  • Adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Richmond in North Yorkshire
  • Catterick Racecourse five minutes’ drive; Easby Abbey 40 minutes’ walk
  • Dog-friendly pitches; Brompton on Swale pub and shop 10 minutes’ walk
For a quiet adults-only North Yorkshire stay far removed from the hurly burly of everyday life, Millfields Caravan and Camping is a tiny site tucked away in Brompton on Swale, a historic village mentioned in the Domesday Book. Peaceful it certainly is, yet there’s masses to do and see hereabouts. The lively market town of Richmond is 10 minutes’ drive away, with its photogenic Georgian architecture, museums, a castle and lots of entertainment options from cosy inns to chic restaurants. It’s also gateway to adventures in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and any keen racing fans among you have the choice of nine major racecourses: York is an hour’s drive, Wetherby 40 minutes, and Catterick a doddle to get to, being a mere five minutes away. And back on site, the manicured pitches look out over lush countryside (great for walking any dogs you've brought along), with simple facilities including showers and washing-up areas. If you choose to conjure up alfresco feasts on the barbecue, pick up essentials in the handy local shop, or you can always head to the village pub for a pint and a pie (both 10 minutes’ walk).

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: We arrived on the Friday and we're allocated a good size pitch . One of our sons was joining us Saturday .
On Saturday we had two of them with us . The owner was lovely and we were able to pay the extra . A lovely quiet couple of days .

Disliked: For the number of pitches ,more facilities would be good .

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Exactly as expected. A great location and everything as advertised.
It would appear that the problems with the electric have been resolved as apart for a slight issue with accidental damage, which was quickly resolved, there we no problems at all.
While a number of people have raised an issue with the limited toilet/shower facilties these are due to be upgraded and were very clean and well presented.

Disliked: Some people may have an issue as there was no WiFi and G5 was limited however this was known in advance and was not an issue for us.

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great location with lots to do just a short drive away, and a local pub in walking distance. On arrival, it was clear which pitch we were allocated on the board at the entrance to the site. There are plenty of toilets and showers at each end of the site, which are well maintained and in separate cubicles (some sites we’ve been to have the shower and toilet in the same cubicle, meaning a toilet/shower is out of action if someone is using one or another!)

The pitches are flat and nicely spaced apart. We had neighbours both nights and they weren’t too close, and the electric hookup was easily accessible.

Disliked: The power to the whole site blew in the early hours, which is obviously out of the owners control, but there was no communication about this. Luckily we were leaving in the morning but this could have been an issue if we were staying longer and had food in the fridge.

Another minor issue is a lack of space to put things in the showers. There are two hooks to hang things but a shelf/bench would be useful for clean clothes.

Liked: Absolutely loved the campsite. The tent pitches are spacious and very clean.
Some of the reviews regarding the toilets nearly put us off booking however we can honestly say that there was nothing wrong with the toilets or showers. They were clean and showers were great!! The pub down the road The Crown was a lovely stop off after a day at Catterick races. The area around the campsite is stunning. We would definitely stay again x

Local attractions

Stroll directly from your pitch to the spectacular hilltop ruins of 12th-century Easby Abbey (40 minutes’ walk), or have a ramble along the River Swale to Richmond Castle and the pebble beach at Richmond Falls (both roughly an hour). And of course, there are hikes and cycle rides for all levels of ability in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (15 minutes’ drive). Head to Foxglove Covert Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes) for the chance to spy birds of prey and kingfishers in the moorland, meadow and wetland habitats, or if stately houses are on your agenda, combine exploring formal gardens and a lakeside park at Jacobean-era Kiplin Hall (10 minutes) with a tour of the mansion’s richly decorated rooms. The likelihood is you’ll adore fussing over the camels, llamas and ostriches at Mainsgill Farm Shop (15 minutes), where you can also tuck into a tasty cream tea. Should the weather turn against you, book tickets for blockbuster films at The Station or tour Richmond’s restored Georgian Theatre Royal (both 10 minutes), still with its original stage and seating.
