  • Peaceful site 10 minutes’ drive from York city centre
  • Well-placed for a city break in a rural setting
  • Half an hour from Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Tired of spending your hols stuck in the car? At Crockey Hill Caravan Site, 10 minutes’ drive from York city centre in North Yorkshire, you can park up for a few days and let yourself forget where you put the keys – you won’t need them. Crockey Hill is well-placed for exploring this part of Yorkshire on two wheels: routes 65 and 66 of the National Cycle Network are easily accessible, both around 15 minutes’ cycle from the site – follow these to make your way to other national routes that crisscross the North Yorkshire countryside. Missing city life? You can catch the bus into York from the stop right outside the site entrance and wander the city streets, visiting York Minster, the National Railway Museum, a host of breweries and tons more. If you want to party the night away in the city bars and clubs, there are even late-night buses at weekends that’ll bring you back to base. Back on site, you can relax after your busy days and nights. Once you’ve worked up an appetite – or even if you’re just craving hangover food – you can pile up the barbecue with supplies from the nearby farm shop then chow down in peace and quiet. If you’d prefer a break from the cooking, there are plenty of restaurants, and bar-restaurants, nearby. The site has a drinking water tap and grey water and waste disposal points but please note there are no toilets or showers.

Disliked Not much amenities

From the manager: Great to read you enjoyed our location, as you say it is so handy for York - the local bus is a great option, with a bus passing by 7 days a week from earlty til late. We always want our guests to know all about our site before their stay and so we advertise our amenities - electric hook up, grey and waste disposal points and fresh water supply. We have some great local walks and cycle tracks nearby in our peaceful rural setting - ideal for a city break in a rural setting. Delighted to read you would recommend us to friends and stay again - hope we can welcome you in 2026 :)

Liked Big pitched
Peaceful night

Disliked No hard standing. Field was getting chromed up with vehicles afraid of getting stuck but made it out. No interned , myself and hubby have different providers but unable to use internet . Not able to watch tv due to this

From the manager: This review is very diasappointing and in no way reflects all our other reviews. If you are considering booking with us please please read all the other reviews left by our guests. We usually score a 10/10 with a smattering of 7-9/10 scores.
Almost every review thanks us for our helpful and friendly welcome - something we are very proud of. We work very hard to provide a good experience for our guests.
Our site is regualary praised in reviews for being clean and tidy.
We do not advertise Wifi as part of the stay - other guests manage very well on their own networks and are able to watch their TV with no problems at all.
The field is very sandy and vehicles do not get stuck which is why we stay open every year until early December - reading recent reviews from guests staying over the same weekend confirm this - not one of them mentions being afraid of getting stuck.
We clearly advertise that we are a grass only site with no hard standing.
At least the site was able to provide a big pitch and some peace - I wonder at the intention of such a review..?

From the manager: Lovely to welcome you to stay and great to hear you would stay again and welcome us to friends. We are always super busy for visitors to the wonderful York Christmas markets - our sandy grass field comes in very handy when we need surface water to drain away keeping the ground firm during winter months and allowing visitors to safely and easily drive on and off site. Kind regards Gina and Gary

Liked Friendly owner, grass pitch was level and not water logged even with lots of rain. 5 minute walk from regular bus service into York

From the manager: Thankyou for your review - our sandy field does drains so quickly in the wet weather - comes in handy as we are open until early December each year! Kind regards Gina and Gary

Electric optional grass touring pitch (members only)

Liked Easy access from main A19 road, great location for designer outlet with links for park and ride into York. Well maintained.

Disliked Little bit noisy from the road but you take that given its ease of access. It’s ’no Frills’ but for a short stay it’s perfect.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Lovely to welcome you to stay. As you say the Designer Outlet is really handy - only 2 mins drive from the site. The Annual Christmas Winter Wonderland and Outdoor Ice Skating opens at the Outlet on the 14/11/25 to 04/01/26 - makes a lovely Xmas day out. Great to hear you would stay again and recommend us to friends. Kind regards Gina and Gary

Liked Flat grass pitch with secure gate (code for padlock)

Disliked Busy road with no pavements to walk along. Couldn’t find anywhere to walk the dogs.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, great to read you liked the flat grass pitch and you would recommend us to friends. Unfortunatley you did not enquire about walks when I greeted you on arrival and you did not spot the information in the Info Hut which has details and directions for you to walk along the path outside the caravan site gate towards the public right of way. This is a lovely countryside walk during which the dogs can safely run free from their leads. There is a circular route and a also a walk into the suberb of Fulford. Kind regards Gina and Gary

Liked Very basic but clean and well maintained. You HAVE to be self contained. 10 - 15 minutes by regular bus service from the city center. Traffic is busy at peak times but quietened down at night.
Very helpful owner.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Delighted you plan to return and stay with us again, we are open up to the 7 December giving ample opportunity to enjoy the Christmas markets. As you say, with your own toilet and wash facilities plus the option we offer for electric hook up and the grey and waste disposal points and fresh water supply you can enjoy a stay close to York in a rural setting. The bus is super handy to get in and out of the city, the traffic can build up during peak rush hour times adding a few more minutes to your bus journey. Kind regards Gina and Gary.

Local attractions

Start your stay at Crockey Hill Caravan Site with a step back in time at the haunted Nunnington Hall or the spectacular Castle Howard (which eagle-eyed visitors may recognise as the setting for Brideshead Revisited), both within 40 minutes’ drive of the site. If you’re in need of a little retail therapy after all that (hard to look at the decadence of those old stately piles without wanting just a little of your own), you have options: the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet is less than five minutes from Crockey Hill, and you’re a bus trip or 10-minute drive from the shops of York (make sure to stop by the spectacular Shambles for souvenirs). Once you’ve burned a hole in your credit card, stick around York for the racecourse, Jorvik Viking Centre and York Dungeon, then set your mouth watering with a guided tour of the city’s cocoa-y goodness past at York’s Chocolate Story. Want to immerse yourself in the peace and quiet of unbridled nature instead? Make your way to the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to follow riverbank footpaths, farmland trails and scenic bridleways, and be sure to stop into the highly recommended pubs, cafés and restaurants when you need to get your energy back.
