Loddon Campsite and Marina: Lots of space

General

  • Quiet and friendly site on the banks of the river Chet in Loddon
  • On the edge of the Norfolk Broads, a half-hour drive from the coast
  • Boat moorings, slipway and river fishing on site

Loddon Campsite and Marina is a peaceful and friendly site in the Norfolk village of Loddon, on the banks of the river Chet and with all sorts of handy things (pubs, shops and an excellent chippy) within a short walk.

The riverside setting is key here: guests have access to the water with moorings, a slipway for boats and space for fishing (for carp, tench, roach and perch). You’ll need to keep a good hold of your catch though, as there’s a resident heron on site that probably wouldn’t mind sharing in the spoils…

This is a handy spot for getting out and about in the Norfolk countryside: you can take walks along the river just by the site or hire boats to cruise along to the Norfolk Broads. Alternatively, head west to Norwich or east to the coast with a drive of half an hour or less. Dogs are welcome to join you on trips here, but must be kept on a lead.

Toilets and showers are provided on site; alongside these facilities, all pitches have access to electric hookups.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

A nice quiet spot in a lovely village with nearby walks and a choice of places to eat and drink. We'd have liked to have walked along the pretty river but apparently there were lots of stinging nettles and we only had shorts with us. The site was quite basic but there were toilets and a shower in a brick-built block. We were only there one night and I didn't use the shower, although I saw someone returning from the area who clearly had. The toilets did run out of toilet paper - mental note: pack a roll for future emergencies. The pitches were not level but in a van that didn't bother us. We arrived just before 6pm which was when the reception was due to close. The owner lives on site so it wasn't a problem and his attitude was friendly and quite laid back.

    Disliked:

There was a pub backing onto the site, which happened to have live music on the night we stayed. Although the music was OK, it was quite intrusive and I imagine it could have annoyed those who didn't like the genre, or had small children with them. It was over before 10pm.

    Sloping site.
Difficult to access the hook ups as they were too far away from the pitches.
No signs for anything so difficult to find your way around.
Site surrounded by rubbish, old cars, and boats, it looked like a junk yard.
    Dirty washing facilities.
Photo on the front was not a picture of the site

Loddon is a lovely place! The marina is stunning, the campsite is a little walk along the road to the marina. Fish and chip shop/chinese/kebab shop right outside. Co-op is in walking distance. The campsite is cheap and laid back I took my 3 kids for their first camping experience, although there is nothing for them to do on the campsite we mainly used it as a base as we drove to Yarmouth during the day which is about a 30 min drive away. As a family of 5 holidays can get very expensive but this was a nice little mini get away that didn't cost us the earth. It's right behind the King's head pub and up the road from The Swan. The staff in reception are friendly. I would come back with my kids or with friends.

    Disliked:

The toilets could really really do with an upgrade. As one seat was broken and very dated. (I have been to many festivals and have experienced a lot worse toilets) Luckily we took our own loo roll as there wasn't any there. We didn't use the shower as we only stayed 1 night but that also needs updating. The campsite its self is not sign posted so you would easily drive past it. If you get to the King's head you need to turn up the gravel path beside it. Once you pull up there is no direction to where the reception is, we parked up where all the other campers where and asked where to go (you walk down the hill of the camp toward all the derelict cars and boats and there is a building behind the static caravan, that is where the toilets and reception is). Despite these negatives, for £15 a night for an electric pitch I would still come back!

Quiet despite being in town and near a pub, local walks, friendly owner/tenant, nice little town, modern public toilets and showers in public car park in the town. The camp site is a work in progress and the new tenant is beginning to improve the area. He already has some new signs to put up.

    Disliked:

Location in an under invested boat yard made the area seem derelict, poor/non existent signage, didn't use toilets or showers as didn't realise they had any. There is no WiFi in the field or O2 mobile signal anywhere in the town but there is free WiFi in pub next door.

    The Swan pub was good.
We were the only people there (see below for “residents” and to understand why no one else was there!)
There was no push back when we changed our booking from two nights to one night after we arrived and saw the site.

    Disliked:

Pictures on Pitchup.com do not represent the campsite. The one of the marina is not taken from the campsite. The two of the field were taken a few years ago and do not show the “Steptoes Boat Yard” between the field and the marina.
The office and toilet facilities are part of a working boatyard with abandoned cars, boats, machinery, containers and stuff everywhere. The facilities are therefore grubby and basic.
The nature of the area means it would not be safe for young children.
Pitches were on a fairly steep sloping field.
All electric hookups are based in the centre of the field and the installation looks precarious at best.
There are two permanent touring caravans on the field which have definitely seen better days and look very scruffy.
Once we arrived and realised the site was not as portrayed in the photos we decided to stay only one night. To their credit there was no push back.

No toilets nearest are a short walk on the main street and shut at 9pm.
    No plot markings slightly disorganised.
Zero phone signal (not the sites fault)
Hopefully as it's new they will soon sort these at least the water and signage.
