  • Busy, well-equipped site surrounded by the open Suffolk countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Sutton Hoo; 45 minutes from the coast
  • Shop, restaurant, miniature golf, owl sanctuary and play area on site
Looking for a Suffolk spot with lots of open space? The dog-friendly Stonham Barns Holiday Park might hit the sweet spot. Well-placed for the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and coast, this place is equal parts relaxing and active. The latter is very much helped by the fact that the site is part of the Stonham Barns Golf Park site, which has a whole host of family-friendly (and quite frankly fabulous) attractions… There’s a pirate-themed miniature golf course, a sensory room and a funfair with rides and bumper cars, which should all prove a hit with pint-sized guests. No need to go hunting in the trees: the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on site has over 80 owls and daily flying displays featuring birds of prey. Catch a comedy or tribute act at the Aspal Theatre, sojourn at the fishing lakes or get creative at the pottery painting studio, all of which are on site. Among these attractions are handy foodie places too. There’s a tearoom if you’re craving an afternoon tea and cake, a restaurant powered by local produce and a village shop selling essential food fare. These pair well with the bar and clubhouse, which has sports screens and celebrity evenings, and a shopping village full of niche independent shops. Along with a showground hosting weekly events like car or dog shows and a Sunday car boot fair, these are all one to two minutes’ walk from the pitches. On the immediate site, however, the facilities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area, disabled facilities, wifi, a kids’ play area and spaces for kids to run around and let off steam. There's also a post office on site which provides cash back and other banking services.

What customers say

This campsite boasts golf, a funfair & shops. Staff are often praised as friendly. However, reviews frequently cite issues with toilet/shower cleanliness and outdated facilities, some with cold water. Spacious pitches & family-friendly vibe are positives, but ablutions are a common complaint.

Liked Field was fine had it to ourself after everyone left on the bank holiday Monday no new arrivals after that

Disliked Toilets were an absolute disgrace it was like we were at a festival floors not cleaned walls full of spiders also toilet empty thing was full all the time and you couldn’t empty your toilet. Couldn’t believe the state of the toilet and shower facilities place should have been closed down because of the health standard of them

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Always like going to Stonham Barns been going sometime now, friendly staff and plenty to do with the golf courses and fishing plus the owl sanctuary. Did miss the fun fair.

Disliked Though the toilet blocks had improved but still not up to standard. The disposable waste had over flowed and not use able. Also the rubbish bins were overflowing.

Liked Great family friendly place. Our first time camping and we couldn’t have chosen a better place. We have a 7 year old and a 13 month old and there was so much to do and so much is there for all ages. We booked fri-mon and didn’t manage to get everything done. Staff are so friendly and welcoming which makes a massive difference in a first time experience. Although we’ve not tried anywhere else camping, this is definitely somewhere we will be returning to.

Disliked The toilets and shower blocks aren’t great, however, I feel as though it’s not a fault from the cleaner. It’s more of a fault from visitors who are leaving them in awful conditions. Empty bottles left in the showers, toilets stuffed with toilet rolls, leaving water all on the floors, marks all on the walls etc. the cleaner is there a few times a day cleaning (even doing more than her allocated hours) making sure it’s clean and useable for visitors. The maintenance team had been made aware of issues with some toilets but nothing was being done at the time of our visit. I just want to point out how friendly the cleaner is, she even took time to speak to us and told us about different things we could do on site. She seems to go above and beyond and I think she should be recognised and made aware of how great she is.

Liked The location & friendliness of staff

Disliked Toilet & shower blocks were awful only 1 working and left in a disgusting condition.

We were put in front of a motor home and their door was right by our tent so every time they came in and out of their door they knocked our ropes & tent.
People were still up & shouting at 1am in the morning.

Liked Legends Sports Bar entertainment was good.
Prices were reasonable.
Staff in the bar were friendly and welcoming.

Disliked Cleanliness - there wasn’t any!! So dirty and outdated.
Toilets and shower blocks were disgustingly filthy with many being out of order only leaving one ladies toilet working but leaking, lack of soap, toilet paper, hand towels and cleaners!!
Outside bins overflowing as well as the Elsan Point for chemical waste disposal. Unusable before leaving.
No lighting from campsite to facilities as uneven, dangerous and smelt terrible.
Shops in the shopping village were very specialised and expensive, not for the average campers pocket or needs, and not for children except for the sweet shop.
Village store although quite roomy was poorly stocked with very rude staff.
Being a holiday park and campsite a camping shop would’ve been useful.
Hard standing pitches would be an advantage for a waterlogged field.

Liked Sight was ok, well spaced out easy enough to find and get to. Bar offering some entertainment on site and park areas for kids, shops etc on site

Disliked Condition of toilets wasn’t great, locks smashed off doors, no toilet roll in the cubicles that could lock, showers ok but dirty. Appreciate this is not all the fault of the site, selfish guests not treating things with respect play a big part but seemed to be little to no maintenance. Elson point was blocked on departure with just a sign saying maintenance aware.

Liked Large pitch sizes.
Water points close by.

Golf course is well kept and the adventure golf looks good (although we never played it as we had our dog with us)
Regular events on the showground.
Car boot

Disliked We found this site to be very run down and in need of some TLC.
Toliets - in one of the blocks there was only 1 toilet that was working in the ladies. toilet roll always empty, lock broken on most of the toilets, and not the cleanest.
Showers - not clean
Kids play area - in very poor condition, heras fence panels around part of it.

On our last day the eslan toilet disposals was full to the brim and unusable.

The village we found more shops closed than open, the funfair that is advertised is no longer there.

We found out after we booked that the company had gone into administration and had the site had been brought by a new company. Which is why I presume the site lacks the TLC and requires work to it.

This place has the ability to be a really good site if work is carried out and is maintained as it should be

Liked This is our second time at your campsite and yes we had a good time but since it’s changed hands it seems to be going under a lot of change which I hope is just the transition period not the start of everything to come, although the toilets and showers were cleaned daily, they were cleaned for what she could see once you stepped in and shut the door the dirt behind the door and dust/durt in air vents was then visible.

Disliked The fairground has gone, pottery painting has been forced to close, the playground is not really fit for use, ropes not where they should be for the climbing side and the train is not in use. The eye photography shop has the sign outside the shop but was never open and no open hours or contact info available either. Most of the locks on the toilet doors didn’t lock.

Local attractions

With all the attractions on site, it might be a while till you look outwards in search of entertainment. However, when you do, the Suffolk coastline is splendidly within reach, as the site is on the A1120 tourist road. Thorpeness (50 minutes' drive), Aldeburgh (45 minutes) Southwold (50 minutes) deliver on walks, watersports and simple seaside amusements. This is also an excellent place to channel your inner historian and deep dive into the past. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) is a Norman castle with a walk across the 10-metre-high walls. Sutton Hoo (half an hour) is just as spectacular, with two medieval cemeteries where a ship with Anglo-Saxon pieces was found. Perhaps pretty walks and eating out in restored Victorian buildings next? Snape Maltings (40 minutes) on the river Alde is a splendid setting for strolls and cycles, whether around the riverside loop or joining the Suffolk Coast Cycle Route 41. Take in the scenery on a river boat or sip on something caffeinated in the many independent eating venues in the Victorian buildings.
