  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, adults-only campsite offering peaceful surroundings and spacious, level pitches. Its location is ideal for exploring the local area, with a village pub and shop within easy walking distance. While facilities are generally clean, some guests found them basic or dated, though a new shower block is under construction. Minor issues like limited electricity amperage and occasional road noise were noted.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Beautiful small adults only campsite. There was such a mix of type of campers with tents, trailer tents, campervans, motor homes and caravans, they had both electric or non electric pitches. We stayed on a hardstanding pitch, which was very big, with plenty of grass area and not close to the vans next door.
Had a lovely walk into Brompton on Swale, only about 10-15 minutes, and we walked along the river and found a very private small beach area. Lovely pub in the village for some refreshments, where they also offer motorhome stayovers.
No wifi but we knew this before we went, so took the TV ariel with us (had to watch the England match)

Disliked Porta cabin near to our pitch, just the one shower and 2 toilets for woman and one shower and 2 toilets for men - this wasnt a problem for us but if the site was very busy then there may be a delay with showering.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Very flat and level pitch. 10 mins walk from a pub with great food. Warm shower.

Disliked Had to cover solar light on post marking the pitch as it too bright next to the tent. A few late night military fly-overs and some road noise from nearby A1(M).

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked The area was great to walk into the village pub. (food was good). Excellent drive to Richmond.
Campsite was great. 3 Cows and sheep to watch and entertain you, calm and peaceful. A great site to stay for a while or use as a couple of night to stop over on travels on the A1. Will definitely return.

Disliked It's not a dislike as such... But the green container toilets were good and very clean.. But shower lead to head was worn needs replacing. For amount of shower use these areas must be regularly checked to make sure functioning is secure and not rusty or leaking (which I'm sorry to say rusty lead to shower head).

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A nice well kept adult only site. Staff very friendly and helpful and can’t do enough for you
Good location for visiting the local area and a nice village pub in walking distance.

Disliked Toilet/ shower block very basic but there is a new block about to be opened although we missed out on that.
Washing up facilities very poor.
Traffic noise was quite load at night from the A1 in our tent as was the planes taking off nearby.
Worst of all was the traffic on the lane early morning. Didn’t get one decent nights sleep in 3 nights

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked The quiet, peaceful and tranquil site, very tidy and well set up, everything you need for a relaxing holiday, we loved it so much we booked an extra night and would have booked more but for the fact that my wife had to return to work so we stayed and needed to leave very early the next morning but it was well worth the early morning start for the extra night here!

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nice site. Peaceful.

Disliked The toilet block heating on all the time so it was a bit uncomfortable and hot considering the outside temperature was almost 30%. Ideal for normal British weather tho. 😂
But.
There is a brand new toilet/shower block opening soon.

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
