  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

What customers say

A peaceful, adults-only spot with good facilities, though a few reckon they need a spruce-up. Great for exploring Richmond and local pubs/shops. Most electric hook-ups are fine, but some found the amperage a bit low. Overall, a well-kept, relaxing break.

Liked Very quiet, well kept pitches

Disliked Bathroom facilities old and tired, but it appears that a new facility is being built.

From the manager: Thank you for leaving us a review, we were not aware that they had put up road closed signs that day, the road was still open when I came into work that morning, I have asked that they place a business still open sign for our guests. Our new shower block will be ready for next season. :-))

Excellent site, fantastic pitches and amenities. Returning ASAP 10/10!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Loved the site, it secluded enough so you feel peace and quiet yet close enough to Brompton should you need a trip to a shop or an evening in a local pub. There is also I lovely walk along the river a stones throw away! The pitch itself was in great condition, plenty of room and space even with a larger tent and space for our car. The amenities which included two toilets and a shower were kept clean and stocked. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will most definitely be returning for a longer stay.

Liked Flat pitch in quiet location easy access to Richmond and dales.

Disliked Slightly dodgy EHU ( one of the posts on our ring kept shorting out the supply). Once identified where the fault was the other posts worked well.
Toilet blocks and washing up facilities could be improved.

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked Turned up to Millfields, what a lovely setting and well mapped out, very quiet.
when booking up through Pitchup i booked a electric pitch and probably didn’t read the information about the electric hookup only being 10amp other sites we have visited we haven’t had any issues with our items in the campervan coolbox/low voltage kettle/ toaster.

Disliked The bad points are the Toilet/ shower room could do with being updated, if the site was busy they could be problems as there was only one toilet and one shower, there is another block at the other side we never used them so can’t comment on those, the electric hookup is only 10amp , we hooked up and plugged our cool box in which we have used on lots of other sites and instantly tripped there electric, couldn’t even boil our low wattage kettle this went on all night so in the end we give up, we contacted the owner, he was very helpful but he concluded it was probably our fault, we were booked in for two nights but only ended up staying for one due to the electricity problem and the weather.

Powered concrete and grass site

Liked The layout of the pitches, really spacious.
Our own water supply was a bonus for us.
Very peaceful stay, we don’t tend to stop at weekends. Close to Richmond and the Dales. And of course Adults only. We liked the self check in.

Disliked Those awful roadworks outside the site. I could not get onto the site because the entrance was blocked by a large tractor. I had to continue on to Richmond to turn round and try again. But not the site’s fault.
Facilities adequate, but needs an update at some stage. However in our caravan we have our own washroom and shower.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review, I can only apologise for the roadworks, they are a nightmare. :-(

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
