  • Peaceful site 10 minutes’ drive from York city centre
  • Well-placed for a city break in a rural setting
  • Half an hour from Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Tired of spending your hols stuck in the car? At Crockey Hill Caravan Site, 10 minutes’ drive from York city centre in North Yorkshire, you can park up for a few days and let yourself forget where you put the keys – you won’t need them. Crockey Hill is well-placed for exploring this part of Yorkshire on two wheels: routes 65 and 66 of the National Cycle Network are easily accessible, both around 15 minutes’ cycle from the site – follow these to make your way to other national routes that crisscross the North Yorkshire countryside. Missing city life? You can catch the bus into York from the stop right outside the site entrance and wander the city streets, visiting York Minster, the National Railway Museum, a host of breweries and tons more. If you want to party the night away in the city bars and clubs, there are even late-night buses at weekends that’ll bring you back to base. Back on site, you can relax after your busy days and nights. Once you’ve worked up an appetite – or even if you’re just craving hangover food – you can pile up the barbecue with supplies from the nearby farm shop then chow down in peace and quiet. If you’d prefer a break from the cooking, there are plenty of restaurants, and bar-restaurants, nearby. The site has a drinking water tap and grey water and waste disposal points but please note there are no toilets or showers.

Liked Good size pitcher's all grass but very good drainage as it rained heavy all night and could not tell in the morning dry as a bone.Very friendly staff, good information explained about the bus routes and places to visit, easy to go to York and cheep . Also a shed with information leaflets, easy to get water and disposal point enjoyed it lovely little site.

Disliked No toilets and showers

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Your review is greatly appreciated. The grass field is sandy and so all surface water drains away quickly. Even in the winter months we can stay open until early December which is great for visitors to the famous York Christmas markets and Ice Skating. Hope we can welcome you another time. Kind regards Gina and Gary

Liked The site was extremely easy to find and driving into the site was also very easy with lots of space. Gina very kindly texted details of codes and our pitch number as we were late arriving. All the information we needed was available.

The site was so quiet and pitches lovely and spacious. We spent hours watching wild rabbits hopping around nibbling on the grass! Their babies were chasing each other and playing!

We took our bikes and thoroughly enjoyed cycling into York on both days of our stay. We took the main route into York but found a cycle route back which was longer but very quiet. The site is not far from the city centre either by road or by bike so a perfect location for us.

We would definitely recommend this lovely place and will definitely book again.

Disliked nothing at all!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review, it really does describe the feel of the site and the ease in which you can travel into and around York by bus or bike - we are just a few minutes from the famous cyle route 65. Look forward to welcoming you back to stay. Kind regards Gina and Gary

Liked Well laid out pitches, we loved the simplicity of the site as water, CDP & grey waste is all we wanted. Fabulous little site with the most welcoming owners, weather again an added bonus and handy bus service at the end of the road into York. If you like quiet, no frills this is just perfect it is for us x

Liked Loved this site. Very welcoming hosts. Bus stop into York 2 min walk away. Even though we had rain/snow the pitches handled the weather very well.
Will definitely return 100%

From the manager: Delighted you will return again, we look forward to welcoming you to stay - hopefully with less rain next time! As you say our field is sandy allowing surface water to drain very quickly - comes in handy with some of our autumn/winters :) Kind regards Gina and Gary

Liked Small, quiet site. Brilliant location for a short bus trip into York. Buses run regularly all day until late at night. Well organised waste/water facilities. This was my first ever campervan trip. Gary, the site owner was brilliant on arrival and helped me set everything up and level my van. The gate to the field also has a lock so I felt very secure in my van as a solo traveller. Would absolutely stay again.

Disliked It's not a dislike as such but the main road is not too far away. You can hear it, if you try really hard 😃. It did not bother me or my dogs at all. The plus side of the main road means it's not far to walk to the bus stop.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: It was lovely to meet you and help out on your first campervan trip, hopfully the first of many. Great to hear you felt secure with the code locked gate and would stay again. We open for booking March 2025. Kind regards Gina and Gary

Local attractions

Start your stay at Crockey Hill Caravan Site with a step back in time at the haunted Nunnington Hall or the spectacular Castle Howard (which eagle-eyed visitors may recognise as the setting for Brideshead Revisited), both within 40 minutes’ drive of the site. If you’re in need of a little retail therapy after all that (hard to look at the decadence of those old stately piles without wanting just a little of your own), you have options: the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet is less than five minutes from Crockey Hill, and you’re a bus trip or 10-minute drive from the shops of York (make sure to stop by the spectacular Shambles for souvenirs). Once you’ve burned a hole in your credit card, stick around York for the racecourse, Jorvik Viking Centre and York Dungeon, then set your mouth watering with a guided tour of the city’s cocoa-y goodness past at York’s Chocolate Story. Want to immerse yourself in the peace and quiet of unbridled nature instead? Make your way to the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to follow riverbank footpaths, farmland trails and scenic bridleways, and be sure to stop into the highly recommended pubs, cafés and restaurants when you need to get your energy back.
