  • Remote site set on the edge of Northumberland National Park
  • A short drive to Kielder Water and Forest watersports activities
  • Café/bar on site selling local produce and crafts
Remote, wild, spacious and scenic are all terms rightly fitting The Boe Rigg, in Northumberland National Park a few miles from the market town of Bellingham. Walking and cycling routes are all around here, along with a huge range of outdoor activities within a short drive including the high ropes, watersports and zipwires of Kielder Water and Forest. Also within driving distance are several famed north of England attractions such as Hadrian's Wall and Alnwick Castle, both under 40 miles, and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, under 50. The site's excellent facilities include a café/bar open daily to sell produce and handicrafts from local growers and craftspeople. Among The Boe Rigg's other amenities are accessible washrooms with toilets and hot showers, a launderette with washers and dryers and a washing-up area. Free wifi is available in the main building. Campfires and barbecues are both allowed but must be off the ground.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great hospitality from the owners, well drawn out campsite, nice hot showers, great variety and restaurant. Lovely seeing the animals, especially the chickens taking their seat in the outdoor drinking area. Very comical. Nothings too much trouble for neil and linda. Very clean and tidy site and got talking to some locals there who were very helpful. Great views of the countryside. Well worth the money

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely little site, pitches are spaced out nicely so it all feels quite private. Restaurant/bar and takeaway on site (it’s a lovely bonus for when the kids have had you up at 5:45am and you don’t feel like preparing 3 full meals that day 🤣). There is a little stream running down the side of the site, with a tyre swing which our little tribe spent most of their time at. Toilets and showers are clean. Owners/staff are lovely, nothing is too much trouble.

Disliked: The only downside for us was the midges that appeared around 7-8pm in quite a swarm and these sort of ruined our evenings. Probably wouldn’t have been as bad had we been prepared and had some sort of fly zapper/repellant!

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Positive: the manager/chef was a decent guy. In the week the site is quiet, fairly empty . The pitches are a good size , with water tap at each pitch. And the bar is nice and the option of a restaurant if you would like cooked food for breakfast or dinner. Nice views around the site .

Disliked: . Negative : the worker on site who helps with pouring pints , doesn’t use soap in toilets 🤢 . The showers are not hot in men’s . Half the toilets/showers are out of order or broken latches. Do not stay at weekends the site is full of regulars who are people, who play drum and base all night and the owner does nothing . And the children wander around pitches leaving rubbish. Also the tent pitches are on top of a hill exposed to the elements , we were concerned our tent was going to blow away had a few broken guy ropes .

Local attractions

Kielder Water and Forest within 16 miles are full of watersports activities such as canoeing, sailing, and waterskiing, along with water walker and sea scooter hire. A high ropes course, climbing, zipwiring, fencing, archery and crossbow are among the many forest activities available on and above land. Three of the attractions of the Hadrian's Wall UNESCO World Heritage site are within a short drive: Housesteads Roman fort, the most complete in Britain; Vindolanda, and Chesters Roman Fort, six miles from Hexham. Also famed in the region is Alnwick Castle and Garden 37 miles away, made up of huge formal gardens including the world's largest treehouse, and in a setting that will be instantly recognised by Harry Potter fans (broomstick training is available during the summer months: how magic). The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is about 45 miles from here, to reach Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island via moorland, countryside and ancient forest. The site is 45 miles from Carlisle.
