  • Peaceful rural site 20 minutes' drive from York
  • Half an hour's drive from North York Moors National Park
  • Easy access from A64 and close to bus stops for day trips
City break, rural rambles and seaside strolls all on your holiday game plan? Off to Yorkshire with you then, and a stay at Fox Hill Holiday Park, just outside the village of Claxton and within easy reach of all of the above, thanks to a rather handy location close to the A64. From here it’s a 20-minute drive south to the fab historic attractions of York, or around half an hour north to the North York Moors for hiking, biking, horse riding and steam train rides. Add in a day or two by the coast (an hour’s drive away) and refresh with a brew in one of the local tea rooms and you’ll start to have an idea why the locals fondly refer to their region as ‘God’s own county’. Fancy leaving the car behind for the day? There’s a bus stop very nearby for trips to York or to the market town of Malton, and a golf course within walking distance. The woods and fields all around are great places to stride forth too, for dogs (and humanfolk) in need of walkies. No lengthy list of entertainment facilities here to distract from the chilled-out country vibe (this place thrives on peaceful times, not parties), but the essential amenities are all here and well-maintained: a food shop and a smart modern toilet block with hot showers and accessible bathroom.

What customers say

This is a clean, well-maintained, and peaceful site with friendly, helpful staff. Pitches are generally spacious, level, and well-equipped. Facilities, particularly the toilet and shower blocks, are consistently praised for their cleanliness and good hot water supply. The dedicated dog walking field is a significant asset. While some minor issues like Wi-Fi coverage in certain areas and occasional inconsistencies with shower temperature have been noted, these are generally outweighed by the overall positive experience. The site's convenient location for visiting York and other attractions is also a highlight.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely peaceful park. Good sized pitches and really clean facilities. Loved the big dog exercise area, the cleanest dog field I've ever been to!

The hosts are great, so friendly and helpful.

We did trips out to Whitby, Castle Howard, Bridlington, Studley Royal water gardens, Rievaulx Abbey (there's a lovely walk from Helmsley to the abbey) and a trip on the bus, straight from outside the campsite, to York.

We had a great stay, very relaxing. Thank you.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nice large field with plenty of space in the middle so didn't feel over looked.
2 toilets and 2 showers just at bottom of field with 1 sink outside to wash pots.

Disliked Although says bus stop outside. And yes there is. Would be helpful for bus times to be shown !! 9.45. 12.45 3.45 to get into York. Last one back was 16.15 (something like that) so not the best times at all especially as takes 50 mins ! Local pub shuts early. Took uber which was £11.95 one way.

From the manager: Hi Helen, we are glad you enjoyed the spacious pitches.
We have signs displaying the bus times outside reception, and the main toilet block. Unfortunately we are not responsible for the pick up times, and being in a rural location means there can be long waits between the services.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Clean, spacious caravan park. Could do with more toilets and showers to cope with the amount of pitches.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Eric, Thank you for your kind review. We do have our main shower and toilet block also available for our visiting campers to use if the campsite toilets are busy. This block is next to reception. Hope to see you again soon

Local attractions

A day trip to York is pretty much an essential – or, even better, several day trips. See the big sights (the minster, the timber-framed shops of the Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre), but also make time to visit the National Railway Museum, take a boat trip on the Ouse river and grab a cuppa and a fat rascal cake at the famed Betty’s tearoom. For a blast of sea air, head over to Bridlington, around an hour’s drive away, for a traditional British beach day out with promenade strolls, funfair rides and donkey rides – perhaps even a spot of paddling in the North Sea for the hardier types. Outdoorsy types should make a beeline for the North York Moors National Park, around half an hour away, for walking trails and traffic-free bike routes across one of the country’s largest expanses of heather moorland. Husky trekking, rafting and ziplining are among the other options for active souls; those who prefer a more leisurely pace may opt to see the landscape from the comfort of a heritage train ride.
