Kings Forest Caravan Park: Kings Forest, stunning any time of the year

General

  • Quiet adults-only forest site with stables for bringing horses
  • A 20-minute drive from Bury St Edmunds and an hour from the coast
  • Next door to forest, West Stow Country Park and Anglo-Saxon village

Don’t leave the horse behind when you take a holiday: quarter your steed alongside your good self in the Suffolk countryside at King’s Forest Caravan Park.

A couple of minutes’ drive from the village of West Stow, this peaceful adults-only site is next to Kings Forest and West Stow Country Park, where trails for walkers, cyclists and horse riders wind through an ancient landscape of heath and lakes alongside the River Lark.

Part of a working farm, Kings Forest Caravan Park has smart stable facilities for visiting horses, and there’s coaching in dressage and equine behaviour if you and four-hoofed friend need a refresher course. The adjacent forest and the surrounding Suffolk countryside make cracking turf for hacking across too. They’re just as good for walking and pedalling, and with direct access to the forest, woodland wanderings and wildlife encounters are close to hand; look out for fallow deer, wild foxgloves and kestrels swooping overhead.

This is a prime position to relax in too: peace and quiet are highly prized out here, and the proprietors ask everyone to kindly keep it down after 10pm… the horses need their beauty sleep…

Lovely clean well maintained site all facilities open and spotlessly clean. Owners very welcoming and helpful as we are self contained we were on a non electric pitch which was in a good with area plenty of room We would return there again. My daughter has just bought a motorhome and will collect this in September. As she and her husband are new to this they want us to go to a site with them to show them the ropes We have decided to take them to Kings Forest and go on electric pitches as we think this would be an ideal venue to take them and we are looking forward to returning. We cant book yet as the date she collects the van is not certain as yet.

This was our first ever campsite in our new (to us) campervan and we felt so lucky to have found this site. Fantastic view of Thetford Forrest from the site, clean and modern facilities and waking up to the horses every morning was just the icing on the cake. Seeing the owner and her dog whizzing up and down on their golf buggy doing their rounds was also a brilliant site. We will be back for sure.

Local attractions

A walk away, West Stow Country Park is a top spot for Suffolk strolls and rides, with a pair of hides for birdwatching and whole platoons of wildlife gathering on the lake and along the River Lark. As an added bonus, there’s a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village where you can see how life was way back in the Dark Ages.

The ancient market town of Bury St Edmunds is 20 minutes’ drive away if you’re minded to continue the historical theme: medieval Moyse’s Hall is home to a fab museum, while Ickworth House, built in neoclassical style for the earls of Bristol, is like a little bit of Rome on the Fens. After that, head on to the half-timbered, brightly hued cottages of Lavenham or have a go at axe making at Grime’s Graves prehistoric flint mine; both are half an hour away.

There’s wildlife aplenty around here too, and trails to spot it at Cavenham Heath National Nature Reserve (15 minutes): blue tits and woodpeckers are often seen in the woods, while on the heath, lizards, adders and stone curlews flit around the remains of World War II defences.

More exotic residents can be met at Banham Zoo (40 minutes), from Bactrian camels to silvery marmosets and gelada baboons, and seals can sometimes be spotted from the cliffs and beach at Felixstowe, an hour away. Even without glimpses of its whiskered marine mammals, the seaside town makes a top day trip, with beach walks, harbour cruises and tours of 18th-century Landguard Fort finished off with fish and chips.
