General

  • Busy, well-equipped site surrounded by the open Suffolk countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Sutton Hoo; 45 minutes from the coast
  • Theatre, restaurant, mini golf, owl sanctuary and play area on site

Looking for a Suffolk spot with lots of open space? The dog-friendly Stonham Barns Holiday Park might hit the sweet spot. Well-placed for the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and coast, this place is equal parts relaxing and active. The latter is very much helped by the fact that the site is part of the Stonham Barns Golf Park site, which has a whole host of family-friendly (and quite frankly fabulous) attractions…

There’s a pirate-themed miniature golf course, a sensory room and a funfair with rides and bumper cars, which should all prove a hit with pint-sized guests. No need to go hunting in the trees: the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on site has over 80 owls and daily flying displays featuring birds of prey. Catch a comedy or tribute act at the Aspal Theatre, sojourn at the fishing lakes or get creative at the pottery painting studio, all of which are on site.

Water activities are available on the lake, including paddleboarding, kayaking, zorbs and paddleboard yoga - guests are welcome to bring their own paddleboard or hire.

Among these attractions are handy foodie places too. There’s a tearoom if you’re craving an afternoon tea and cake, a restaurant powered by local produce and a village shop selling essential food fare. These pair well with the bar and clubhouse, which has sports screens and celebrity evenings, and a shopping village full of niche independent shops.

Along with a showground hosting weekly events like car or dog shows, a Sunday car boot fair and free bouncing pillows, these are all one to two minutes’ walk from the pitches. On the immediate site, however, the facilities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area, disabled facilities, wifi, a kids’ play area and spaces for kids to run around and let off steam. There's also a post office on site which provides cash back and other banking services.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Had to cancel so unfortunately nothing this visit. However we have stayed here before and although the faculties aren’t fantastic they are ok for our needs. The legends bar is good and we enjoy walking around the shops and fayre ground.

    Disliked:

We were called on the morning of our stay to say the pitches were water logged and we were being moved to the hard standing pitch on the show ground. So we were happy to still stay. When we arrived on the Friday this turned out to be the carpark on the show ground. This would have been ok on a normal weekend however there was a Christmas fayre on the Saturday and Sunday on the show ground. The area was already congested on the Friday and we felt our car and caravan would not be safe for us to leave and external point such as electric and water could be easily tempered with. We would have been on edge all weekend. So we asked for a full refund, which they agreed to and have had emailed confirmation. We had both taken the Friday afternoon of work, so we’re not very chuffed, we did find a lovely alternative at Polstead Country Park but had to pay again and travel the extra mileage.

We had booked to stay 4 nights on the camping site, but due to some heavy rain days before, we were contacted to advise the grass site was out of use.
The staff at the site arranged for us to stay on hard standing with ehu. Close to the showers and toilets. In fact the new pitch suited us very well.

The bar was good, nice to shelter in the bad weather, women's toilets, once actually working properly were mordernish.

    Disliked:

Someone called to explain we would be moved to a hard pitch as the field was flooded, has no issues with this.

Upon arrival someone then told us this was also flooded, they took us to another field, which we got stuck in and had to get pulled out. We ended up on a piece of road with our friends other caravan, blocking the golf course, looking out to an abandoned circus.

We also felt abandoned, the gentleman that was there on arrival could not tell us where the water was, the waste water removal etc, just left us to fend for ourselves.

Showers were freezing cold, had young children with us who could only wash on the last day as it took that long for them to fix them.

I understand that we didn't go in peak time, but they shouldn't allow people to visit if they don't want to staff the area, we paid just as much as someone in the summer, so found that very unfair.

Well featured park, almost Disneyland by Suffolk standards in fact! (see website, too much to list!)

Nice staff, didn’t use pitch due to flooding but optional hard standing was fine.

    Disliked:

No dislikes really, a few noisy (12pm) Vikings. (Yes..sigh…) visiting, it’s all fine really. Site was a bit pricey but facilities kinda justify it. Washrooms low rent, but clean

The pitches were large with a close water supply. We were the only caravan on the site. The showers and toilets were well maintained. There were wash up facilities available although only 2 sinks. The wardens were friendly and helpful. They supplied an extra length mains lead as all the pitch hookups were switched off due to minimum 10 caravans rule. There are a good range of shops including craft and antiques. There is a good cafe and we had 2 good meals there at reasonable prices. There are many other leisure facilities crazy golf and a rally ground with car shows etc. The site is within easy reach of the Suffolk coastal resorts and large shopping centres. The pitches were level.

    Disliked:

It was quite a long walk to the on site shops. The road was poor with many potholes.

On arrival we were greeted with a smile, we explained we were new to camping and were shown where everything was and we’re told if we have any problems or get stuck with the tent just go to the office and they would come and give us a hand. Toilet and shower blocks cleaned daily, they were never smelly or dirty. On site shop, cafe, bar, kids entertainment, tea shop and plenty of other small businesses offering various products. Pitch space was generous overall a very good experience, not disappointed and would go back again

We’ve been several times before, perfect for a quick getaway as it’s only a half hour drive from home. Lots to do, shops, cafe, crazy golf, car boot on Sundays. This particular weekend we had to cancel, I got covid, so we have got a weekend owed as we called direct and the staff were very accommodating and said call and we can come another time ❤️

Local attractions

With all the attractions on site, it might be a while till you look outwards in search of entertainment. However, when you do, the Suffolk coastline is splendidly within reach, as the site is on the A1120 tourist road. Thorpeness (50 minutes' drive), Aldeburgh (45 minutes) Southwold (50 minutes) deliver on walks, watersports and simple seaside amusements.

This is also an excellent place to channel your inner historian and deep dive into the past. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) is a Norman castle with a walk across the 10-metre-high walls. Sutton Hoo (half an hour) is just as spectacular, with two medieval cemeteries where a ship with Anglo-Saxon pieces was found.

Perhaps pretty walks and eating out in restored Victorian buildings next? Snape Maltings (40 minutes) on the river Alde is a splendid setting for strolls and cycles, whether around the riverside loop or joining the Suffolk Coast Cycle Route 41. Take in the scenery on a river boat or sip on something caffeinated in the many independent eating venues in the Victorian buildings.
