Foxhill Park: Peaceful rural site

General

  • Peaceful rural site 20 minutes' drive from York
  • Half an hour's drive from North York Moors National Park
  • Easy access from A64 and close to bus stops for day trips

City break, rural rambles and seaside strolls all on your holiday game plan? Off to Yorkshire with you then, and a stay at Foxhill Park, just outside the village of Claxton and within easy reach of all of the above, thanks to a rather handy location close to the A64.

From here it’s a 20-minute drive south to the fab historic attractions of York, or around half an hour north to the North York Moors for hiking, biking, horse riding and steam train rides. Add in a day or two by the coast (an hour’s drive away) and refresh with a brew in one of the local tea rooms and you’ll start to have an idea why the locals fondly refer to their region as ‘God’s own county’.

Fancy leaving the car behind for the day? There’s a bus stop very nearby for trips to York or to the market town of Malton, and a golf course within walking distance. The woods and fields all around are great places to stride forth too, for dogs (and humanfolk) in need of walkies.

No lengthy list of entertainment facilities here to distract from the chilled-out country vibe (this place thrives on peaceful times, not parties), but the essential amenities are all here and well-maintained: wifi access, a food shop and a smart modern toilet block with hot showers and accessible bathroom.

Absolutely lovely site! We had a great bank holiday weekend and I can't fault the site at all. The touring pitches are spacious and the site is well laid out. The facilities are immaculate. The wardens were very friendly and extremely helpful. The location is great for York/the coast plus Stamford Bridge, Malton, Pickering etc. The A64 IS a busy road but the people who could hear the road noise and be bothered by it must have very good hearing! We didn't notice it at all and obviously with it being bank holiday the traffic was at its busiest.
We will be back and we would highly recommend this site.

Staff were very helpful. Facilities are good. Bus stop into York directly outside of site.

    Disliked:

Site layout could do with revamping . Better layout of pitches could enhance layout of site. Entrance onto site looks untidy. Hedges between several pitches might help. Most of the units on site were unattended. Half of site turned over to mobile home units. No real campsite atmosphere. Sorry.

    Disliked:

Parked in overspill touring area, least 5 minutes walk to the toilet/shower.
    No WiFi signal.
Elsan point just a toilet stuck in middle of field.
No bins had to walk down to reception to get rid of your rubbish.
10amp must be careful what your using.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your stay.
In response to your comments:
You requested a grass pitch so was placed in the grass camping/touring field. It isn't an overspill area.
The maximum distance to the toilets/showers is approximately 150 metres from the farthest point.
We have tried to improve WiFi by adding a booster but it doesn't cover the whole site which is why we have kept it free.
The toilet Elsan point works by flushing toilet waste away without leaving smells behind. The area is surrounded by fencing.
Point taken in relation to 10amp. We acknowledge for caravans this can be limiting and will look to address this.
Thank you again as we strive to improve.

If anything, the nearby A64 is very busy. There is some road noise, but that did not bother us. It can be difficult to get on to, or cross over the A64.

Local attractions

A day trip to York is pretty much an essential – or, even better, several day trips. See the big sights (the minster, the timber-framed shops of the Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre), but also make time to visit the National Railway Museum, take a boat trip on the Ouse river and grab a cuppa and a fat rascal cake at the famed Betty’s tearoom.

For a blast of sea air, head over to Bridlington, around an hour’s drive away, for a traditional British beach day out with promenade strolls, funfair rides and donkey rides – perhaps even a spot of paddling in the North Sea for the hardier types.

Outdoorsy types should make a beeline for the North York Moors National Park, around half an hour away, for walking trails and traffic-free bike routes across one of the country’s largest expanses of heather moorland. Husky trekking, rafting and ziplining are among the other options for active souls; those who prefer a more leisurely pace may opt to see the landscape from the comfort of a heritage train ride.

Must see

  • Castle Howard (5.9 miles)
  • The Arboretum - Kew at Castle Howard (5.9 miles)
  • Kew at Castle Howard (5.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Treasurer's House (7.7 miles)
  • Goddards Garden (9.4 miles)
