  • Excellent location on the banks of the River Ouse in Bishopthorpe
  • A 10-minute drive to York city centre, with summer riverbus available
  • Restaurant, café-bar, playground, beauty salon and kayak hire on site
The name says it all here – The Riverfront York is indeed in a gorgeous location on the banks of the River Ouse, on the edge of the North Yorkshire village of Bishopthorpe. This is a fabulous setting for many reasons – the lush greenery and river views take top billing, of course, but there’s also the fact that the centre of York is only about three miles away. Drive up to the city in about 10 minutes, cycle it in 20 minutes or (if you’re here between April and September) catch a riverbus for a particularly scenic journey to the centre. Other ways to enjoy the river include hiring motor boats or kayaks on site, or taking walks along the riverside path. And if that all sounds like too much effort, just find a quiet spot and settle down with a good book. Facilities at this site have been very nicely thought out: there’s a playground for the kids and a beauty salon where frazzled grown-ups can treat themselves to a bit of pampering. Food is easily sorted as well, with a café-bar selling breakfasts, coffees, snacks and sandwiches. Bosun, the main restaurant (open Thursday to Sunday), also has a full menu featuring local seasonal ingredients, steak specials, seafood dishes, Sunday lunches and kids’ options. The bathrooms are worth an honourable mention, too: these smart modern facilities have been stylishly decorated and kitted out with accessible stalls, as well as handy extras like hairdryers.

What customers say

Guests praise the beautiful riverside location, excellent and immaculately clean shower and toilet facilities, and well-maintained pitches. The site is considered a great base for visiting York, with easy transport links including a river taxi. On-site amenities, such as the cafe and restaurant, are also frequently highlighted. Minor points raised include occasional Wi-Fi issues, limited wash-up sinks, and the food outlet closing early.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (large, no awning)

Liked Spacious, immaculate pitches. Plenty of space on the gravel to step onto and then the grass area was perfect for sitting in the sunshine. Shower blocks - wow ! Very nice and clean each time of use. The whole area is kept immaculate and it was a pleasure to stay.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (no awning, small)

Liked Very neat and well maintained site. EHU and water on the pitch I was on. Great shower block facilities - stylish. Cafe with freshly cooked food open until 4 pm. Lovely ice cream - which I had one both days I was there. Yum. Plenty of seating both riverside and between the cafe and Bosun’s restaurant. Bosun’s is a very nice restaurant. On the higher side but yes a great restaurant. The pods on the riverside were very nice. Self check in - so just park on the pitch allocated to you and set up.. Boat hire available and the also the riverboat ferry into York. Bus stop at the top of the lane into York also. Couple of pubs in the village. Walks along the riverbank. I’m definitely coming back in the future and don’t understand the 4 rating further down. I loved this site. No awnings mean that the lovely grassed area within the pitch remains looking fresh.

Disliked Nothing in particular for me, but some people might not feel comfortable with no security barriers. As long as this is highlighted then everyone is aware. I liked the fact I could get straight onto my allocated pitch.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (large, no awning)

Liked Location next to river and cafe on site.

Own water tap for each pitch .... alas no drain, required a lengthy walk across the graveled road to the one waste water disposal point.

Disliked Very clean toilet facilities but would benefit from privacy cubicles.

Gravel roadway noisy, would be better with a tarmac surface.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (medium)

Liked Excellent facilities (shower / toilet block), well maintained surroundings, very tidy and clean.

Disliked Lack of recycling facilities. We were told BBQs were not permitted only to witness several during our stay.
Not a dislike but we didn’t see the owners during our stay.

Electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch (no awning, XXL)

Liked Clean toilets / showers and warm . nice pitches . Lovely site next to river . Cafe good bacon sandwiches . Hired boat great fun .

Disliked Not the site but restaurant bolons were not very helpful . Online said could book table at 4 then they said they were closed . Tried booking night after fully booked too but guy said you didn’t need to book . Asked for other pubs no help , kind local helped us out with different options as we were tired after travelling and just wanted some hot food.

From the manager: Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed the clean, warm facilities, the riverside setting, the pitches, the café’s bacon sandwiches, and the fun of hiring a boat. It’s wonderful to know so many parts of your stay were enjoyable.

We’re sorry to hear about the difficulty you experienced when trying to book at Bosun’s. Although the restaurant operates its own booking system, it is part of The Riverfront York, and we take your comments seriously. We understand how frustrating it must have been after a long journey when you were simply looking for a hot meal, and we’re sorry this didn’t feel as smooth or as helpful as it should have.

We’ll be sharing your feedback with the Bosun’s team to ensure the guest experience is clearer and more consistent going forward.

Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review. We hope to welcome you back for another enjoyable stay.

Local attractions

When in York (10 minutes’ drive), head straight to the Minster for a tour of its spectacular stained-glass windows and bird’s-eye views of the city from the top of the Central Tower. Then take a walk on the medieval city walls or through the Shambles area, and visit the Jorvik Viking Centre to learn about the city’s Viking past. If your family is into getting lost in mazes, you might not want to miss the various options at York Maze (15 minutes). In addition to a maize maze the size of several football pitches (and with paths cut according to a different theme each year), there are musical mazes and a 3D mineshaft maze. Open between April and September, Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens (20 minutes) is a four-acre cottage garden featuring areas such as a wildflower meadow (with plants and flowers attracting bees and butterflies) and a wildlife pond populated by dragonflies and frogs.
