Lowther Holiday Park: Camping pod in the trees

General

  • Dog-friendly site on a private, wooded riverside in the Eden Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Ullswater and 15 minutes from Lowther Castle
  • Restaurant, bar and shop; fishing available in the river Lowther

Whether it’s an active or a lazy Lake District getaway you have in mind, Lowther Holiday Park will get the opening scenes rolling splendidly. What might these scenes look like? Well, when you’re not unwinding in the site’s 40-acre managed woodland in the Eden Valley or paddling in the river running through the site, you might be out boating on Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge 10 minutes’ drive away.

Have a gander at the medieval ruins of Lowther Castle & Gardens, which lie at the end of a quiet 40-minute woodland walk from the site. Then, recharge your batteries at one of the period pubs in Askham, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site.

Those of you who prefer a picnic lunch will be pleased to know that Lowther Holiday Park has a fully-stocked mini market, which also supplies essential camping equipment and gas. There’s a family-run restaurant and bar on site with outdoor entertainment in the summer and Sky Sports for those who can’t bear to miss a match day.

Down a mile-long, newly-laid and private tarmac drive lined with mature trees, this place really feels like a wildlife haven. The long Lowther river snakes through the site, so grab your rod and try fishing for salmon and trout or simply wade around and keep your eyes peeled for native red squirrels, wild rabbits and birds.

You wouldn’t guess that junction 40 on the M6 is just 10 minutes’ drive away. Access to the site is through the scenic village of Eamont Bridge.

From the manager...

Hello Mandi! What a lovely review, thank you. The Lowther team do work really hard to keep the site and facilities in tip top condition, and we are so proud of what we have here. The pods are little crackers, and this time of year look so picturesque. The park is a little quieter this time of year, but gives you plenty of quiet and relaxing time, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Toilets weren’t cleaned for the entirety of our stay (3 nights).
Shop and pub/restaurant opening hours weren’t great.

From the manager...

We do try really hard to make sure all the pitches are suitable at all times for our passing friends, and the team we have on site work really hard to make sure the park and facilities are always in tip top condition, clean and operational. I'm really sorry you felt the facilities weren't checked or cleaned properly - the toilets do get cleaned and checked regularly throughout the day and early evening, and the dedicated and passionate services team always take great pride in ensuring they sparkle - I can only presume that due to how busy the park was, we had a constant flow of muddy campers in and out and that's left the untidiness. I'm glad to see this hasn't put you off and you'll be back soon to Lowther, thank you.

The weather 😂 but that can’t be helped unfortunately. Still plenty of places to explore in the rain

From the manager...

Oh dear, the October rain in the Lakes can feel like its relentless, but you're right - there is soooo much to do while you're here visiting Lowther. The forests are all pretty much spruce and fir, so offer really good protection from the worst of the weather! We are close to a number of market towns, so you can always find plenty to do if the adventure walks get too much for you. So pleased you enjoyed your stay and gave us a 10, despite the rain! Thank you.

Hello there Alison, and thank you for choosing to stay with us here at Lowther. We are really proud of our grass camping area, its lovely and quiet, and big enough to accommodate large tents without feeling like your close camping with your neighbours! We do hope you decide to return to Lowther and enjoy our paddling river and surrounding walks again.

We’ve visited Lowther before and have always been impressed with the facilities. The pod is located right next to the play park, which the children were delighted by. The toilet and shower block was just a short walk and I must admit I liked that the heater was on as soon as you walked in. The facilities were always clean.
We even enjoyed a nice drink in the evening at the pub on-site. The pod is spacious, with enough room to sleep two double beds and have a little extra space to move and store bags. We definitely utilised the heater in the evening and next time will bring a kettle. We’re already planning to return early next year.

From the manager...

Oh wow! 10/10 - that's amazing, thank you Louise. The pods really are ideal for small families and those that want a little more than a tent. The team take great pride in how they are presented, and we are so pleased it enhanced your stay with us. We can't wait to see you back again here at Lowther in the Spring!

Local attractions

Set an early alarm, because you’ll want plenty of time to explore the Lake District’s second-largest lake. There’s a 20-mile path around Ullswater, which is accessible from Pooley Bridge (10 minutes’ drive). So, take it all in on foot, or opt for the boat hire and cruises if you’d like to cover as much ground (or rather, water) as possible in one go.

Haweswater Reservoir (half an hour) isn’t as busy as Ullswater, making it a great pick for more peaceful days out hiking. Penrith (10 minutes) will pick up the pace once again; there’s the popular Beacon Hill hike for those not done with the outdoorsy adventures and a museum and 14th-century castle for those interested in a slice of history.

As Lowther Holiday Park is so close to the A66 and the M6, it’s not so tricky to take a day trip to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (45 minutes), Hexham (an hour and 15 minutes) or Barnard Castle (an hour and five minutes) either.

Must see

  • The Rheged Centre (3.5 kilometres)
  • Dalemain Historic House & Gardens (5.3 kilometres)
  • Ullswater Steamers (16.7 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill (8.9 kilometres)
