  • Quiet south Northumberland site with views over the Tyne Valley
  • A mile from the village of Acomb; Hexham 10 minutes' drive
  • Campfires and barbecues welcome; dinner or cooked breakfast hampers
Sunniside House in southern Northumberland is a quiet campsite a mile from the small village of Acomb. There are excellent views to admire here from nearly every angle, with far-reaching vistas over the surrounding Tyne Valley and out to the Pennine peaks beyond. This rural site has a small number of pitches to ensure everyone has sufficient breathing space, along with facilities including a shower, toilets, a washing-up area and a shared fridge. This simple spot is a couple of minutes' walk from The Mariners and a mile away from The Miners Arms, another popular local pub, but food and drink can be sorted on site too if you opt for one of Sunniside House's dinner or breakfast hampers (speak to site staff for details). After sorting your own dinner, you may also be able to help the farmers feed the lambs. Once you've sampled some local produce and settled in for your stay, you might like to walk the two miles out to Hadrian's Wall for rambles along the old Roman frontier. It's also a couple of miles from the heaps of heritage on display at St. Oswald's in Lee Church and the site of the Battle of Heavenfield. Campfires and barbecues are welcome, but they are only allowed in designated areas. Packs of kiln-dried wood, kindling and firelighters are available to buy on site. Please do not bring your own fuel.

Valley View non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The hosts were lovely and helpful, the campsite was small and peaceful and a great environment with beautiful scenery. There’s a few small pubs a short walk away but not much else as it’s a small town and such a secluded calm area. The shower and facilities were clean and worked perfectly. We had a lovely time!

Valley View non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely very low-key campsite in a scenic spot. Our hosts were very friendly. We received an enthusiastic greeting and advice about local things to do and spots to eat. It's a short walk into the village where we got dinner and had a few drinks at The Sun Inn

Disliked: It's windy.

Valley View non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Really nice campsite on top of the hill. Beautiful views and really comfortable place to stay with showers, toilets and a fridge / freezer which was a bonus. The woods nearby is a beautiful walk so i would highly recommend. The owners are really friendly and accomodating

Disliked: You can't use your own wood or firepit. This is advertised so not a complaint and didn't affect my stay. And they supply everything you need to have a fire. Just a personal preference of mine to use my own stuff.

Arena View non-electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Location and amazing views

Disliked: Only one unisex shower and WC for the site which is not sufficient. Expensive given the lack of facilities.

From the manager: Hi John. We’re so glad you love the location and amazing views. I’m so sorry you didn’t see the other facilities- we also have a large shower and a third loo we open at busy times

Valley View non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly welcome; everything we needed and nothing we didn't.

Disliked: We were lucky to find the site - a What3Words location or OS grid reference would have been useful (Google Maps' rather featureless maps aren't the best). There had been a lot of rain to be fair, but lots of the grass was very squelchy.
