  • Dog-friendly site on a private, wooded riverside in the Eden Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Ullswater and 15 minutes from Lowther Castle
  • On-site bar; fly fishing available in the river Lowther
Whether it’s an active or a lazy Lake District getaway you have in mind, Lowther Holiday Park will get the opening scenes rolling splendidly. What might these scenes look like? Well, when you’re not unwinding in the site’s 40-acre managed woodland in the Eden Valley or paddling in the river running through the site, you might be out boating on Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge 10 minutes’ drive away. Have a gander at the medieval ruins of Lowther Castle & Gardens, which lie at the end of a quiet 40-minute woodland walk from the site. Then, recharge your batteries at one of the period pubs in Askham, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site. There’s also a family-run bar on site with outdoor entertainment in the summer. Down a mile-long, newly-laid and private tarmac drive lined with mature trees, this place really feels like a wildlife haven. The long Lowther river snakes through the site, so wade around the shallows and keep your eyes peeled for native red squirrels, wild rabbits and birds. You wouldn’t guess that junction 40 on the M6 is just 10 minutes’ drive away. Access to the site is through the scenic village of Eamont Bridge.

What customers say

This spacious, scenic park offers lovely woodland and river walks, a hit with families. Visitors liked the friendly staff, spotless facilities (incl. baths), and the bakery. Some reviews note dated restrooms, spotty cleanliness, and noise. Touring spots can be tight/uneven, and Wi-Fi is unreliable. The pub no longer serves food.

Powered grass and gravel travel trailer campsite (super)

Liked Lovely site in gorgeous surroundings, toilets and showers were fairly modern and compared to other sites I’ve been to were very clean. Nice reasonably priced bar serving food, and the Guinness was well received as was the steak pie. Great little shop selling all the usual essentials at reasonable prices. Super friendly staff. Didn’t bother with the WiFi so can’t comment on it.

Powered grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Walking along the river on an evening was very peaceful. There’s also a walk out of the top of the site which goes up to Lowther castle which I’d recommend. Lots of statics on the site, everyone seemed very friendly.

Despite it being busy it was fairly quiet by 10.00 / 10.30pm.

The shop was excellent and all of the staff we met were friendly and helpful.

Even though the shower blocks are a bit dated they were usually very clean. There was plenty of hot water.

Disliked The touring pitches felt cramped, gaps between units weren’t well enforced. To be fair it was high season and the park was very busy. One neighbour with a camper pitched a pup tent (which to be fair the site doesn’t actually allow) so close we felt like they were in our van. The warden did try to catch them to ask them to take it down but then didn’t come back.

One of the shower blocks looks to have been recently updated, the other is in need of it. There were no mops in the block to clean up before or after a shower.

Liked I love the fact there is a bath in the shower blocks at lowther!

Disliked The pitches are very close together. A lot of cars just randomly parked on the grass and empty pitches.
I paid for WiFi- don’t do it, it didn’t connect most of the time.

Liked The surrounding river and walks, the games room for the kids, the park areas.
The toilet and shower facilities, while they arnt new and perfectly clean at all times they are nowhere near as bad as some reviews make out, they where definitely clean enough and fine to use throughout our whole trip.

Disliked The loud rowdy group of famies who played music till midnight shouting basically loudly partying on our first night, once they left it was lovely. We wouldnt of minded as much if it was expected but the strict no music and quiet policy we expected a quiet peaceful site. Very small tent pitches meant i felt like we where sharing a tent with four other families we could hear everything from their tents.

Liked The staff were lovely, very clean site, the bath in the shower block was an amazing idea my daughter loved it.

Disliked The tent area is on a slope it made things tricky everything slide off tables and the site was very noisy not even kids it was adults screaming and shouting till gone midnight some nights. I understand it’s holiday but be maybe a couple of checks on the camp area at night to check everyone is being respectful.

Liked Quiet site from traffic, lovely setting in the trees and woodlands. Beautiful little river running by the side of the site. Nice pub with good food and friendly staff.

Disliked Toilets and shower blocks need cleaning and updating. Broken toilet seats and graffiti all over the toilet doors. Standard of cleanliness not brilliant but acceptable

Local attractions

Set an early alarm, because you’ll want plenty of time to explore the Lake District’s second-largest lake. There’s a 20-mile path around Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge (10 minutes’ drive). So, take it all in on foot, or opt for the boat hire and cruises if you’d like to cover as much ground (or rather, water) as possible in one go. Haweswater Reservoir (half an hour) isn’t as busy as Ullswater, making it a great pick for more peaceful days out hiking. Penrith (10 minutes) will pick up the pace once again; there’s the popular Beacon Hill hike for those not done with the outdoorsy adventures and a museum and 14th-century castle for those interested in a slice of history. As Lowther Holiday Park is so close to the A66 and the M6, it’s not so tricky to take a day trip to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (45 minutes), Hexham (an hour and 15 minutes) or Barnard Castle (an hour and five minutes) either.
