Old Buckenham Country Park: Music in the Park (photo added by manager on 08/06/2018)

General

  • Well-equipped family-friendly Norfolk site over 26 acres
  • A 35-minute drive from Norwich and 15 minutes from Snetterton Circuit
  • Licensed café, large play area and lakes for fishing on site

Among 32 acres of scenic Norfolk countryside, Old Buckenham Country Park is excellent for some serious ‘you time’. The site is dedicated to enhancing its natural habitats; surrounding the lakes are numerous mature trees, hedgerows and flower-rich grasslands, with many footpaths leading around the park.

The kids are welcome to unleash their energy in the play area while adults catch up in the coffee shop. The café serves coffee but also has a licensed bar, which sells tasty light bites well into the twilight hours. The café decking overlooks the lake, so it has particularly splendid views at sunset. Be sure to unwind around your firepits in the evenings too.

Grab rod and reel, for anglers, too, are invited to reserve a spot for a day of family fishing or solitary reflection. The lake has an abundance of silver fish. Fish aren’t the only animals to track down either: keep your eyes peeled for chickens (on the ground, not in the sky), ducks, geese, kingfishers, swans and owls.

The site is less than five minutes’ drive from the Norfolk village of Old Buckenham.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The bar is open between 01/04 and 31/10.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

Very clean site and toilet/shower block. All staff were friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but an observation. There was a lack of lighting, so a trip to the toilet/shower block at night was a bit scary😂

Great little place to stay. Kids play area is great and plenty of space for kids to run free. Showers and toilets were so much better than expected, showers were a lovely temperature for the whole shower. Lovely cafe/bar open in to the evening so you can chill out by the lake. Staff seem lovely and very helpful. Would definitely stay again.

Our children loved the playground and the space to run around. The cafe had a good selection of food and drinks and the staff were all very friendly. My husband did a spot of fishing and the live music event was brilliant on the Sunday (before the heavens opened). The site is excellent value for money and we had a lovely long weekend. The facilities were good and the pitches were level. The size of our pitch was very generous

    Disliked:

Although the staff were very well mannered they were at times a little slow and avoided communication with customers when busy (such as walking past without making eye contact) Could improve if a little better communication and aplogising for any waits, letting customers know they will be with them shortly etc.

Good size pitches. Plenty of toilets & showers. A bit of a hidden gem. Great value for money.

    Disliked:

Shower & toilet facilities would benefit from being cleaned at least twice a day, once a day is not enough, by the end of the day the state of these is questionable. Likewise, the washing up area could do with a clean, not sure this was ever done.

Despite the poor weather this year my wife, two boys and I had a really lovely 8 nights camping at OBCP. Our pitch was plenty big enough to host our large family tent and car/trailer. The site is spacious with room for the older kids to play games, ride bikes and make friends, and the large new play tower was a plus for the younger ones. It was nice to sit and have a drink on the decking overlooking the fishing lake at the café/bar, especially around sunset. The washroom and toilet facilities were great. Staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our walks around and from the site, spotting the farm animals and all the other wildlife, and to the nearby villages for a pint. We had lovely food at The Gamekeeper in Old Buckingham. Will definitely be back!!

    Disliked:

Only very slight improvements to suggest would be to improve the pitch signage as some letters seemed to be missing or only on one end of a row. It took us a while to find our spot and we saw other campers that had pitched on the wrong side of their row and had to move after putting their tents up. Also to fill in some of the deeper holes on the roads in and out of site. But this is nit picking really and would not put us off returning at all.

Local attractions

Anyone keen on craft booze may have found the ideal spot here. The site is 10 minutes’ drive from Elmtree Beers brewery and its on-site shop, and tours and tastings are to be had at English Whisky Co distillery, also 10 minutes away. If the vino is more appealing, it’s 35 minutes from base to Winbirri Vineyard for tours and tastings of reds, whites and sparkling wines.

Thirsts quenched, turn next to Snetterton Circuit (15 minutes) where – during well-timed stays – guests can join the crowds to watch the GT Cup final, Mini races, time attack trials and fireworks. Not able to travel for a race? Have a go on the circuit yourself, with track days and training days available for cars and motorbikes.

Those who prefer a slower pace to their holidays can skirt Snetterton and opt instead for leisurely days among exotic birds, ferocious beasties and peaceable pets at Banham Zoo (five minutes), or hanging about with the alpacas in the nearby town of Diss (15 minutes).

When some time away from rural bliss is required, a 35-minute drive will land guests in Norwich to explore castle and cathedral, stroll in stunning gardens, learn a bit about history at one of the many museums, or burn a hole in wallets with shopping at the Norwich Market or in high-street stores.

Must see

  • Banham Zoo (3.2 kilometers)
  • Bressingham Steam and Gardens (9.5 kilometers)
  • Colman's Mustard Shop and Museum (24.4 kilometers)
