Social District: Campsite with the sun going down

General

  • Dog-friendly Lake District site on the shore of Lake Windermere
  • Under a five-minute drive from activity centres and a ferry stop
  • Fishing on site; campfires and barbecues permitted

From paddleboarding, kayaking or hiring a boat for Lake Windermere’s light waves to tucking into some tasty food from a café in one of the lakeside villages around the National Park… when you set up camp on the banks of Lake Windermere at Social District, there is much to do on the lake and its shores, as this site is under five minutes’ drive away from two activity centres running pursuits such as watersports, laser tag and abseiling.

A 15-minute walk away from the nearest Windermere ferry stop, it’s even simpler to stop off at the attractions around the lake, such as a jetty museum, castle and Windermere village’s characterful parks, shops and restaurants.

As the site backs onto the lake, fishing can be done from the site. It's also directly opposite an old bobbin mill, now an English heritage museum, and 10 minutes’ drive away from the National Trust site at the Hill Top for a trip into the life of Beatrix Potter.

Don’t worry about leaving the dog behind, as furry members of the family welcome on site too. There are basic facilities around the site including a portaloo, as it's all about getting back to nature.

Gather up some tasty local produce from a farm shop five minutes’ drive away and don’t forget to grab some meat for the grill, as both barbecues and campfires are permitted back on site. And when you feel like a drink or a meal out, there are several places to eat within 10 minutes’ drive of the site too.

Great pitches, amazing views and lots of space!

    Disliked:

Only downside was the toilets. Standard portaloos they were clean units but visitors didn’t use them properly and they were obviously not checked by staff regularly. Meaning in the morning they were all full

Great location, right on the lake. The kids had great fun swimming and playing in the dingy.

Plenty of space between the tents and a relaxed atmosphere

    We will happily visit again.

    Disliked:

Definitely needs a toilet block building and a couple more water points around site.

The road could do with a little levelling out too

None of the above will spoil your visit

Location to lake was excellent right next to the pitches would suit anyone interested in water sports or perhaps just to chill by the water.

Pitches were far away from all roads so any traffic noise was non existent which made for a peaceful environment.

    Disliked:

The entrance to the site was very difficult to spot and had to ask a neighbouring business for the location so do keep this in mind.

The lack of facilities is a problem, the only toilets are portaloos which after one night of a fairly busy campsite were less than desirable to use.

If investment is possible it would make a huge difference to have a shower/toilet block with washing up facilities.

There's a lot of potential to make this a great campsite it just needs some finishing touches.

From the manager...

We really appreciate this feedback. Our primary focus will be to have shower/toilet blocks when we are back open next year. We hope to see you again and hope that you did have a lovely time!

Another National Trust site, Fell Foot Park (five minutes) has a relaxed circular walk around gothic boathouses, pine trees and gardens.

Head south towards Ulverston (15 minutes), where there’s the canal and South Lakes Safari Zoo (25 minutes). And to the east of the site, Kendal (half an hour) is another splendid Lake District village, nearby the grand Sizergh Castle (20 minutes).
