  • Peaceful touring site on a farm in Cumbria's Eden Valley
  • A 20-minute drive from Penrith and with easy access to the M6
  • Between the Lake District National Park and North Pennines
It’s cleverly named, Cumbria’s Eden Valley – in a special spot just between the Lake District National Park to the west and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the east. It’s got mountains and moors to ramble on, and easy access to the M6 too (which, while not necessarily boosting the scenery factor, does make life much easier for getting in and out). Equally well named is Eden Valley Holidays, a peaceful site surrounded by greenery around 20 minutes’ drive from Penrith. And in an extra bonus for this particular location, it’s known to be a rain shadow area – so it’s notably less damp than some of its neighbours. Sound like quite the place for a peaceful break? Quite right. There’s no great stack of facilities to get in the way of the quiet rural vibe, but all the essentials are in place: site-wide free wifi, a chemical toilet disposal point and a wash house with toilets and free gas-powered hot showers (most welcome after days of outdoorsy antics nearby). Dogs are welcome to join you on your jaunt, but they’ll need to be well behaved and promise not to harass any farm animals. The folk that run the place are experienced caravanners themselves, so they’re well aware of the little touches that can boost a break – that means they’re the kind of people that don’t just mow the grass on site but also gather it up and cart it off so it doesn’t get trampled into your flooring. Sometimes, it’s all about those little things, eh…

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: We arrived late but Jenny was happy to greet us and show us to our pitch. We had a choice of 2 conveniently placed hard standing pitches and with only one or two other units on site, basically had access to a full (spotlessly clean) bathroom each!

Disliked: Nothing much.

Local attractions

More bonus points for the location when you’re looking at where to spend your days out, especially if you’re up for a hike/bike ride or few. Days upon end can be spent gadding about in the Lake District National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – gorgeous spots like Ullswater and Cross Fell are within half an hour’s drive, with Ambleside, Windermere and Keswick not far beyond. Giving your legs a rest for a bit? Try a visit to the elaborate château-esque Bowes Museum, which has quite the collection of treasures to peruse, or head for the art, natural history and interactive exhibits of Tullie House Museum in Carlisle (both 45 minutes’ drive). More steps into the area’s heritage might include a trip to the giant 3D cinema at Rheged Visitor Centre (20 minutes), or a bit of Roman roaming at Hadrian’s Wall (an hour). Or of course, you could sort yourselves a ride on the Settle-Carlisle Railway (45 minutes) for a comfy way to take in scenery and history all in one.
