General

  • Peaceful rural site 20 minutes' drive from York
  • Half an hour's drive from North York Moors National Park
  • Easy access from A64 and close to bus stops for day trips

City break, rural rambles and seaside strolls all on your holiday game plan? Off to Yorkshire with you then, and a stay at Foxhill Park, just outside the village of Claxton and within easy reach of all of the above, thanks to a rather handy location close to the A64.

From here it’s a 20-minute drive south to the fab historic attractions of York, or around half an hour north to the North York Moors for hiking, biking, horse riding and steam train rides. Add in a day or two by the coast (an hour’s drive away) and refresh with a brew in one of the local tea rooms and you’ll start to have an idea why the locals fondly refer to their region as ‘God’s own county’.

Fancy leaving the car behind for the day? There’s a bus stop very nearby for trips to York or to the market town of Malton, and a golf course within walking distance. The woods and fields all around are great places to stride forth too, for dogs (and humanfolk) in need of walkies.

No lengthy list of entertainment facilities here to distract from the chilled-out country vibe (this place thrives on peaceful times, not parties), but the essential amenities are all here and well-maintained: wifi access, a food shop and a smart modern toilet block with hot showers and accessible bathroom.

Excellent relaxing break site. 19/06/2018

Nice quiet relaxing camp site that seemed out of the way but was easy to get to. Close to park and ride for York city center and with frequent buses. The park allowed animals but there was no evidence of this and the site offered recycling facility's. The toilet and washing facility's at the campsite were very clean and really well looked after.

Very friendly and welcoming park staff, would definitely visit again with a bigger tent or even more suited to a caravan as most of the park was caravan occupants, great level pitches and grass quality.

    Disliked:

Only one small mention that the gate to the park was locked over night it was no issue as its good for safety, but a notice on the gate if you would like to go out early or come in late so you know the lock times and can leave your car in the car park area to do so if wanted.

We stayed at Foxhill Park only for 4 nights but wished that we could have stayed longer. the wardens were lovely and friendly and offered us a choice of pitches and advised us on a pitch that would stay dry should it rain. There was plenty of room between the pitches and the pitches themselves were enormous which was brilliant for our tent (8 x 4.6m) C&CC please note. EHU was included in our price of £20/night. Although it was close to the A64, the noise from it was not intrusive and didn't detract from the peace of the site. The showers are free with lots of hot water and were kept scrpulously clean. We took our two dogs and was surprised to find a secure field provided for them to run off steam, the girls loved it and spent most of the holiday in the field. There are some lovely villages around the site with decent pubs too. For dog friendly pubs, we tried the New Inn at Stamford bridge. Near the toilet/showers there is a list of chippies/takeaways/restaurants and pubs, also a list of dog friendly pubs.
A great site in a lovely location and I can't wait to go back

Local attractions

A day trip to York is pretty much an essential – or, even better, several day trips. See the big sights (the minster, the timber-framed shops of the Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre), but also make time to visit the National Railway Museum, take a boat trip on the Ouse river and grab a cuppa and a fat rascal cake at the famed Betty’s tearoom.

For a blast of sea air, head over to Bridlington, around an hour’s drive away, for a traditional British beach day out with promenade strolls, funfair rides and donkey rides – perhaps even a spot of paddling in the North Sea for the hardier types.

Outdoorsy types should make a beeline for the North York Moors National Park, around half an hour away, for walking trails and traffic-free bike routes across one of the country’s largest expanses of heather moorland. Husky trekking, rafting and ziplining are among the other options for active souls; those who prefer a more leisurely pace may opt to see the landscape from the comfort of a heritage train ride.

Must see

  • The Arboretum - Kew at Castle Howard (6.5 miles)
  • Castle Howard (6.5 miles)
  • Kew at Castle Howard (6.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Treasurer's House (7.0 miles)
  • Goddards Garden (8.7 miles)
