City break, rural rambles and seaside strolls all on your holiday game plan? Off to Yorkshire with you then, and a stay at Fox Hill Holiday Park, just outside the village of Claxton and within easy reach of all of the above, thanks to a rather handy location close to the A64. From here it’s a 20-minute drive south to the fab historic attractions of York, or around half an hour north to the North York Moors for hiking, biking, horse riding and steam train rides. Add in a day or two by the coast (an hour’s drive away) and refresh with a brew in one of the local tea rooms and you’ll start to have an idea why the locals fondly refer to their region as ‘God’s own county’. Fancy leaving the car behind for the day? There’s a bus stop very nearby for trips to York or to the market town of Malton, and a golf course within walking distance. The woods and fields all around are great places to stride forth too, for dogs (and humanfolk) in need of walkies. No lengthy list of entertainment facilities here to distract from the chilled-out country vibe (this place thrives on peaceful times, not parties), but the essential amenities are all here and well-maintained: a food shop and a smart modern toilet block with hot showers and accessible bathroom.

喜欢 This is a fab site made all the better by the fact that we had the whole camping field to ourselves!

Great dog walking area around the site and big dog field too.

Clean toilet and shower facilities.

喜欢 A very peaceful campsite in a very pleasant part of the country and some wonderful views of the sunset. There are a handful of fantastic pubs in neighbouring villages serving outstanding food, making for, overall a solid campsite. All facilities were nothing short of immaculate and the lady on the check in was very helpful.

不喜欢 The only negative that we had with this, was that Pitch Up showed that the campsite was fully booked, which was a bit of a downer when we booked as we had friends that wanted to join us that weekend, however when we arrived we were informed that we were the only people in the field, and after a 2 night stay we had only seen 2 more campers come and go. In all honesty we enjoyed the peace and quiet, and had a fantastic weekend. Not sure if this is accidental, an error on Pitch Up, or a way of ensuring fewer cancellations?

喜欢 We had a lovely quiet 2 night stay, the facilities were spotless! Pitches were lovely and spaced out too which made the stay. Good location too, easy access to York. We visited Monks Cross, Poppleton fair and went to Thirsk for an afternoon of paddle boarding.

不喜欢 The ground was very rocky! Bring a strong mallet with you as we had a few bent pegs due to big rocks in the ground!

A day trip to York is pretty much an essential – or, even better, several day trips. See the big sights (the minster, the timber-framed shops of the Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre), but also make time to visit the National Railway Museum, take a boat trip on the Ouse river and grab a cuppa and a fat rascal cake at the famed Betty’s tearoom. For a blast of sea air, head over to Bridlington, around an hour’s drive away, for a traditional British beach day out with promenade strolls, funfair rides and donkey rides – perhaps even a spot of paddling in the North Sea for the hardier types. Outdoorsy types should make a beeline for the North York Moors National Park, around half an hour away, for walking trails and traffic-free bike routes across one of the country’s largest expanses of heather moorland. Husky trekking, rafting and ziplining are among the other options for active souls; those who prefer a more leisurely pace may opt to see the landscape from the comfort of a heritage train ride.
