  • Dog-friendly site on a private, wooded riverside in the Eden Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Ullswater and 15 minutes from Lowther Castle
  • Bar and shop; fly fishing available in the river Lowther
Whether it’s an active or a lazy Lake District getaway you have in mind, Lowther Holiday Park will get the opening scenes rolling splendidly. What might these scenes look like? Well, when you’re not unwinding in the site’s 40-acre managed woodland in the Eden Valley or paddling in the river running through the site, you might be out boating on Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge 10 minutes’ drive away. Have a gander at the medieval ruins of Lowther Castle & Gardens, which lie at the end of a quiet 40-minute woodland walk from the site. Then, recharge your batteries at one of the period pubs in Askham, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site. Those of you who prefer a picnic lunch will be pleased to know that Lowther Holiday Park has a fully-stocked mini market, which also supplies essential camping equipment and gas. There’s a family-run bar on site with outdoor entertainment in the summer and Sky Sports for those who can’t bear to miss a match day. Down a mile-long, newly-laid and private tarmac drive lined with mature trees, this place really feels like a wildlife haven. The long Lowther river snakes through the site, so wade around the shallows and keep your eyes peeled for native red squirrels, wild rabbits and birds. You wouldn’t guess that junction 40 on the M6 is just 10 minutes’ drive away. Access to the site is through the scenic village of Eamont Bridge.

Liked Campsite was really pretty, excellent location.

Disliked Toilet block was really far away from where we were, we seem to be put really randomly over the other side of the park also the pictches were quite uneven. They also didn’t look very well maintained. The washing up area wasn’t kept at all either.

Liked Location ,pub ,food albeit limited !

Disliked Lack of attention to detail! This place could be amazing given the location
However there is no care and attention especially maintaining pitches, I booked a premium hard standing pitch wich turned out to be very uneven and covered in grass , no maintenance was carried out to any pitch in the 3 days we were there , it seems to be an after thought from the site owners poorly managed in my opinion, from this site we moved to Park foot holiday park which puts Lowther to shame ! If you are going to do something put the effort in or just don't bother!

Liked The facilities and site were super clean and very well managed. The prices in the on site cafe/takeaway or more than reasonable and they even have gluten free options as they have experience with coeliac which really benefited us. The site is very wheelchair friendly with excellent disabled toilet and shower blocks. The staff were so welcoming and helpful, very child friendly. Plenty of space on site and playbacks for the kids. Felt very safe and the children were able to do their own thing very safely. There are several walks from the site didn't have time to explore these due to the short time we were there, had a great time paddling in the river whilst there too and staff were able to advise best route to the part of the river for paddling as there are 2 points and points for swimming in it too. Will definitely be going again just longer next time

Disliked Being very picky the mashed potato was instant mash which was a little disappointing but the pastry on the pie was divinr

Liked Fantastic Camping Experience at Lowther Holiday Park

We had a brilliant stay at Lowther Holiday Park and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a well-equipped and peaceful camping getaway. I stayed on an electric tent pitch, which was ideal - having access to electricity made the experience so much more comfortable.

The facilities on-site were excellent. The toilets, showers, and dishwashing area were all spotless and very well maintained throughout my stay.

A big bonus was the local pub right on the premises. It was so convenient to have a nice place to relax and grab a drink without having to leave the park. The reception staff were also incredibly helpful and friendly, always happy to assist with any questions or needs.

Another big plus was the location – it’s perfectly situated for exploring the Lake District and nearby attractions. Lowther Castle is just a short walk away, and Penrith is also close by, offering shops, cafés, and other amenities if you need anything during your stay.

Overall, it was a really enjoyable and hassle-free camping trip. The combination of great facilities, friendly service, and a beautiful setting made it a perfect break.

Disliked There was absolutely nothing to dislike - it’s a stunning place.

Liked Location is good, just off the M6 so easy to get to. Very clean although the gents loos were closed ‘due to unforeseen circumstances’. Very large site and lovely walks.

Disliked We could not get into the site until early afternoon and were only staying one night. We had no time to visit anywhere before closing times. The site is very cramped, loads of lodges very close together and pitches for motorhomes were not very wide. We could not get out our awning to shelter from the rain as there was not enough room.

Local attractions

Set an early alarm, because you’ll want plenty of time to explore the Lake District’s second-largest lake. There’s a 20-mile path around Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge (10 minutes’ drive). So, take it all in on foot, or opt for the boat hire and cruises if you’d like to cover as much ground (or rather, water) as possible in one go. Haweswater Reservoir (half an hour) isn’t as busy as Ullswater, making it a great pick for more peaceful days out hiking. Penrith (10 minutes) will pick up the pace once again; there’s the popular Beacon Hill hike for those not done with the outdoorsy adventures and a museum and 14th-century castle for those interested in a slice of history. As Lowther Holiday Park is so close to the A66 and the M6, it’s not so tricky to take a day trip to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (45 minutes), Hexham (an hour and 15 minutes) or Barnard Castle (an hour and five minutes) either.
