South Yorkshire activity seekers: sorted. Hatfield Outdoor Activity Centre and Campsite on the outskirts of Doncaster has quite the heap of active options on site – and is in an area with plenty more in the surrounds, from golf to hiking to hurtling around indoors at the Doncaster Dome. The active options on site are land- and water-based, and vary depending on the time of year; they might include courses, group sessions, team building, parties, canoeing and outdoor swimming. Or you could just use the site as a base to potter around Doncaster and South Yorkshire, or as an overnight stopover easy to access because of its nifty links to the national motorway network. A play area and vending machines are also on site. Electric grass pitch

Liked Good sized pitches, the fact u can have camp fires and barbecues is good, showers and toilets are a good size, waterpark on site is great, inflatables great fun. We also did paddleboarding which was good too

Disliked Club house meant to be open till 930, we went over just after 730 for food and drink but shutters were down and they had closed early as was quiet,so staff were elsewhere cleaning etc. If club has opening times need to stick to them as guests work there schedules around it. Had to go offsite for food and drink in the end
The insects -so many flies! Bring bug spray

Electric grass pitch

Liked Big walking field near by the campsite perfect for dog walking and taking kids to a play park and skate park. The lake activities are fun and that's why we stayed there. Pitch was a very good size too.

Disliked The general site and toilets could be cleaned more regularly. Upon check-in I was told I had to mop the floors which are a cubicle comprising sink, toilet and shower all in one with no window to open for the steam to escape.
The bins were all overflowing which was poor in a busy bank holiday weekend.
The discount code for the water park wasn't shared ahead of coming so ended up missing out in money off which was disappointing.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The children enjoyed the aqua park

Disliked Unfortunately, our experience at this campsite was disappointing. The site appeared to be significantly overcrowded, which led to excessive noise and disruption throughout the evening.

Large groups of unsupervised children were shouting, swearing, spitting on each other, and running behind occupied tents late into the night. At one point children were tripping over tent guide wires and falling into our tent area, which created genuine safety concerns as well as disturbance.

Although the campsite had an 11pm noise curfew, this was not properly enforced. We did not see security until around 11pm, and when they did appear they were only asking people to put out fires rather than addressing the anti-social behaviour taking place around the site.

We understand campsites can be busy, especially during warmer weather, but there still needs to be reasonable management of noise, safety, and behaviour so that other guests can enjoy their stay. Unfortunately, this experience fell far below what we expected from a family campsite and we left our stay early

Electric grass pitch

Liked Spacious pitch, lovely setting, friendly staff.

Disliked Don’t understand the pitch policy of having to pay extra for a gazebo. We had a small campervan and a gazebo which cost us more than a pitch with a caravan, awning and car on it. Pitch therefore ended up costing us 172.00 for 3 night for 2 adults, a child and a dog. Sadly for this reason we wouldn’t return.

Local attractions

Doncaster town centre with its market is a 20-minute drive away, or you could get one of the buses running regularly to there from the Hatfield high street. If you're at Hatfield Outdoor Activity Centre and Campsite to be an active sort, head to the 25-metre pool, sports hall and gym of Thorne Leisure Centre 10 minutes away, to the golf course half an hour's drive away, or to the 50 or so indoor and energetic activities of Doncaster Dome. Other good options in the area are the Yorkshire Wildlife Park (20 minutes), Doncaster Racecourse (20 minutes), Pennine hikes to the county's west, a day out in Scunthorpe (half an hour), or a wander around Yorkshire's many historic houses, like the halls of Normanby, Doddington and Brodsworth. Cusworth Hall Museum (half an hour's drive) is a good spot for some history combined with outdoor time. The Grade I-listed building is set in acres of historic parkland, including a gorgeous RHS walled garden. Another big plus: the hall's original brewery has been turned into a microbrewery and bar that serves beer brewed in the hall. Feel like some nature-spotting? Good options include the Humberhead Peatlands NNR (10 minutes), home to over 5,000 species of plants and animals, and the YWT Potteric Carr Nature Reserve (20 minutes), with flocks of bitterns among other wading birds.
