If your dream campsite comes with views over Windermere in the Lake District National Park, Lake Windermere Camping deserves a place on your list of potential hideaways. This pop-up site is short on facilities (it has portable toilets but no showers) but long on glorious views across the lake to the wild fells beyond. Set on farmland on the outskirts of Bowness-on-Windermere, the camping field offers a peaceful, uncrowded wild camping vibe with generous pitching spaces – some of the pitches are sloping but these are at the top of the meadow so have the best views – so you can relax in relative privacy and soak up the surrounding landscapes. You can pick up pretty much everything you need by way of provisions in Bowness-on-Windermere (five minutes’ drive or 15 minutes’ walk), from groceries to walking and cycling gear. This cute-as-pie lakeside town also has a wide range of eateries, from cafés to bistros and pubs, and you can board a ferry on the waterfront that takes you to Far Sawrey on the quiet western shore of the lake in 10 minutes.

Liked Not much. Closeness to the lake, restaurants etc I guess (but you wouldn't want to go to restaurants if you couldn't shower)

Disliked Expensive for pitching a tent in a field with only portaloos (that smelt) and a tap for amenities, next to a road with vehicle noise AND with a building site behind it (with pile driving before it was even 7.30am). If it seemed close to wild camping or had an amazing view from the tent, I might have forgiven the rest but being next to a road and surrounded by houses with the view from an area that sloped too much for tents, nah!
Oh, and my car got stuck in the mud and fellow campers had to push it out for me, bless them.

Liked Lovely quiet site, great views and easy to walk down to the town and nearby scenic walks. Very basic. Friendly lady servicing toilets offered to let us have one of the permeant tents there for £35 when we told her our tent was leaking badly.

Disliked No sign to show is we were at the right place. Luckily the permanent tents were there so we did have an idea that it was something other than a field.

A 15-minute walk from the pitches takes you to Brant Fell for spectacular views over Windermere to fells and forested valleys. You can stroll up to Orrest Head (45 minutes on foot) in the footsteps of Alfred Wainwright for views down the entirety of the lake and across to Scafell Pike and Coniston Old Man. Cyclists can take the ferry to the quieter lanes on the western shores of Windermere; first stop might be the National Trust-run Claife Viewing Station with stained glass framing its viewing platform, which has vistas of boats bobbing on the water. The energetic among you may care to follow the steep mountain-biking track up to Claife Heights – you’ll be rewarded with panoramas stretching to Troutbeck and Coniston fells on the horizon. If you have kids with you, then The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (five minutes’ drive) should be on your agenda for its dioramas of much-loved characters like Peter Rabbit and Mr Jeremy Fisher. Learn more about local life at the interactive Windermere Jetty Museum (five minutes), where you can take trips around the lake in a restored traditional wooden boat and see steam launches being repaired by expert craftspeople.
