  • Dog-friendly Lake District site on the shore of Lake Windermere
  • Less than five minutes' drive from activity centres and a ferry stop
  • Dog park and fishing on site; campfires and barbecues permitted
From paddleboarding, kayaking or hiring a boat for Lake Windermere’s light waves to tucking into some tasty food from a café in one of the lakeside villages around the Lake District National Park… when you set up camp on the banks of Lake Windermere at Social District, there is much to do on the lake and its shores. This site is under five minutes’ drive away from two activity centres running pursuits such as watersports, laser tag and abseiling. Being a 15-minute walk away from the nearest Windermere ferry stop makes it even simpler to stop off at the attractions around the lake, such as a jetty museum, castle and Windermere village’s characterful parks, shops and restaurants. As the site backs onto the lake, fishing can be done from the site. It's also directly opposite an old bobbin mill, now an English Heritage museum, and 10 minutes’ drive away from the National Trust site at the Hill Top for a trip into the life of Beatrix Potter. Don’t worry about leaving the dog behind, as furry members of the family welcome on site too. It's all about getting back to nature here, so basic facilities are around the site – including a portable toilet. A farm shop five minutes’ drive away is the place for picnic supplies or to grab some meat for the grill (both barbecues and campfires are permitted back on site). And when you feel like a drink or a meal out, there are several places to eat within 10 minutes’ drive, too.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The access to the lake and the laid back atmosphere. Showers and toilets were clean and attended to regularly. Other campers were all friendly and being able to let the dog run free with theirs was wonderful. Loved having bbq or campfires at night after gathering own firewood. Everyone was very respectful of the site and each other.

Disliked: The shower heads don’t fit into the holders so you have to hold it up whilst showering. They do not sell firewood. Certain areas of the site were boggy due to rain and some cars needed a push to help them get out. Was overpriced for what you actually get. There is no signage saying ‘social district’ at all. Which did not help us find the place easily.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Stunning view of the lake. Toilet and shower area were clean and toilet rolls were frequently filled. Plenty space to pitch a tent. Was very quiet. Great fishing spot too although we weren’t very lucky! Only stayed the one night however wished we booked another night or two. We got lost on the way as route had changed due to weather however Tom (site staff) was very helpful and kept communicating advising us where to go!

Disliked: The rain, however that can’t be helped! Hand soap wasn’t available at the toilet area so bring your own!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: View was excellent

Disliked: Pricey for what it was. You're literally paying for the location. Toilet block was a converted trailer that was an inch deep in water till our last day. Tents were left on the pitch for days after being abandoned by groups that had broken them. The noise curfew was ignored completely till the early hours of the morning. Nowhere to wash plates etc, and worst of all dog faeces in the one water point on site. I get its supposed to more like wild camping, but the site didn't look like it had any daily checks to keep it clean.

Local attractions

Grapple with the Go Ape course in Grizedale Forest (15 minutes’ drive) or stick to the walking, cycling or mountain biking the tracks down below. There are sculptures all around and the chance to walk with fell ponies through the forest too. As you can expect, there's no shortage of activity centres nearby – Woodland Xperiences (two minutes) is one such place, running outdoor adventures such as canoeing, rewilding and climbing. If you've brought the kids, or fancy heading back into your own childhood, meet favourite characters at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (20 minutes). Wray Castle (25 minutes), a National Trust site, is also a bit like something from a storybook with impressive turrets and towers looking out over the lake. Another National Trust site, Fell Foot Park (five minutes) has a relaxed circular walk around gothic boathouses, pine trees and gardens. Head south towards Ulverston (15 minutes), where there’s the canal and South Lakes Safari Zoo (25 minutes). And to the east of the site, Kendal (half an hour) is another splendid Lake District town, near the grand Sizergh Castle (20 minutes).
