Old Buckenham Country Park: Camping pitch

General

  • Well-equipped family-friendly Norfolk site over 26 acres
  • A 35-minute drive from Norwich and 15 minutes from Snetterton Circuit
  • Fishing, obstacle course, fitness classes and licensed café

Grab rod and reel, prepare for some serious ‘you time’, and park up for a few days at Old Buckenham Country Park, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Norfolk village of Old Buckenham.

Starting stays with a thorough explore of the 26-acre site is a must. There are two lakes to watch wildlife by, bug hotels to fascinate inquisitive kids and grownups, and a mile-long obstacle course with a path alongside it for running. Explores all done, opt in to some of the fitness classes available on site.

Fishers should take special note of those lakes, claiming a patch of shore to set up for a day of peaceful catching. Fish aren’t the only animals to track down either: twitchers won’t be able to keep from craning their necks, with eyes peeled for chickens (on the ground, not in the sky), ducks, geese, kingfishers, swans and owls.

That’s a lot to fill days, so be sure to spend evenings having relaxed moments next to the firepits dotted around site. When food starts beckoning, there are barbecues to borrow (if one hasn’t been brought from home) and pub grub at one of the Old Buckenham locals. A licensed café is open on site from Thursday to Sunday for sweet treats and drinks too, which should help keep energy and spirits up as you relax on the deck overlooking the lake (a particularly fine view at sunset…)

Please note

The bar is open between 01/04 and 31/10.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

    Facilities

    Disliked:

Shower was very hot and high up so caused issues bathing the kids. There is also a serious wasp infestation, multiple people were stung while we were there and we had to set up our own wasp traps to lure them away from our camp site.

Great location. Staff member, Debbie, very helpful and friendly as was Adam. Liked facilities, shower block and cafe area.

    Disliked:

I think the shower block hasn't been fully completed, so not a dislike, but need mirrors, sockets and a shelf shower side.
The cafe/bar could be a little bigger as when busy, queues and wait times were a little frustrating. Could also do with a play area, park for the children. It hasn't been open long, so these things take time. Beyond their control, but ants were an issue, take ant powder.

I was really pleased with the site, lovely settings and very clean. Hot showers too which is always a winner with us. Pitch size was very generous, we didn’t feel at all over crowded. We saw a hot air balloon take off from site to which was a great watch. Kids also loved the assault corse which does need a little TLC, overall will definitely go again.

    Disliked:

All very minor points and didn’t bother us that much to not want to go again, toilets/showers even though clean had a awful sewage smell coming from them at times. The price to camp was good but the cost of drinks/food on site was a little over priced I thought esp when you have to drink a gin from a plastic cup. (However I get it being by a lake). Could do with a little park for younger children but being a new site this may come later.

Friendly staff and clean toilet block. Although they were a lot of campers it was a quiet and peaceful stay. The cafe was lovely and well sited next to the small lake where a few people were fishing. There were plenty of walks to do and if you were energetic there was an obstacle course to complete however we weren’t that way inclined. Overall it was a pleasant stay.

Local attractions

Anyone keen on craft booze may have found the ideal spot here. The site is 10 minutes’ drive from Elmtree Beers brewery and its on-site shop, and tours and tastings are to be had at English Whisky Co distillery, also 10 minutes away. If the vino is more appealing, it’s 35 minutes from base to Winbirri Vineyard for tours and tastings of reds, whites and sparkling wines.

Thirsts quenched, turn next to Snetterton Circuit (15 minutes) where – during well-timed stays – guests can join the crowds to watch the GT Cup final, Mini races, time attack trials and fireworks. Not able to travel for a race? Have a go on the circuit yourself, with track days and training days available for cars and motorbikes.

Those who prefer a slower pace to their holidays can skirt Snetterton and opt instead for leisurely days among exotic birds, ferocious beasties and peaceable pets at Banham Zoo (five minutes), or hanging about with the alpacas in the nearby town of Diss (15 minutes).

When some time away from rural bliss is required, a 35-minute drive will land guests in Norwich to explore castle and cathedral, stroll in stunning gardens, learn a bit about history at one of the many museums, or burn a hole in wallets with shopping at the Norwich Market or in high-street stores.

Must see

  • Banham Zoo (2.0 miles)
  • Bressingham Steam and Gardens (5.9 miles)
  • Colman's Mustard Shop and Museum (15.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds (21.2 miles)
  • Oxburgh Hall (21.6 miles)
