General

  • Spacious family park with spectacular views of Lake District fells
  • Penrith a 20-minute drive and Lake Ullswater within a 30-minute walk
  • Marina, licensed bar with TV and a games room, shop and playground

If you reckon a site with its own lakeside harbour and views of the Cumbrian fells will float your boat, sail over to family-friendly Ullswater Holiday Park. Sitting a half an hour walk from Fair Field Marina and canoeing, fishing and rides on the famed Ullswater steamers this option’s in a fab location for touring round the Lake District National Park.

Kids can mess about in the half-acre playground at this well-equipped place, while adults have an ale at the licensed bar or a Farrer’s coffee in the café. There's also a shop for essentials (including groceries and camping equipment) and a few supermarkets are 20 minutes’ drive away in the nearest town of Penrith. The capital of Cumbria in days of yore, this place has the 14th-century fortress to prove it...

If loping from local village to local village seeing structures such as this sounds like an excellent option too, ride one of the Lake Ullswater steamers stopping at settlements such as Pooley Bridge and Glenridding along with the Aira Force falls.

After you’ve set eyes on the whooshing water, other attractions nearby include those that combine architecture with lush landscapes – like the Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens 10 minutes away and Lowther Castle & Gardens (20). There's also the Rheged Centre Cinema, a heritage hub in an old quarry with a grass roof, gallery and 3D screen (15 minutes away).

Lovely site with good facilities but remote09/03/2019

Good facilities on site. Small shop selling grocery essentials, cafe and a bar. Toilet and showering facilities were very good and cleaned twice a day. Nice, well equipped playground for kids. Loved the undercover eating area which came in very handy as it rained all weekend. Nice pubs with good food a 15 min drive away at Pooley Bridge.

    Disliked:

The on-site bar opening time was a bit late for young children (8pm) - would have preferred it to open earlier say 6pm. The local pub/brewery is very nice selling their own beers but be warned- your return journey is up a very steep hill. No attractions/walks to visit within reasonable walking distance and is a bit remote if you’re wanting to visit other Lake District attractions such as Windermere & Ambleside. It’s ok if you want to just pitch your tent and stay onsite for the duration but otherwise, be prepared to spend a lot of time in the car travelling from place to place. The fish and chip van visited Friday and Saturday evenings- good sized portions of chips but the fish was frozen supermarket style and not fresh fish.

Local attractions

The Lake District doesn’t skimp on swish sights and attractions, and many of the best things to see and do in this national park – from bushcraft and watersports to golf and tennis – are within easy driving distance of the site.

For classic Cumbrian walks Hallin Fell is a 20-minute drive away and the market town of Keswick, where you can go from perusing a pencil museum to dancing around the megalithic Castlerigg Stone Circle, is reachable in 25 minutes. A bit south of the town of Penrith (20 minutes) are the prehistoric Mayburgh Henge and Norman Brougham Castle.

Other well-known Lake District settlements are also within easy reach along winding roads, like to Windermere 45 minutes away and Ambleside (50 minutes).

And if you fancy a crack at cantering instead of sitting in the car? Horse riding can be had from stables within a 15-minute drive, while guests who prefer roving on a revving vehicle can squat upon a quad bike and set off into the local lands (25 minutes from the park).

Must see

  • Dalemain Historic House & Gardens (3.4 miles)
