Lowther Holiday Park: Lowther holiday park

General

  • Dog-friendly site on a private, wooded riverside in the Eden Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Ullswater and 15 minutes from Lowther Castle
  • Restaurant, bar and shop; fishing available in the river Lowther

Whether it’s an active or a lazy Lake District getaway you have in mind, Lowther Holiday Park will get the opening scenes rolling splendidly. What might these scenes look like? Well, when you’re not unwinding in the site’s 40-acre managed woodland in the Eden Valley or paddling in the river running through the site, you might be out boating on Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge 10 minutes’ drive away.

Have a gander at the medieval ruins of Lowther Castle & Gardens, which lie at the end of a quiet 40-minute woodland walk from the site. Then, recharge your batteries at one of the period pubs in Askham, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site.

Those of you who prefer a picnic lunch will be pleased to know that Lowther Holiday Park has a fully-stocked mini market, which also supplies essential camping equipment and gas. There’s a family-run restaurant and bar on site with outdoor entertainment in the summer and Sky Sports for those who can’t bear to miss a match day.

Down a mile-long, newly-laid and private tarmac drive lined with mature trees, this place really feels like a wildlife haven. The long Lowther river snakes through the site, so grab your rod and try fishing for salmon and trout or simply wade around and keep your eyes peeled for native red squirrels, wild rabbits and birds.

You wouldn’t guess that junction 40 on the M6 is just 10 minutes’ drive away. Access to the site is through the scenic village of Eamont Bridge.

wonderful place, helpful friendly staff. Everything was spotless and the washrooms were actually warm. So nice we stayed another night. Wonderful scenery

    Disliked:

Unfortunately the pub wasn't open the nights we stayed but it is out of season so wasn't surprised.

From the manager...

Lovely review, thank you Dennis! It was a pleasure to meet you and your partner, and we are so pleased you'll be heading back to Lowther Holiday Park very soon. There's nothing worse than a chilly toilet block - especially after a hot shower! Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

    Disliked:

Shower blocks located near permanent sites/caravans I assume most or all of them have their own facilities. Those in tents are furthest away
Dog friendly site but they are not allowed in the restaurant. If you bring your pal, you will be dining outside, regardless of the weather
Our pitch was half flat then on an incline

From the manager...

Hello there Alan - thanks for taking the time to leave us some excellent feedback, and so pleased you'll be visiting us again here at Lowther. We take a huge amount of pride and care in our facilities here on park. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant, you're correct, there were many more people wanting a dog free eating environment, so the manager had to go with the consensus. We do review this regularly though.

Wow, what beautiful pictures! Thank you or sharing these with us. We are so humbled by the surrounding at Lowther, every day it just takes your breath away.
Our team work so hard to make everyone's stay enjoyable and I'm pleased its made a difference to your stay. We'll take note about the shower block, thank you - the showers are normally hot enough to boil eggs and enough water to fill Ullswater - maybe we had a full run of muddy campers who used all the water!

Thank you for leaving us a review Alan, its wonderful you chose Lowther and we really appreciate you spending your leisure time visiting us. We are surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery and attractions. Sad to hear the shop and restaurant fell a little short of expectations, this is, as you mentioned due to hospitality staffing - something the team there are working incredibly hard on resolving.

From the manager...

Hello James! Thank you for leaving us a cracking review about Lowther Holiday Park. Plenty of great things there you have mentioned to help future campers! The shower buttons! Some do return quite quickly, some are a little slower. We try and make sure that we are as sustainable as possible - keeping water wastage to a minimum is paramount, bit we do take on your feedback, maybe the 8s is a little too short! The summer has been really quite busy - all our pitches are spaced sensibly, however we do appreciate that sometimes neighbours can stretch guy ropes and equipment far and wide - Our park manager will keep an eye on this. There's a few taxi companies from Penrith who do come to Lowther regularly however we don't often get Uber coverage as most visitors prefer to wander the footpaths and lanes surrounding us. Please pop in to the office next time you are here and we will give you some local taxi numbers to call - please note we don't own or run the taxi's though, so can't really be held responsible for unpredictable coverage.

Local attractions

Set an early alarm, because you’ll want plenty of time to explore the Lake District’s second-largest lake. There’s a 20-mile path around Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge (10 minutes’ drive). So, take it all in on foot, or opt for the boat hire and cruises if you’d like to cover as much ground (or rather, water) as possible in one go.

Haweswater Reservoir (half an hour) isn’t as busy as Ullswater, making it a great pick for more peaceful days out hiking. Penrith (10 minutes) will pick up the pace once again; there’s the popular Beacon Hill hike for those not done with the outdoorsy adventures and a museum and 14th-century castle for those interested in a slice of history.

As Lowther Holiday Park is so close to the A66 and the M6, it’s not so tricky to take a day trip to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (45 minutes), Hexham (an hour and 15 minutes) or Barnard Castle (an hour and five minutes) either.

Must see

  • The Rheged Centre (2.2 miles)
  • Dalemain Historic House & Gardens (3.3 miles)
  • Ullswater Steamers (10.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill (5.5 miles)
  • Townend (16.9 miles)
