Sheltered pitches by the treeline

General

  • Fishing getaways and wellness retreats at spacious Norfolk site
  • A 35-minute drive from Norwich and 15 minutes from Snetterton Circuit
  • Fishing, obstacle course, fitness classes and licensed café

Grab rod and reel, prepare for some serious ‘you time’, and park up for a few days at Old Buckenham Country Park, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Norfolk village of Old Buckenham.

Starting stays with a thorough explore of the 35-acre site is a must. There are two lakes to stumble upon, bug hotels to fascinate inquisitive kids and grownups, and a mile-long obstacle course with a path alongside it for running. Explores all done, opt in to some of the fitness classes available on site.

Fishers should take special note of those lakes, claiming a patch of shore to set up for a day of peaceful catching. Fish aren’t the only animals to track down either: twitchers won’t be able to keep from craning their necks, with eyes peeled for chickens (on the ground, not in the sky), ducks, geese, kingfishers, swans and owls.

That’s a lot to fill days, so be sure to spend evenings having relaxed moments next to the firepits dotted around site. When food starts beckoning, there are barbecues to borrow (if one hasn’t been brought from home) and pub grub at one of the Old Buckenham locals. A licensed café is open on site from Thursday to Sunday for sweet treats and drinks too, which should help keep energy and spirits up.

Everything!!! Lovely quite location, beautiful setting. Please infinite previous reviews on the facilities as there is a brand new shower block.
Kids loved the animals and freedom to play around the area. New gazebo at the bar was amazing and even late October provided a warm feel for a few drinks on a Friday night.

    Our new favourite place!!!

I stayed here for 2 nights with my 12 year old son and our dog. The site has lots of open space for dog walking and playing football etc... It has a very relaxed atmosphere, which was lovely. The toilets and showers are very rustic, but clean and fully functional. The cafe is quirky and cosy and run by a lovely lady. It was great to have somewhere to go in the evening for a drink, when it was cold, wet and dark outside. We will definitely be returning in the spring/summer months.
This is functional, relaxed camping! If you’re looking for somewhere with spotless facilities and all the mod cons then maybe not for you.

    Disliked:

When booking the pitch, it was described as grass and gravel. Unfortunately, it was just very wet grass. We had no option but to drive on and got stuck straight away. Luckily we didn’t intend on leaving for a couple of days.

I was assured that someone would tow us out, but luckily, as we left, all of our very kind neighbours helped to push us out.

    Large pitch

    Disliked:

Booked grass/ gravel pitch but on arrival no gravel pitches anywhere on site .
Checked in with very nice lady in cafe as reception closed and given pitch number and no electric hook up . Went back to lady in cafe who rang a lady ,unsure who she was, unfortunately conversation on loud speaker so bit annoyed that she said " must be blind if she can't see them " .
Then had to manoeuvre car with caravan in tow back to pitch again, definitely no hook up so pitched on different site .
Could not find water source , back to cafe again, told that near by in barrel, beginning to think going mad , but definitely no barrel so filled water tank with drinking water as only water available .
Everything going ok until woken at 10 pm by a group of lads arriving in van and pitching tent with head torches, loud music and shouting.
Campsite does not appear to have any rules regarding groups and latest time to arrive .
I felt sorry for the Lady in the cafe as she did her best but did not appear to have much idea about facilities and person in charge had no customer service.
    Will not visit again.

    - one shower nearby and two (working part time)far away.
    - a shack with cold water and just one fixed tap for 3 sinks.
    - internet works occasionally
    - the coffee shop open just at the weekend.

What a great site! Lovely cool relaxed atmosphere and great for kids. The toilet and shower facilities are rustic and quirky but perfectly adequate, and clean. However, if you're after modern, shiny conveniences this is not the place for you. No pot washing facilities but we managed perfectly well in our van with a kettle and washing up bowl. The WiFi didn't seem to reach our pitch and 4G is pretty non-existent, but a great excuse to get away from the world and enjoy some screen-free time! Really dark at nightime so bring a torch, but fantastic for spotting the milky way!
The kids absolutely LOVED this place, they could roam free safely, climb trees, and meet the farm animals. We were also super impressed with the onsite bar/cafe and visiting street food vans (plus the delicious breakfast rolls!). Bressingham steam and gardens nearby are definitely worth a visit, very quaint. Can't wait to visit again!

Local attractions

Anyone keen on craft booze may have found the ideal spot here. The site is 10 minutes’ drive from Elmtree Beers brewery and its on-site shop, and tours and tastings are to be had at English Whisky Co distillery, also 10 minutes away. If the vino is more appealing, it’s 35 minutes from base to Winbirri Vineyard for tours and tastings of reds, whites and sparkling wines.

Thirsts quenched, turn next to Snetterton Circuit (15 minutes) where – during well-timed stays – guests can join the crowds to watch the GT Cup final, Mini races, time attack trials and fireworks. Not able to travel for a race? Have a go on the circuit yourself, with track days and training days available for cars and motorbikes.

Those who prefer a slower pace to their holidays can skirt Snetterton and opt instead for leisurely days among exotic birds, ferocious beasties and peaceable pets at Banham Zoo (five minutes), or hanging about with the alpacas in the nearby town of Diss (15 minutes).

When some time away from rural bliss is required, a 35-minute drive will land guests in Norwich to explore castle and cathedral, stroll in stunning gardens, learn a bit about history at one of the many museums, or burn a hole in wallets with shopping at the Norwich Market or in high-street stores.

Must see

  • Banham Zoo (3.2 kilometres)
  • Bressingham Steam and Gardens (9.5 kilometres)
  • Colman's Mustard Shop and Museum (24.4 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds (34.2 kilometres)
