11pm. There was practically no moment of peace and quiet throughout the day. We came to a campsite to relax, and this simply wasn’t possible. Constant screaming from the playground, combined with loud conversations and laughter from adults drinking outside their tents late into the evening, made the stay extremely unpleasant.

We also saw someone flying a drone from their pitch over the campsite, which we found inappropriate and concerning, especially considering that there were many other guests around.

Unfortunately, we were so disappointed that my husband and I decided to leave one day earlier than planned because we simply didn’t want to spend another night listening to the constant screaming and noise.

The only positive aspects were the beautiful surrounding area, clean toilets and the fish and chips bar, which were all good.

Overall, this campsite could be a lovely place to stay, but the rules need to be properly enforced. If you advertise a campsite as having rules regarding noise and group bookings, you should also make sure those rules are actually respected. For us, it was definitely not the peaceful and relaxing camping experience we were expecting.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We're pleased you enjoyed the local area, our clean facilities, and the fish and chips.

We're sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. Our team carries out regular rounds after 10:30pm and responds to reports of excessive noise wherever possible to help ensure guests are abiding by our site rules.

While we do not accept bookings from organised groups, it is not uncommon for families and individual guests to make friends and socialise during their stay. As a family holiday park, particularly during the school holidays, the site is naturally busier and children will make use of facilities such as the playground throughout the day.

Camping is, by nature, a communal outdoor experience and, unlike other accommodation types, tents do not provide soundproofing, meaning everyday conversations and activity can often travel across the site.

We appreciate your comments regarding noise levels and drone use and will take them into consideration. Thank you again for sharing your experience, and we're sorry that we were unable to provide the peaceful break you were hoping for on this occasion.

Kind regards,
The Campsite Team

Would definitely go again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Kids loved the playground, fish from the chip shop was delicious! And I was very pleasantly surprised how spaced out everyone was, I was worried it’d be cramped in summer holidays.

Disliked My bad, pitched the tent too close to the playground which they don’t lock until 10pm… meant getting to sleep before then was a challenge because of the sounds of kids having fun

Liked This site is beautiful, we were in a fairly secluded part of the site, the sheep noise is beautiful to wake up to every morning, beautiful dog fields with a few agility games which our girl loved, a little over priced but thats down to your discression. Toilets are clean and tidy, we had 2 toilets and 1 shower cubicle where we werw, but a short walk to the biggers blocks. Sad to be leaving but would definately come back

Disliked Nothing from me, my daughter moaned about the Wifi( typical teenager) but we explained we were one of the furthest pitches from main office and peak times it is patchy, but 1st thing in morning and last thing at night is great, and does them good NOT to have it 😀

Local attractions

The Lake District doesn’t skimp on swish sights and attractions, and many of the best things to see and do in the national park – from bushcraft and watersports to golf and tennis – are within easy driving distance of the site. For classic Cumbrian walks Hallin Fell is a 20-minute drive away and the market town of Keswick, where you can go from perusing a pencil museum to dancing around the megalithic Castlerigg Stone Circle, is reachable in 25 minutes. A bit south of the town of Penrith (20 minutes) are the prehistoric Mayburgh Henge and Norman Brougham Castle. Other well-known Lake District settlements are also within easy reach along winding roads, like to Windermere (45 minutes away) and Ambleside (50 minutes). And if you fancy a crack at cantering instead of sitting in the car? Horse riding can be had from stables within a 15-minute drive, while guests who prefer roving on a revving vehicle can squat upon a quad bike and set off into the local lands (25 minutes from the park).
