General

  • Family-friendly site and activity centre on the outskirts of Doncaster
  • Easy links to the national motorway network
  • Ten-minute walks to the local town of Hatfield

South Yorkshire activity seekers: sorted. Hatfield Outdoor Activity Centre and Campsite on the outskirts of Doncaster has quite the heap of active options on site – and is in an area with plenty more in the surrounds, from golf to hiking to hurtling around indoors at the Doncaster Dome.

The active options on site are land and water based, and include courses, group sessions, team building, parties, canoeing and outdoor swimming. Or you could just use the site as a base to potter around Doncaster and South Yorkshire, or as an overnight stopover easy to access because of its nifty links to the national motorway network.

Hatfield is family friendly, with facilities including a toilet and shower block, a chemical disposal point, a washing-up area and a deep sink for clothes washing. A play area and vending machines are also on site.

It's a 10-minute walk to the old town of Hatfield, where supplies can be picked up at the local newsagent, post office, mini-market and off-licence and bakery; there are also restaurants and pubs for tiffin and teas.

Responsible dog owners are welcome at the site.

There are a couple of parks onsite for the kids and the canoeing you can do is great and reasonably priced. As the campsite isn't right out 'in the sticks' it's really easy to pop to the shop or go off site to do things which we found handy as we were with 3 kids under 10. Staff in reception and at the watersports are all really friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

Although the tent pitches themselves are large, you are close to other campers, definitely the closest campsite I've been to. Definitely a family campsite, I wouldn't choose to camp here as a couple. Toilet/shower block wasn't the best but there were toilets and there were showers, if you are expecting swish facilities this isn't the place for you, if you are happy to get back to basics and you aren't too bothered about a posh shower this place is great, cheap and cheerful!

The setting was very nice, under trees and very green. Plots clearly set out and numbered. I liked the information sent detailing guidelines for using the camp. The late entry system worked well, and check out was simple.

    Disliked:

The camp guidelines emailed through said for there to be no noise after 11. Unfortunately a group of adults opposite me were up drinking and talking until midnight, and kept me awake (I used earplugs but they were too loud) until they'd gone to bed (I'd wanted to be asleep by 10). Then the tent next to me had 2 dogs who started barking at 6am, so the first night's sleep was shot. Maybe you have to expect that kind of thing at these camps but it's not what I want so I probably wouldn't stay somewhere like this again.
The next night they stayed up again but the rain on the tent deadened the noise a bit so it was easier to sleep.
The toilet block was pretty grotty, and only 2 men's showers for the whole place. All 3 of the sink soap dispensers ran out of soap by Sunday morning. The water dispenser for our area was a dirty length if hosepipe and no sign indicating if it was OK to use as drinking water. No-one I asked knew either so I just boiled it all in case.
The site is just across from the M18 so there's a constant background hum of traffic when it's quiet at night.
As I say, most people probably wouldn't be bothered by this, and it's my first time using a campsite like this so it's clearly just not for me. Plenty of positive reviews mean others clearly enjoy the place a lot.
