General

  • Quiet south Northumberland site with views over the Tyne Valley
  • A mile from the village of Acomb; Hexham 10 minutes' drive
  • Campfires and barbecues welcome; dinner or cooked breakfast hampers

Sunniside House in southern Northumberland is a quiet campsite a mile from the small village of Acomb. There are excellent views to admire here from nearly every angle, with far-reaching vistas over the surrounding Tyne Valley and out to the Pennine peaks beyond.

This rural site has a small number of pitches to ensure everyone has sufficient breathing space, along with facilities including a shower, toilets, a washing-up area and a shared fridge. This simple spot is a mile away from The Miners Arms, a popular local pub, but food and drink can be sorted on site too if you opt for one of Sunniside House's dinner or breakfast hampers (speak to site staff for details). After sorting your own dinner, you may also be able to help the farmers feed the lambs.

Once you've sampled some local produce and settled in for your stay, you might like to walk the two miles out to Hadrian's Wall for rambles along the old Roman frontier. It's also a couple of miles from the heaps of heritage on display at St. Oswald's in Lee Church and the site of the Battle of Heavenfield.

    Friendly Greeting. Community fridge.

    Disliked:

These are suggestions rather than dislikes. The owners are trying to establish themselves near to a busy caravan site nearby which must be awkward. Recently refurbished single toilet and single shower room. Might be a tad busy with more people at the site.
Grass on the pitches was a bit long in places which was more pronounced with the wet weather. The washing up area could do with a weather cover and hot water.

Parking isn’t great, wasps, cut the grass

From the manager...

Lovely to have you back again Charlie for a second stay this summer - I apologies about the wasps but nature has them looking for food at this time of year.
The grass this is definitely something we are planning to address if we open next year again. (Although we have had some lovely comments of the great extra cushioning for bed time-)
As for the parking we also have plans for next season.
Thank you again for your constructive comments and we look forward to your returning again soon. X

This was our first time camping and what a fab little site we choose. With toilet, shower and washing up facilities it was perfect. Such a quiet spot to relax and catch up. The owner of the site is a really lovely, friendly lady with her dog 'smelly nelly', she comes around and chats to everyone which I feel is very welcoming.

Beautiful views and lovely location, you can tell the shower and toilets have just been built very clean and tidy. The pub down the road was lovely, very homely. And the lady behind the bar was friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

Not being able to take your own fire pit/ BBQ . And you can't use your own wood. Beautiful site but too many retrictions. The owner was a little condescending.

From the manager...

The rules stated in Pitchup booking - terms and conditions- site rules - Only fuel purchased on site may be burnt/used-
I am sorry you misunderstood the statement.

We do However offer FirePit Grills- and wood these can be used as described to BBQ on or just as a safe open fire-
This intern helps to stop the grass being marked by numerous small BBQs keeping the site as you describe a ‘lovely location’.

The quiet location with spectacular views. Beautiful sunsets. Great facilities, clean separate toilets, fridge/freezer for use.
Electric pitches would make this a perfect pitch!

    Disliked:

The uphill to pitch, trolley really helped, but the long grass made it difficult especially with the wet weather of resent.

Beautiful views, lovely welcoming owners, just the right amount of facilities and a really laidback vibe. On arrival we picked our spot to pitch up and we’re soon greeted by friendly fellow campers, who showed us where everything was including local trails to Hadrian’s Wall and Hexham, the swallows soaring in and out of the barn around us. The owner then came for a chat to see if all was ok and offered us a place to put our bikes and a fire pit. Lots of nice touches, a clean and hot shower, comfortable loos which were never too busy and a fridge & freezer for our goodies. A wonderful stay, wish we could have stayed longer.

The owners are wonderful people who can not do enough for you. There are Fire Pits with griddle included, which allows you to cook outside and have a BBQ or just sit and enjoy the heat and the view as the sun sets. There is adequate toilets and a Shower room even though considered a wild camping site. An outside sink provided to wash up your dishes etc, and a large fridge in the barn. The fields are on a slope, but flat enough at the top and bottom to pitch. There were noisy people for one night who were swiftly dealt with and they did not cause any further annoyance, as the owners do not stand for this type of anti-social behaviour. Loads to do in the immediate area and beyond. Near Hexham for amenities and shops. Recommend is the restaurants in Corbridge (Black Bull) only a 15/20 min drive from the site. There is a pub next door and you can walk 3/4 mile to the village Acomb, that has x3 pubs :) People in the village are very amiable and friendly.

    Disliked:

No dislikes. Grass could be cut on pitch areas (Just an improvement suggestion). Although you have to get rid of your own waste, the council waste centre is only 2.5 miles away in Hexham and really easy to find with no problem.
