  • Excellent location on the banks of the River Ouse in Bishopthorpe
  • A 10-minute drive to York city centre, with summer riverbus available
  • Restaurant, café-bar, playground, beauty salon and kayak hire on site
The name says it all here – The Riverfront York is indeed in a gorgeous location on the banks of the River Ouse, on the edge of the North Yorkshire village of Bishopthorpe. This is a fabulous setting for many reasons – the lush greenery and river views take top billing, of course, but there’s also the fact that the centre of York is only about three miles away. Drive up to the city in about 10 minutes, cycle it in 20 minutes or (if you’re here between April and September) catch a riverbus for a particularly scenic journey to the centre. Other ways to enjoy the river include hiring motor boats or kayaks on site, or taking walks along the riverside path. And if that all sounds like too much effort, just find a quiet spot and settle down with a good book. Facilities at this site have been very nicely thought out: there’s a playground for the kids and a beauty salon where frazzled grown-ups can treat themselves to a bit of pampering. Food is easily sorted as well, with a café-bar selling breakfasts, coffees, snacks and sandwiches. Bosun, the main restaurant (open Thursday to Sunday), also has a full menu featuring local seasonal ingredients, steak specials, seafood dishes, Sunday lunches and kids’ options. The bathrooms are worth an honourable mention, too: these smart modern facilities have been stylishly decorated and kitted out with accessible stalls, as well as handy extras like hairdryers.

What customers say

A beautiful, clean and peaceful riverside site, highly praised for its modern, immaculate shower and toilet facilities. Excellent for visiting York, with easy bus access and riverside walks. Some guests found pitches short and noted limited food availability in the evenings or early week. The booking system for boat hire experienced issues, and occasional noise from maintenance work was noted. The site is recommended for its location and quality facilities.

Liked What a little gem this site is. We have just returned home after 4 nights in our tourer and we loved it. The site is really well kept and the shower/toilet facilities are fab. The showers are waterfall style, lovely and hot as well as spacious. The site has a lovely little cafe/bar where you can grab a bite to eat or drink and sit along the many picnic tables or private domes you can hire. We also took advantage of the storage facility for my husbands bike which was also included. There is a local co op and a few pubs in the village which is around a 5-10 minute walk. We got the bus straight into York from just outside the site also. You can also walk into York along the riverside which is about 3 miles. We will definitely be returning to this site. Thankyou for a lovely stay.

Disliked Nothing, everything was great.

Liked Superb facilities. We didn’t use the shower block but it was beautifully decorated. Like a 5-star hotel! Unfortunately the Bosuns only opens certain days and although there for five nights, we were out of luck. We did get a coffee and cake from the café which we enjoyed in one of the pods overlooking the river. We hired a boat for a morning and had a wonderful tootle down the River Ouse. Really wonderful place, like a spa hotel but for caravaners!

Disliked Pitches, though super neat, were a little short. Our van stuck out a few feet, as did many others.

The booking system for the boats was on the fritz and showed that all afternoons were full, so we booked a morning only to then discover that nobody was booked in the afternoon. We did highlight this with our boat host who promised to look into it.

Liked The site was great, the location was fantastic, the facilities were very good, York was within walking distance and only 15 minutes bus ride away

Disliked There were workmen cutting trees throughout the afternoon and morning of our stay. I did highlight this to staff but I was told it was planned. If it was planned why wasn’t this fact highlighted on the website before we booked. The peace and tranquility of a great location was spoilt as we listened to the constant drone of Chainsaws during the working days

Local attractions

When in York (10 minutes’ drive), head straight to the Minster for a tour of its spectacular stained-glass windows and bird’s-eye views of the city from the top of the Central Tower. Then take a walk on the medieval city walls or through the Shambles area, and visit the Jorvik Viking Centre to learn about the city’s Viking past. If your family is into getting lost in mazes, you might not want to miss the various options at York Maze (15 minutes). In addition to a maize maze the size of several football pitches (and with paths cut according to a different theme each year), there are musical mazes and a 3D mineshaft maze. Open between April and September, Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens (20 minutes) is a four-acre cottage garden featuring areas such as a wildflower meadow (with plants and flowers attracting bees and butterflies) and a wildlife pond populated by dragonflies and frogs.
