Plenty of space for kids to have fun
Open fields

  • Busy, well-equipped site surrounded by the open Suffolk countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Sutton Hoo; 45 minutes from the coast
  • Theatre, restaurant, mini golf, owl sanctuary and play area on site
Looking for a Suffolk spot with lots of open space? The dog-friendly Stonham Barns Holiday Park might hit the sweet spot. Well-placed for the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and coast, this place is equal parts relaxing and active. The latter is very much helped by the fact that the site is part of the Stonham Barns Golf Park site, which has a whole host of family-friendly (and quite frankly fabulous) attractions… There’s a pirate-themed miniature golf course, a sensory room and a funfair with rides and bumper cars, which should all prove a hit with pint-sized guests. No need to go hunting in the trees: the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on site has over 80 owls and daily flying displays featuring birds of prey. Catch a comedy or tribute act at the Aspal Theatre, sojourn at the fishing lakes or get creative at the pottery painting studio, all of which are on site. Among these attractions are handy foodie places too. There’s a tearoom if you’re craving an afternoon tea and cake, a restaurant powered by local produce and a village shop selling essential food fare. These pair well with the bar and clubhouse, which has sports screens and celebrity evenings, and a shopping village full of niche independent shops. Along with a showground hosting weekly events like car or dog shows and a Sunday car boot fair, these are all one to two minutes’ walk from the pitches. On the immediate site, however, the facilities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area, disabled facilities, wifi, a kids’ play area and spaces for kids to run around and let off steam. There's also a post office on site which provides cash back and other banking services.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lots to do as it's like a small village. There was a dog obedient show on whilst we stayed also a boot fair on the day we departed.
The legends bar had entertainment and served food which although you had to wait a while for it to arrive it's was delicious and hot

Disliked: Our arrival was rather chaotic. It was very busy and we where shown to our pitch which we actually shared with another motorhome couple. Even though we had paid for our own pitch. But we followed her instruction. We were not told were the elsan point, taps or grey waste disposals where located had to find them ourselves. We never actually found the grey waste point. I believe if they had the tents in one area, motorhomes and camper vans in another and caravans in another it would work much better. But we had tents pitched up next to motorhomes etc. Not enough toilets or showers to accommodate the amount of visitors staying on site. A dull sound of the generator for all the electric hook ups could be heard through out the night in other motorhome and there was actually tents set up between us and the generator so for them the should would have been much louder

Liked: Lovely site which had Fishing, fantastic mini golf (which i won), shops, Cafe and bar.
The Cafe food was great value .
The legends bar is reasonably priced and nice food, looks smart and clean and the staff were lovely and welcoming, though lack of seating for busy periods.
Car boot on the Sunday, which is a nice touch. Bingo night was very fun.
managed to get wifi in the caravan .
Showers and toilets clean.

Disliked: If you are 5ft tall the showers are OK but any taller you struggle! pressure was bad, sometimes stopped and ran cold. Radiators in shower areas, never on.
Caught two kids walking their dogs and left a number two beside our caravan, we offered a poo bag but they walked off (nothing to do with the site).
Only one elsan point at the other end of the site, when I asked were the water waste drop off was I was asked to lift my waste tank onto the elsan (silly way to dump waste water) but then dropped my waste tank cap down the drain (gone never got it back).
Fully serviced pitch would be great 👍

Liked: We really enjoyed the park they have at the campsite, our 5 and 3 year old really enjoyed it. They loved all the space on the field too!
Luckily it was a really quiet time to go, so they loved the space.

The staff are all so friendly and helpful, the toilets and facilities were all very clean too.

Small walk to shops, cafe, park, funfair, golf, which we all just loved, there was something for everybody!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: They have a wide array of things to do at the site itself, including a fun and engaging park for the children...
at the entrance there is a funfair, owl sanctuary and selection of unique shops, including a lovely cafe.
Fishing in the stream is allowed and obviously the golf (both crazy and normal) is great there to.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Easy enough to find although missed turning for the campsite once we were on the complex as the the anglers using the carp lakes park in front of the sign!
Once we were on the site we were met and told where we can pitch, although this was limited as not all the electric pitches were switched on.
The site seems to lack something, massive open area, but no shelter or hedges. The toilets were clean, but look unsightly from the outside as they are converted containers.
On site shops, bar and facilities all fine. Please note, bar does not do cash back however you can get money from the post officer which is in the toy shop.

From the manager: Hello, thank you for your view! Comments have been received and taken onboard. We are in the process of arranging a revamp of the toilet blocks so hopefully this will be complete when you next visit!

Liked: We had a lovely time at Stonham Barns. The Legends Sports Bar is a really nice venue to enjoy a drink or two and a few games of pool or darts. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the food we ate in the bar was lovely.

Local attractions

With all the attractions on site, it might be a while till you look outwards in search of entertainment. However, when you do, the Suffolk coastline is splendidly within reach, as the site is on the A1120 tourist road. Thorpeness (50 minutes' drive), Aldeburgh (45 minutes) Southwold (50 minutes) deliver on walks, watersports and simple seaside amusements. This is also an excellent place to channel your inner historian and deep dive into the past. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) is a Norman castle with a walk across the 10-metre-high walls. Sutton Hoo (half an hour) is just as spectacular, with two medieval cemeteries where a ship with Anglo-Saxon pieces was found. Perhaps pretty walks and eating out in restored Victorian buildings next? Snape Maltings (40 minutes) on the river Alde is a splendid setting for strolls and cycles, whether around the riverside loop or joining the Suffolk Coast Cycle Route 41. Take in the scenery on a river boat or sip on something caffeinated in the many independent eating venues in the Victorian buildings.
